Gran Turismo 5's cars caught getting crunched on video

The Subaru Impreza that's zipping around the track in a GamesCom video captured by Gamersyde has certainly seen better days, but its suffering is our reward: we actually get to witness the yes-it's-finally-happening real-time car damage taking place in Gran Turismo 5.
Sure, it still might not look quite right (there's something about the cars seeming really lightweight) but it's a good start. Of course, there will always be those who won't be satisfied until "The Real Driving Simulator" lives up to its name and features drivers being thrown from their cars during crashes.
Head over to Gamersyde to view the video.
[Thanks, Colin!]

I race with no doors and no seatbelt on.
It adds to the excitement.

No hands.

I don't even sit inside the car when I drive.

Nice, can't wait for this game. Always been a fan of the GT series, even my dad loves it, lol.
David @ Aug 19th 2009 10:29PM
did you see it'll support head tracking with the PSeye?
the info comes from this website: http://www.gtplanet.net/gran-turismo-5-game-features-announced/
"Able to track the movement of Cockpit Camera interface (confirmed in full 3-D. The camera can be fully manipulated and you can opt to have your head tracked by the PSEye)"
If this is true, and it works, I'll finally buy that Logitech GT racing wheel.
other highlits
1,000 cars (170 with fully modeled 3d interiors)

Is the damage merely cosmetic or does it affect the driving like it suppose to in a real racing sim game like Forza?
DeepFriedSushi @ Aug 19th 2009 9:17PM
ya the modeling is superficial. when that other white car slammed into the impreza that car was undamaged. this is merely a tech demo and probably will change when the game comes out. shadow maps seemed buggy as well.
johnnynumber5 @ Aug 19th 2009 9:20PM
Did you watch the video or look at the accompanying photo?
Why even ask such a question when the answer is right in front of your face?
tmacairjordan87 @ Aug 19th 2009 7:28PM
Wow that actually looked really damn good, which I guess isn't a surprise since everything Polyphony does ends up looking really damn good.
SpaceFox @ Aug 19th 2009 7:45PM
But at what cost? But at what cost!?!? WE LOST THE PORSCHE MAN. WE LOST IT!
Sly [Planeteer | Power of Teets & Crumpets] @ Aug 19th 2009 8:00PM
but we gained lamborghini. all things considered, i would rather have lambo.
hatmantc @ Aug 19th 2009 8:12PM
@spacefox
GT has never had Porsche, they have had RUF but not Porsche.
Ruf Automobile GmbH is a German automobile manufacturer. Rufs are built from unmarked Porsche bodies and chassis. When a chassis arrives, Ruf builds their own independent work into the car. Because Ruf installs many of their own-made parts, the company is recognized as a manufacturer by the German government.
just an FYI
gm914 @ Aug 19th 2009 8:16PM
I'd rather Porsche in a second. Forgetting about RUF and the newer models for a sec, think about the racing history we now dont have- 904, 906, 908, 911S, 911Carrera2.7RS, 914/6GT, 917, 930, 935, 959Rothmans. 962. I could go on... for a Muira, Countach, Jalpa and Diablo. We just lost big... :(
Sly [Planeteer | Power of Teets & Crumpets] @ Aug 19th 2009 8:26PM
countach, diablo, gallardo, murcielago. i would rather have those 4 lambos than any of the cars you listed (in the game at least).

