Shortly after the PS3 Slim was announced at GamesCom, Sony arrived at our doorstep ... with a PS3 Slim. (It was one of the most surreal incidents we can recall from our years of writing about games.)
Even though it won't hit retail shelves in the US until the first week of September, we've had the uncommon opportunity to open the box and offer our first impressions of the svelte console on the day of its announcement. We've documented the unboxing in the photo gallery below, along with a variety of pictures showing the PS3 Slim compared to other consoles, so you can get a better idea of its size (or, compared to the original PS3, its lack thereof).
Our initial impressions: It's definitely smaller, but not shockingly so. (Want shocking? Check out the PS2 "slim" on top of it.) It's still a hefty system that feels well made, and even though it lacks the gloss black and chrome finish of the original PS3, it's a lot nicer looking in person that the initial photos might have led you to believe. There's still a bit of pizazz in the form of a thin piece of glossy translucent plastic covering the eject / power button "panel" that looks extra classy.
Overall, it's about as pared down as we can imagine the platform getting feature-wise; we're curious to see if Sony introduces yet another, considerably smaller redesign a couple of years down the road. Oh, and maybe it will actually come with an HDMI or some component cables ... and not the Slim's composite A/V leads. Seriously, Sony? Seriously?
We'll have our video of the unboxing up soon. In the meantime, let us know in comments if there's anything particular you'd like us to go into more detail on; we'll be compiling the answers to your questions about the hardware for an upcoming post.

Hey Joystiq guys? Can you point out how well the power/ eject buttons work? Are they better than the phat PS3's?

People were having problems with eject and power? Just use your controller...
and..
I've never had a problem with this.. I just would tap the symbol and it would do its thing.

Much like I was glad I was an early adopter with the original PS1......so shall it be with the PS3.
This new version while svelte....is NOT what the PS3 was announced initially to be....in many ways it further represents the problems of SONY in that they are focused on the hardware and the bottom line than the actual GAMES.
Granted the PS3 Slim is smaller...but its not the order of change that the PS2 Slim was....its relatively the same size as an XBOX 360....and 1/2 the capabilities of the original. (No Memory Stick / SD / Card Reader, No PS2 BC, Only 2 USB Slots, No Linux Installation). Why would they NOT include an HDMI cable with a Blu-Ray / HD Capable system?? Are they hurting that much for the 1$ it would cost them in bulk??
They should offer the full - featured original PS3 as an option with an HDMI Cable.
You have to wonder how much the value of the original 60GB PS3s will increase as they further decrease the capabilities of the PS3 to being roughly equivalent to that of a blu-ray player.......which I may pickup the PS3 Slim for.

No one bought the original one because the cost of manufacturing was so high. Even at that $600 price tag they still lost money on each one they sold.
I don't know what you are talking about in terms of games ... They are focusing completely on game right now. They have put their first and second party studios to work on PSP, PS3 & PSN games like no ones business.
They reduced the size to reduce manufacturing costs so they could reduce the price for consumers. Obviously it's more about price than anything else or the original 20 & 60 GB units would still be around. But, they sold poorly and the 360 arcade unit @199 proves features aren't as important a factor as price.
GO buy a $10 USb card reader attachment. Done.

I have 2 launch PS3s...i don't need to buy a USB hub.
The point is......Unlike the PS1 and PS2....Sony has extracted actual features from the PS3 in its evolution....the PS1 and PS2 improved with age.....the PS3 is the opposite. For lack of a better term.....the newer PS3s are gimped.
If you think SONY is changing the model to benefit consumers...you are sorely mistaken. This is 100% a cost cutting move for them......rather than a benefit to save users money. Sure they dropped the price....but its not the same machine you are buying.

I'm not sure how good the PS3's Wifi really is. I took my PS3 to my folk's house this past summer and going through their Wifi sucked huge hairy ones. Constantly kicked out of the store, never could stay connected, took forever to load anything online.
So I borrowed my sister's old laptop, connected the PS3 to the laptop via an Ethernet cable and bridged the laptop's Wifi and Ethernet connections. No problems at all. Downloads from the store happened as quickly as if I was at home (which I haven't noticed a difference in wired and Wifi at home).
Now it may have been something to do with the settings on their router, but hard wiring it up to a laptop that used the same Wifi improved the online performance 1000%. I went from feeling like I was missing my legs and arms and had to use my chin to move down the sidewalk to hopping in a car and driving down the street, that's how much the performance increased.

I game exclusively through Wi-Fi on the PS3 and I've never had any issues what so ever. It's probably because the console itself wasn't setup properly to work with the Wi-Fi. Either that or the Wi Fi router itself sucked. I have a diesel wi-fi router.

Yeah, the power cord looks like it's internal AC adapter.
My bad.
But I still prefer the standard PC power cord.

Nice that they added a fillet to that internal corner where the blu-ray discs are inserted in...it's very difficult to wipe out the dust from that area on the original design.

It will take getting used to, I still think my phat looks better. The slim is just, ugly.

There is an HDMI cable in the PS3 Slim box. Other unboxing videos have even showed it. It's also printed on the box as included... look at the photos of the box!
