Valve's Steam service just got an injection of Interplay titles, with a host of new games currently available for download. There's the classic Fallout games, which include Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics (available individually for $8.99 or as a bundle for $20), but also Kingpin ($8.99) and Sacrifice ($8.99), the former being a bloody FPS and the latter being an inventive combat-focused RTS. If you've got a PC, we'd suggest you at least check out the original Fallout. There's a demo you can grab from CNET right here.
[Update: Shagittarius reminds us that you can get Fallout games (not to mention Sacrifice and Kingpin) from GoG with no DRM for a few bucks less than Steam.]

Get Fallout from GOG.com instead. No copy protection at all, never need to be connected to play it. Much better than steam.
As far as sacrifice goes one could only look fondly on that title so long after its release...it was crappy in it's day.

Not to mention it's 5.99 on GOG and 10 bucks on Steam.

You can also apply player made mods/patches to Fallout with the Gog copy, something I don't know if you can do with the Steam copy. There is a hi-res patch that makes it nicer to play on big monitors, and a patch that fixes several bugs still in the game after the final developer patch.

You have to be online to download it from steam don't you?

Steam games are identical to retail copies in files, folder structure, and stuff like that so mods will probably work.

Funny, Fallout was one of the few "classic" games I missed playing when it first came out. I played it for the first time right before Fallout3 came out and loved it. True, I immediately installed some of the user-made mods and patches, but I enjoyed it equally as much as Fallout3 -- no nostalgia required.

Everytime you reinstall on steam you have to be online, with GOG. You download it once and get a self contained installer that no one can ever take away from you.

No but there is an Out of This World, sort of the precursor to Flashback. Great game.

Its too expensive on Steam. GoG.com for the win!

Ahh Fallout 3, so mediocre it has fans looking back to the original 3 titles. Luckily i have them on CD from way back when.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it mediocre, but it was certainly weaker in the narrative than the older titles.

As a game? No it's not mediocre, quite good actually. But as a Fallout sequel it couldn't be much worse.

Wow, this almost makes me wish I hadn't bought a mac... almost, but not quite. I can always use bootcamp or a virtual machine if I get the urge to play fallout1+2 again, though I still have the original discs so I'm not too fussed about them being on steam. Come back Interplay, we love you!

Sacrifice and Kingpin are also $5.99 with no DRM on GOG, so basically GOG is your best bet for any of these titles and they have been available for quite a while there. I know a lot of people out there love Steam, but unless you really want to pay extra to have all your games from one service, there is no sense buying any of these newly added Interplay titles there.
Regarding playing on the Mac, DOSBox works in OS X. The Boxer frontend worked great to get Fallout running on my Macbook Pro. If you do want to run Windows games, Boot Camp, VMware Fusion and Parallels have worked great for me, though Monkey Island SE only worked right for me using Boot Camp. I tried with VMware and my screen went crazy and I couldn't make out anything until the VM was killed. I need to test in Parallels yet because I never got around to upgrading to the 4.x series from the 3.x copy I have installed.
