In an interview with VG247 during GamesCom, Square Enix producer Hiromichi Tanaka said that discussions with Microsoft surrounding its Xbox Live policy are one of the reasons Final Fantasy XIV has yet to be announced for the console. "Because 360 has its own policy with Xbox Live that is different from [the] internet, that's something we're in discussions with Microsoft [about], to come to an agreement," Tanaka said.
Tanaka also revealed that the phrase "launch timing" was cut out of SCEA CEO Jack Trenton's "Final Fantasy XIV exclusivity" announcement at E3, but it does not mean that the MMO won't see life on the Xbox 360 in the future. Final Fantasy XIV is set for a 2010 release on the PS3 and Windows-based PCs, and is sure to include the cutest Chocobos you've ever seen in high-definition.

I want FFXIV on the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. I'm going to buy FFXIV for the PC. All of my friends will be buying different versions.
I want FFXIV to be on the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. I own all platforms, but I want Square Enix to make an engrossing experience I can share with all of my friends.

It may be a server issue, actually. Very few companies have the ability to control their own issues... and even when they do, Microsoft monitors them as part of the service to make sure they are working smoothly.
This was a major reason EA titles were not on Xbox Live for a long time last generation.

We know Microsoft will soften the rules to make it happen. Look at the size limit for XBLA games: went from 50MB to 150MB to 350MB to 2GB now.

^this, if your company can place enough pressure microsoft will become lax with their rules.
as far as ffxiv goes i have a feeling it has to do with cross platform play. while pc+360 is fine since games for windows they dont want to have to have to make necessary changes to accommodate for 360/ps3 cross platform play and imo they shouldnt have to it should be ps3 that should have to make the changes as live for 360/pc is already a established online platform.

Most likely it'll be cross platform like FFXI so it really wont matter which console you get it on.

I believe Microsoft has a problem with 3rd parties wanting to use their own servers, the kind of system that PSN encourages and that even Nintendo leaves optional
Not entirely sure on that, but i seem to remember it was a sticking point with FFXI 360
Microsoft wants it all to run on LIVE, or so i believe.

@ David, no FFXI didnt require a Gold Membership on XBLA... you could have silver and then pay 12$ monthly to SE only.
This is what im currently doing.
Also theres no reason that the game wouldnt be able to run on the same servers as every console/pc that the new game might be made for...
im running FFXI on
360
PS3
PC
PS2
so i know for a fact it can be done.
the only thing stopping FFXIV from being on the 360 is XBLA membership and what MS decides to do with the new game.... also.... hope they find a better way to deal with gamertag/account linking. (FFXI POL account linking was so retarded to manage mules and friends characters)

i doubt that since there are games that already disprove what youre getting at. PSU/FFXI both dont require gold accounts to play but a monthly fee.

i'm happy to pay $30 a year for a solid online network, but if FF14 comes to the xbox and requires a separate fee ON TOP of xbox live, then both squeenix and microsoft can go to hell.
not that i'm too concerned....FF11 was disappointing and definitely made up my mind that i have no interest whatsoever in FF going online.

isn't that how ff11 worked? you had to pay for gold, and then you had to pay to play the game itself on a monthly basis?

nevermind, just found out that it doesn't.
either way, it doesn't take away from what i was getting at. my hope is that microsoft will figure out something that will make gold members not have to pay extra. i'm already paying to play online (and i think it's well worth it), but paying an extra fee for a specific game is almost insulting. it's like if i paid for my internet and then google starts charging me for every search.

MS has no control over that part... SE charges for their online play regardless of what console you choose you pay SE directly.
all gold account members will still have to pay SE to play online... and thats not SE's fault... nor is it MS's fault... its kinda just something that sucks.

MS can easily exert control over the situation by paying SE a certain amount of money to make up for gold members not paying the SE subscription fee. At this point I'm equating MS to the world's greatest philanthropists so it's damned unlikely, but still, it would be nice.

If he doesn't put a lick of research into what he says, why shouldn't I call him out for it? You don't need gold to play FFXI, and it's ridiculous to assume the >$3/month you're putting in to Microsoft will somehow translate into the $13/month that Square Enix charges. Get real...

From what we've seen recently on Microsoft's policies, getting the games to the players is their first priority. The fact that they're in talks is good news for their platform.

That could be it. I remember my FFXI-fanatic friend saying that 360 players were segregated from the other platforms (PC and PS2). He said that the same was the case for Phantasy Star Universe (which he also plays religiously, but plays the 360 version)

Mr. Khan is right, my brother plays PSU on Xbox, the Xbox servers are segregated from the PS2/PC servers. They didn't even let him migrate his old character from the PS2 version to the 360 version, he had to start over.

Is anyone seriously surprised that Sony lied about this? Well, I actually am.
I thought for sure Sony had given up on their "we dont pay for exclusives" policy and just shelled out for FFIV, but I guess I was wrong.
Yes, MS has done the same many times, but its still surprising for me. FFIV was the big "thing" sony had at their E3, at least in my eyes.
