Despite our best intentions, we at Joystiq have been pretty lax about sinking the hours we thought we would into the browser-based Quake Live. But perhaps we'll be more dilligent about it now that the whole gang can get involved. Via the game's forums, id announced Tuesday that support had been added to the game for Linux and Mac users
Currently, Mac players are limited to playing through Safari, though id says that the Firefox/Mac combo will soon be a workable configuration.

Check your settings in the Audio MIDI Setup. The problem you mention appears to happen when it's set to anything else but 44,100 kHz.

I don't want to use Linux so bad that I'm willing to reboot every time I want to play my games.
Also I've thought about the hat thing before, but I decided against it because of the blue soldier and the red hat. :/

It's horribly buggy on Macs at the moment (crashes, the sound problem mentioned above, the right mouse button does not work...) but the "Beta" tag is there for a reason. I'm having a blast.
