Yay! A tiny glimmer of hope to hold on to!

Incidentally, why would we believe what Sony says in the first place? Didn't they blatantly lie about the new version of the PS3? For obvious reasons of wanting to "surprise" us --that went well, didn't it?-- and business-related issues of course, but I seem to remember someone flat-out denying the existence of it.

Forgive me if someone has already pointed that out, I didn't read all the comments.

Oh, I completely agree. Why do you need PS3 to play our old PS2 games and then in a few years when PS4 comes out why do you need PS4 to play your old PS3 games. It's so over-rated. The coolest thing today is throwing your money away and pawning all your old games for new, greatest console that is only supported until the next one comes out.

I'm sure this has probably already been said many times, but you can get a second hand PS2 from cash generator for next to nothing. Seriously cheap. So if you missed out on some classic games they're still dead easy to get hold of.

Me, I played my PS2 to death anyway so I'm happy to be onto PS3 gaming now

This is a setback and it's almost sacrilegious for PS ,but it's not a huge deal.I welcome the smaller form, energy efficiency, and lower temperature of the slim.(No need for a extra heater in the summer in my small room). To those of you who is really hung up on BC.The options are getting the fat PS3 while they are still available or simply getting a PS2( Don't know why you wouldn't have one already,if you want to play PS2 games THAT much).

I have the 60GB model. Some of you here are making it sound like that somehow PS3 upscaling PS2 games makes them look significantly better; no, it doesn't. They still look like PS2 games. Look like shit once you've played real HD games.

Agreed. Matter of fact, games will looks worse when the PS3 upscales.

I keep PS2 upscaling turned off. I prefer keeping aspect rations to their intended sizes.

What I DO love about the PS2 function is the virtual memory cards. I'll never have to buy another memory card again.

When I bought my 40GB PS3, I wasn't happy it didn't have PS2 BC...I thought it was a big mistake ever...

But no, it wasn't. There are too many PS3 games for me to enjoy, and on top of that there are PSN games you can get in the Store. There is Home and demos....I can't even think of replaying my old PS2 games again.

PS2 BC isn't as a major downfall as you think. If you really want it that bad though, get the older models.

All PS3s >still< has BC, but it's only PS1 BC. That's sort of good enough to me because PS1 has some great classics as well and I don't need to repurchase them from the PSN Store.

I don't really understand why people are going crazy over this PS2 BC. There are too many PS3 & PSN games to enjoy. But that's if you don't already own the 360 though...but still - there are PS3 exclusives like inFamous, MGS4, LBP, Uncharted, Cross Edge and Disgaea....

And PSN Games like Wipeout and FAT PRINCESS...

There are tons of games for you to play on the PS3 and there are still many to come including GoW3, ModNation Racers, Ratchet & Clank Future! =D

I'd like to think that players who still play PS2 games (i.e. me) still have their PS2 console. Any new or potential PS3 gamer will probably forget all about backwards compatability as soon as they start to play Valkyria Chronicles, Uncharted, or any other decent exclusive on the console.

The reason this is a big deal, which most people can't seem to realize, is that Sony is a giant BS machine. They pissed and moaned about MS having crappy BC, saying that the Playstation brand was SO important and everything should be playable on one machine.

Now they don't support ANY -- and it's sad that the 360 BC library isn't bigger, but the enhancements for games it does support = really nice.

All companies are going to hand fans/media PR crap, but Sony really takes the cake in outright lies. IDC what you think of their games library or Blu-ray, but everyone should care how they continuously doubletalk consumers

Except, the PS3s had BC at launch. They took it out because customers wanted a more affordable console. I've come to accept the BC whiners while I happily play on my 60GB PS3 with full BC. They've replaced the price whiners complaining about the PS3 being expensive. If the BC whiners wanted BC so badly, they would have wised up and bought a PS3 with BC before they were being phased out as late as last year (MGS4 PS3 bundle has BC). Tough luck.

Its coming back some day. Remember when Sony denied the first PS3 price cut (and I think this one too?) Well yeah, same thing with BC. In fact, companies like Sony lie all the time when it comes to future features or hardware revisions or what not.

Besides what are they going to do when they discontinue the PS2? Then how are we going to play our PS2 games??

Jesus people just buy a goddamn PS2 if it's that important to you. They're not that expensive and you can bet your ass if Sony released a backwards compatible PS3 it'd be at least that much more.

The problem isn't getting a PS2, it's being forced to buy BOTH a PS2 & PS3. I have a HUGE collection of PS2 games, and a PS2 console that's on it's last legs. When it goes, if I can't play those games, I might as well just throw them in the trash (what a waste of money). If the PS3 is BC, then I can just upgrade to the PS3...but the game selection for the PS3 is so awful right now, I can only find 2 or 3 PS3 games I actually want to play, but I know no new PS2 games are on the horizon. Yes, I want the best of both worlds, but Sony is forcing me to replace my PS2 AND buy a PS3. Of course, Xbox 360 has better (and more) games than the PS3, and it's cheaper. So instead of buying the PS3...I guess I'll just get a 360 instead. Thanks Sony!

I know i'm not saying anything new but i just have to raise my fist in anger as well! I know making the backwards compatibility isn't as easy as just flicking a switch, but i sure want it with all ps3s! I think it's worth the effort to include with the PS3!!