Take your time and do it right. I can wait as long as it takes if it means the greatest simulation racing game in the history of gaming.
ToadStoolPorridge @ Aug 19th 2009 9:56PM
I don't mind not having Porsche in the game. One of my dream cars is a Porsche 911 GT3, but Lambos just have that super exotic car feeling you want in a game. I would love to have Porsche's in the game, but it's not like there's going to be a shortage of them. This game is going to be fantastic, even if there are a few cars missing.
denis_ledent @ Aug 19th 2009 7:30PM
Not really impressive at this point. That's similar to the damages we can find in most racing games. I mean, the headlight doesn't even break after an impact. Man, this kind of features is achieved since many years now. What's going on ?
Hope this will get MUCH better in the upcoming months. Especially because i'm thinking about buying a slim soon :)
XGM @ Aug 19th 2009 7:38PM
Well they just announced damage (officially), and the game is looking like itll be late 2010. So safe to assume this will be improved over time.
fwacce @ Aug 19th 2009 8:10PM
Let's say a hundred years ago you had a piece of bread with grape jelly on it. You also had a piece of bread with peanut butter on it. Now, each of these were enjoyable just as they were. But then you put them together and got the holy grail of PB&J.
When arcade smash burnout type racing games drive like GT with as many cars, then your argument would mean something. Otherwise, all you really have is a piece of bread with jelly on it.
Paul @ Aug 19th 2009 9:01PM
fwacce, that was beautiful.
Wonderflex @ Aug 19th 2009 7:30PM
A) I think I just piddled a little.
B) Does everything look nicer than in GT5:Prologue?
Sly [Planeteer | Power of Teets & Crumpets] @ Aug 19th 2009 7:32PM
i've got one question: do cars light on fire too? cause that would be AWESOME.
gm914 @ Aug 19th 2009 7:36PM
No fire or even smoke unfortunately.
gm914 @ Aug 19th 2009 7:33PM
Yes but if we take off the rose-colored glasses for a sec we see the damage is half-assed. Not all cars will have it, the ones that do dont have scratches, dented panels (only perfectly formed panels that fall off) broken headlights/taillights, smashed windscreens etc. The cars STILL seem to bounce off walls, no rubber on the track, not all cars will have cockpit view and to top it off, Kaz just admitted NO PORSCHE!! C'mon joystiq, catch up a little...(we're still pals though, right?)
SpaceFox @ Aug 19th 2009 7:44PM
Sadly, I looked it up and you're right.
NOOOO, no Porsche in GT5.... Dx
Sly [Planeteer | Power of Teets & Crumpets] @ Aug 19th 2009 7:57PM
actually, you've got some of your info wrong. all cars will have damage, but only a select few will have interior damage along with exterior damage. and the damage DOES have scratches and dents.
but yeah, you're right, not having smoke or fire does kind of make the damage seem less important.
gm914 @ Aug 19th 2009 8:03PM
Where did you see this Sly? Why can't we see any evidence of this in the vids? The EVO still has its headlights ferrchrissakes? For the amount of colliding in that vid, every piece of that Subaru should be crumpled. Instead the hood is popped up and its doorless. Not realistic is it?
Sly [Planeteer | Power of Teets & Crumpets] @ Aug 19th 2009 8:14PM
i said SOME of your info was wrong. i didn't say anything about the headlights.
http://www.gtplanet.net/first-gran-turismo-5-damage-screenshot/
look at that. chipped paint, scratches, & dents. and the headlights seem undamaged, like you said.
Sly [Planeteer | Power of Teets & Crumpets] @ Aug 19th 2009 8:15PM
oh, and here's the stats, if i remember them right.
1000 cars total. 830 with exterior damage and cockpit views, but no interior damage. 170 cars with exterior damage, interior damage, and cockpit views.
my source being that article about GT5 damage posted yesterday.
fwacce @ Aug 19th 2009 8:17PM
Are we watching the same video? I see both bumpers barely hanging on, not just the hood and doors open/missing. I do agree it should look more 'crumpled', which I think it will be when they get it done, but I don't think it's fair to say that it only has a couple things damaged on it.
hatmantc @ Aug 19th 2009 8:24PM
since when was Porsche ever in a GT game?
gm914 @ Aug 19th 2009 9:03PM
Sly- gtplanet confirms NOT ALL CARS will have damage, only selecr sets. Read.... http://www.gtplanet.net/tag/damage/
NOT ME @ Aug 20th 2009 3:19AM
Well All these GT bitches can have GT5 because if you cant do simple shit like change your cars color. No deals....cause every thing else can be done elsewhere...and no I hate nascar not interested. and yes the simple fact is that all Gts starting from ps1 days can be one by bouncing off either cars or walls...try that shit in forza you will end backwards and smashed up....Forza on paper isnt better but the things that REALLY matter they get right. even the rims you buy in gt have been the same crap since they started adding it. But hey there always oil changes and car washes thats much better than customizing a car. And since its such a sim explain added a 3-5k exhaust and you look down there and its the oem exhaust still there. lol they couldve at least changed the pipe size to reflect the upgrade.
jaaaaaaaaaaames @ Aug 19th 2009 7:33PM
so last gen it wud be better on 360 with 800 discs
Longhorn Slim @ Aug 19th 2009 7:44PM
I dont understand are you bashing the PS3 or 360
I fried my comprehension in the last post
Sly [Planeteer | Power of Teets & Crumpets] @ Aug 19th 2009 7:59PM
i couldn't really tell either, but i still downvoted him for saying "wud". really? can't you type 2 more letters?
Spartan [Planeteer : Power of bad weather] @ Aug 19th 2009 7:35PM
Old Imprezza > new Imprezza
Jesus (PSN: Luttdawg) @ Aug 19th 2009 8:02PM
I use to think that way but I've come around.
Carl @ Aug 19th 2009 7:38PM
I like the damage the EVO took after ramming the Subaru from behind. *shakes head*
I'm glad they finished the damage modeling for at least one car. I look forward to this game in 2011 at that rate.
johnnynumber5 @ Aug 19th 2009 9:17PM
Supposedly it's physics based damage not animation based.
Jabra the Hutt @ Aug 19th 2009 7:42PM
I didn't see Clint Eastwood in any of that footage.
stray_dog_strut @ Aug 19th 2009 7:46PM
Are you an idiot, dyslexic, or a retard?
Sure, the first 8 letters of the game and movie are the same, but you have to be one of the aforementioned three to not be able to differentiate the two.
I'm also sure that your comment was just for laughs, but seriously, that shit is getting fucking old.
rabbler78 @ Aug 19th 2009 7:44PM
after reading most of these comments, it just fortified my belief that no matter what game for what system there will always be plenty of haters
You FAILED @ Aug 19th 2009 7:45PM
Whoa. That actually looks pretty damn bad. First off.. Colin Mcrae damage looks better. Second... what's with the physics? Cars are bouncing off walls and each other like there is no weight at all? Sorry. Forza 3 still looks better! Turn 10 actually knows how to make a racer for this gen. This looks like GT1 physics with damage. Pass!!!
Longhorn Slim @ Aug 19th 2009 7:46PM
You FAILED
guess what YOU FAILED
You FAILED @ Aug 19th 2009 7:52PM
