If only they added ps2 compatibility I would get one, it's the only thing that would make the purchase worthy for me.

While I'm attracted by the Slim's price, I'm not attracted to it's looks. That has to be the most boring looking piece of electronics I've ever seen!

What?
You made a mistake. PS3 Slim still having an ethernet port, look at the images of any unboxing and you'll see, like on this pic http://www.engadget.com/photos/playstation-3-slim-unboxing-and-hands-on/2216917/

The chart is saying that an ethernet CABLE isn't in the box, not that the system doesn't have an ethernet port.

The newer 80 and 160GB models did not come with an ethernet cable.

Also, they weighed 9.5lbs (4.3kg) as opposed to the older BC 80GB which weighed 11.lbs (5.2kg)

Does this new model let you change the HDD by urself like the regular model? I'm guessing that the HDD panel is where the DD and DTS logos are?

YES. Good guess. At least you thought a little before posting a question answered many times already.

@JC Fletcher: There wasn't a (fully) software-based PS2 B.C. on the PS3, ever! The PS3 models that you list with "Software" PS2 emulation really still had the "Grapthics Synthetiser" (PS2 GPU) chip inside. Only the "Emotion Engine" (PS2 CPU) was emulated here, by the Cell. So it's only partially a software emulation. Newer models lacks the GS chip, too, hence no PS2 B.C. at all, because this chip is much harder to emulate in software.

I was going to buy a PS3 Slim, but Sony decided not to include backwards compatibility. Then again, I was also going to buy a PS3, but Sony took out backwards compatibility. Me and many people I know (over hundreds), will not buy a PS3 until Sony decides to stick some form of software-emulated backwards compatibility support in the PS3 Slim. We don't mind if it requires a new model, or just an OS update that adds a PS2 emulator (like how the Xbox 360 works). Until then, I'll just play my Xbox 360 and Wii, but Sony, once you decide to bring back backwards compatibility (and make it available to the 120GB PS3 Slim), then you will get my and many other people's money.

If Sony wanted to do it, they could emulate the GS chip without too much effort. The graphics chip in the PS3 (RSX) is made by NVIDIA and is based off of the NVIDIA GeForce 7800 graphics chip. People outside of Sony have already developed software which is able to emulate the GS on a NVIDIA GeForce 7800 graphics card with usable framerates (and this is by reverse engineering the PS2, Sony would have a big advantange in that they already know everything about the GS and RSX and would be able to emulate the GS on the RSX much more efficiently than the third-party people can emulate the GS on the NVIDIA GeForce 7800). If Sony took the time and made a fully-software backwards compatibility emulator for the PS3, I think the benefit is that it would greatly increase sales of these newer models (2008 PS3 models and the new PS3 Slim). By making GS support done by software emulation, it would require Sony to do some "hacks" to make certain games to work, but I think the library of great PS2 games being added to the game library for a user's PS3 would be greatly worth it. On the other hand, it would allow Sony to provide enhanced graphics to PS2 games (anti-aliasing, multisampling, etc.).

Jonathan: I don't think this is the case. The best PS2 emulator to date is PCSX2, but it's slow even on a new high-end PC!

Do you really think Sony is not aware of the benefits of the PS2 B.C. on the PS3? They are surely aware of it. But they could only emulate the EE PS2 chip in software on the first EU PS3's, and not the GS chip, so they had to include it in those machines.