It looks like there are a lot of angry people on this issue. Hopefully this sends a message to Sony!

I find this both sad and frustrating coming from a company that pretty much started the backwards compatibility trend. It was one of those features that years ago I wouldn't expect and frankly wouldn't care much for, but these days in the major console market is quite frankly not only expected but I believe a very important motivator for parents who wish to upgrade their children to the newest machines.

Mind you, I already own a PS3, and its not one of the backwards compatible versions- there was only 1 game that I was interested in moving over from my ps2 -which was marvel vs capcom 2, but now as we all know isn't an issue anymore. My problems lie mainly with friends, co-workers & peers in general who ask me about which console they should pick up moving into the newest generation. Yes, there are pluses and minuses to all of the three major consoles on the market, and for the 'core' gamer there's really only two options, but for those strongly vested in yesteryears technology the backwards compatibility feature is quite an alluring draw.

The fact that the PS2 remains on that market and developers are still coding for the console means that there are a lot of people out there who have yet to make the big switch that are only expanding their game catalog as time passes- With the xbox 360 dominating the next gen market I'd see the ability to play existing games a major benefit for those looking to upgrade to the PS3.

I just think Sony dropped the ball on this one...

It is pretty funny how many people are bitching about the lack of BC. You all had your chance to purchase a PS3 with BC, and there were plenty of warnings that it would be removed from future versions of the console.

I paid the premium price for my PS3 over a year ago, and that PS3 came with premium features.

For those that don't have a PS3 yet, you now have a great opportunity to own some sweet hardware for a lot less than I paid for.

I'm also disappointed that there will be no B/C. I have a PS2 and I've taken good care of it but it is starting to age. I have plenty of PS2 games that I would have loved to play on the PS3, like XENOSAGA EPS1, 2 and 3 for starters.

Who Cares about backwards compatibility for crying out loud, I mean really the system has been out for 3 years this November and they took that way back with the 40 gig unit and people bought and didn't cry then, Then they came out with the newest line up and neither had it. why would you want to play old games with crap graphics in comparison to what the systems games offer today. I mean really are you going to go out and pick up the slim and then grab some ps2 games? no you're not, when is the last time anyone even talked about PS2 games at all either the PSP is more relevant. so please if you must play PS2 games go out and buy one for $40 bucks and game away

My main concern is people like me who got the early editions with BC. What if they die, out of warranty and we have to replace them? Sony expects us to get a new PS3 and a PS2 to replace our old PS3... doesn't seem right. I have got over 2 dozen PS2 games since getting my PS3 and play them weekly...

Now I'm really glad I haven't bought any PS3 games in wait for the console to be what it needs to be for me to ever, ever, EVER buy one.

no psx+ps2 compatibility = no ps3 for me ever, ever, EVER

I have been split between getting ps3 or a 360 all this time, but now SONY generously made the decision for me. So, I guess I should thank them...

Thanks SONY, see you next generation! (But only as long as you by then hopefully have learned from all your idiotic mistakes!)
It was nice while it lasted, two stationary console generations and one portable generation of nothing but pure win is still impressive even if the third console generation is nothing but pure fail on every imaginable level...
Three great consoles and one complete faulire isn't THAT bad after all...
It may leave a bit of a bitter aftertaste of so much sweet but I'm finwe with that, saves mea TON of cash not buying worthless products, after all, so thanks for helping me save money too SONY, boy you guys sure are helpful...
I'll make sure I'll enjoy my old consoles from you in many, many, MANY years to come, my PSX, PS2 and PSP, a little bit extra because of this failure on your side to show the slightest bit of respect or intelligence toward your (now former) fan. So long, suckers! :)

Valid arguments on both sides, but for me lack of BC was a deal breaker. I have a PS2 (and three original PS and a PSP), and a decent PS2 library, but was really disappointed that the PS3 didn't offer BC as a given feature.

If Sony is worried about cannibalizing PS2 sales, why not produce a PS3 with FULL HARDWARE BC, and charge accordingly? I (and more than a few diehard fans) would gladly pay a premium to have this upgraded model. Those who couldn't care less, well, can buy the cheaper, less capable version.

Microsoft didn't seem to have much trouble implementing an emulator into ALL of their consoles, so it can't be that hard. If I ever bought a PS3 it'd be for ps2 games and the few good ps3 games there are. What I think they are doing is to FORCE you to buy the ps2's for $100 in addition to a $300 PS3 instead of including it (which they've already successfully done, why can't they continue doing it?) Why are they doing this? They're greedy. nuff said.

This is crap. My PS2 is getting long in the tooth...DVD's aren't working as well as they used to. I'm getting more game crashes than I used to have. So I'm at a point where I'm debating whether to get a PS3 (with it's still inferior selection of games) or get an XBox 360. The ONE sole reason I have been telling friends why I was going to get the PS3 was because I would be able to play my old games. Now with that out of the picture, I might as well get the XBox. I think Sony is hurting themselves here. Way back when I bought my PS2, I did so because there were quite a few PS1 games I wanted to get and play. I still play several of them because I like them so much. It'll be almost cheaper for me to pick up a new PS2 and an XBox, as buy the overpriced PS3. This is gonna backfire on Sony.
