Square Enix's decision to simultaneously launch Final Fantasy XIII on both PS3 and Xbox 360 certainly caused a lot of fan fervor. With each DVD holding far less data than a Blu-ray disc, PlayStation fanboys soon came up with mock-ups of the 360 version of the game, some with as many as 40 discs! Xbox 360 users won't have to worry, though, as reality is shaping up quite differently.
Speaking at GamesCom, Square Enix's Yoshinori Kitase commented: "This isn't the final count yet, but we're aiming for about three discs." The team is working to compress as much as possible, while still keeping the quality high. Interestingly enough, at three discs, Final Fantasy XIII won't take the crown for the 360 game with the highest disc count. Instead, Microsoft's exclusive Lost Odyssey manages to stay on top with its four.
Releasing a multi-disc Final Fantasy game isn't new for Square Enix. In fact, the company launched Final Fantasy VII on three discs back in the PS1 era. In spite of the burden of having to change discs, we heard that game turned out pretty alright.

I actually miss disc swapping. I have now idea why. Probably Nostalgia.

They are incentivized as much as anyone else to reduce the number of discs, licensing fees get a little out of hand once you hit 3, and more would only be more damaging to Square Enix, sort of negating the profit-increasing point of releasing it on 360 in the first place.

Ummm....licensing costs have nothing to do with how many discs the product has. This isn't the old Nintendo days when you had to pay the console company to produce your game for you.

The 360 version has already impacted the PS3 version. Kotaku released some photo comparisons of a pre-360 announcement picture and post 360 and the picture quality definitely went down. There were a lot more brown, HDR changed to Bloom, colors got thrown off, I seriously hope the PS3 version goes back to what it was originally. ALso, LOL at the 40 DVDs I was laughing my ass off on that, they also did the same thing on MGS4.

Oh, let me add that they took out the Japanese audio track because the version had to be the same for both. Originally both languages were supposed to be included but the 360 can't hold both audio tracks so there went the Japanese dub.

Kotaku didn't realize the fact that that comparison was from trolls on /v/ trying to start flame wars.
One of them was CGI, one was real time. Of course the game's gonna look worse.

Yes, because brown, hex 666663 takes up WAY more space than purple, CC33FF.
Colors all have the same size, dumbass. Being "brown" isn't a function of BluRay vs DVD.

No, Japanese audio was never intended to be included in the US version. When Squenix announced that FF13 is also going for the 360, they already said both version (PS3 and 360) in the US will be the same. Squenix NEVER included Japanese audio anyway on US versions of their games (except The Last Remnant for the PC).

And I guess after removing all the useless cinematics, SE is so famous for, it could fit a floppy.

I will take Quality over Quantity , no matter how many times i haft to get up from the couch to switch disc. so go a head use as many disc as needed ,as long that the quality of the game is at 100% i'll live. plus i need the exercise .

So then the PS3 one is the one to get, as Square confirmed it doesn't need all the compression the 360 version does they can just fill the 50 gig Blu-ray and no disk swapping either. For PS3, Quality and Quantity wins for FF-XIII, and FF-XIII Versus (the sequel) too I'm sure.

Am I the only person getting the PS3 version who actually wishes you could swap disks?
For some reason I always loved games like that because it felt like I got my money's worth of content out of them.

If any gamer lookin to buy this game has both an Xbox 360 and a PlayStation 3, you should've been lookin at the PlayStation 3 version all along. Square not to long ago mentioned that they were pushin for 95% of the PlayStation 3's power for Final Fantasy XIII. Of course we all know they were lying and trying to act big and bad and when the game is released, the truth will come out and the next game they'll say the same thing.
My point is, if Square by some miracle were tellin the truth, then the Xbox 360 version spanned over three disc's, is going to mean mass compression. That's 27GB vs about 45% more storeage capacity on the PlayStation 3's Blu-ray disc. Maybe only 35% more seeing as how Kojima has really been the only developer to have had to actually cut parts of the game (or japanese dubbing) for that matter because he'd used all 50GB. I really believe the Xbox 360 version of this game is going to be immensely compressed and the PlayStation 3 version of Final Fantasy XIII is really going to shine. The games functionality will also be vastly improved, if the rumour of IBM's newer and smaller chips in the PlayStation 3 can indeed improve upon the speed of the PlayStation 3. 45-nm chips mentioned on IGN.com

Personally I was always getting this for PS3 anyway (if for nothing more then the sake of familarity) Thing is hopefully they wont compress the crap out of the game so that it fits, at the sake of texture or resolution (Star Ocean's 540p anyone?) as I am sure MS like any other company charges extra to manufacture a multi disc game.
Also is it just me or is MS's completely crap way of packaging multi disc game enough of a reason not to buy a game? Due to MS's "discs on a stick" 3 DVD case design I had to swap Blue Dragon at the store 3 times before I found one that did not have any scratches on the discs, and Lost Odyssey's "gee lets save 40 cents and not make a bigger case, lets just put the 4th disc in a paper sleeve like we do with Windows" policy really pissed me off.
Also everyone really needs to stop comparing the PSX & N64 era to this one, as way back in 97 (some of the less intelligent posters on here were probably drooling on them selves or barely a fart in their Daddies undies) gamers were glad to be rid of cartridges and the thought of Multi disc game was "amazing" because no one could fathom filling a CD-ROM, now some 12 years later it's seen as antiquated to have multiple discs since other better options are out there.

I actually like changing the discs. Makes me feel like I'm doing progress, and
I would take FF13 on 4 DVD's -- that way they don't compress the graphics/audio to much.
Either way, I haz to have this game already !!

Let's hope the packageing for FFXIII won't be fucked up like the Blue Dragon or Lost Odyssey packageing.

FFVII had 3 discs but FFVIII and FFIX both had 4 discs. It wasn't a big deal as usually once you progressed to a certain area in the game you were fine and didn't have to change discs often.
But FF7,8 and 9 were all on Compact Discs not DVDs. If the 360 had to use CDs instead of DVDs it would be the equivalent of about 40 CDs!
