Ironically, this is a good thing in the long...long long run. Since Rage's engine is designed to upscale based of the amount of available system resources, the neat part about it was that graphic artists aren't limited by pixel counts anymore.

Supposibly, instead of being set with 'make a bad guy but only use 250kb of memory' they can now make the bad guy really ultra detailed with say 5mb of memory and the rage engine on-the-fly downscales it to 250kb if that's all the system can handle. The plus side is that when a new pc video card comes out that can handle say 375kb instead of 250kb, the game's graphics will actually improve.

Similarly, if by putting this game on two dvds, they can include the more detailed texture the artists made, Rage will actually improve/look better if its made backwards compatibile to run/work with the xbox 720, 960, etc etc. So in the long, long long run, this is a good thing as over the year when new hardware iterations come out, Rage will look better were as most games just look old when new hardware iterations come out. IE Looking at a Ps1 game versus Ps2.

Didn't Bungie already do this with Halo 3: ODST?

Halo 3 ODST runs on an unpdated engine while the multiplayer wil lstill be the same old Halo 3 engine, thus why it has 2 discs.

I don't think it was an issue with the games having different versions of the same engine. Otherwise, The Orange Box would have been on multiple discs.

Shingo, the Source engine was designed from the ground up to allow modifications and updates without requiring a repack onto a new disk.

Valve designed their system specifically to allow wonderful things like The Orange Box to exist.

Bungie has not done the same, it is an engine thing.

Guys, it doesn't matter if your game uses a different engine for different parts of the game or not. That doesn't have anything to do with multiple discs.

ODST has 2 discs because of multiplayer, the second disk has the halo 3 muyltiplayer with halo 3 (multiplayer) achievements, so the 'last game played' icon will be the halo3 icon. ODST is a different game entirely so it has ODST achievements and the ODST 'last game played' icon.

So it's safe to assume the same will apply for the PC version then.

I'm guessing that the PC may not adopt Blu-Ray or any higher capacity media for games for a long time. One reason being digital distribution and its especially popular on the PC and very few people could stomach downloading a game over 6gb, with their slow connections and also the assholic ISP's putting bandwidth caps, even as digital distribution and video streaming become more prevalent.

PCs shouldn't need disc swapping, as all the data can be installed on the hard drive.

The PC version will ship on multiple DVDs, but since it installs onto the hard drive there'll be no need to swap discs.

Yeah, this happens a lot on big games. Star Wars: Battlegrounds originally shipped with 2 discs, and you just installed both to your hard drive and played with one in the tray. Works pretty well, but makes it a little easier to pirate.

No. But you may have to worry about only getting half the frames per second that the 360 version would get you. That's old news, too.

When they said the game was clocking at 30 fps on PS3, they said they didn't know why. According to Gamestop the game will ship in January of 2011 (lol), so they have PLENTY of time to buff that stuff out, if they really want to.

sigh.. this is pathetic... first off, I for one have no qualms with getting off my couch FOR 30 SECONDS to switch a disk thats ten feet away... so that I can play for however many hours.
secondly, You just look like an idiot for taking shots at any particular consoles shortcomings when THEY ALL HAVE THEIR ISSUES! its undeniable so why don't you just shut up. Find a hobby or something.

There's no such thing on a 3 min DVD installation to HDD fanboy. Runs smooth and as quiet as a mouse. Your scratching disc argument isn't even 2009 news. Should I say "Maybe you should go back to watching movies while you're waiting on games?" Come on dude!

But I have a problem with getting up, waiting 2 minutes for the game to get to menu and another 30 seconds to get to the game itself. So not cool for disk swapping.
I'll buy the Ps3 version for this one.
I hope my point gets out there.

I bought a PS3 recently, and honestly they both have drawbacks. 360 disc spinning & fan is a little louder, but the PS3 handles updates & installs horribly. Metal Gear alone had me waiting like 45 mins total w/installs (between levels even) the Konami bull for Metal Gear Online, their update etc. etc.. Lack of gamerscore alone irks me everytime I rent a game, although I'll admit this Rage 2 disc action did kind of push me into a purchase, that and curiosity.

"That's fail"

Please tell me that's a typo. It's really embarrassing to see CEOs of game companies or PR heads to talk like that.

On topic, I don't care for multiple discs for single player. It seems like a huge hassle though to pop another disc in every time someone wants to play multiplayer though, when we're so used to just backing to the main menu and starting from there.

put the multiplayer on a 'bonus disc'..

It's very rare I even delve into competitive MP.. I like my 1000pts where I can get them, moreso now with a page on my dash that tells me how many games I've the full score

Nobody ever complained about having to swap discs before... Why is it suddenly a huge deal in this generation?

I DON'T GET IT.
