Modern Warfare 2's 'Special Ops' missions detailed

Billed as the game's co-op mode, Special Ops allows players to perform standalone missions either on their lonesome or with a friend via online or split-screen co-op. Different difficulty tiers are offered for each Special Ops mission -- those bold enough to tackle the harder echelons will receive greater in-game unlockables.
We got a chance to see someone play through "The Gulag" at GamesCom -- a seeming recreation of the shower room from The Rock. The player armed himself at a Left 4 Dead-esque ammo dump, then run-and-gunned his way through a series of enemy-infested rooms. While lacking in the airborne panache that made "Mile High Club" so memorable, it was a neat little slice of gameplay -- we can't wait to see what other precarious scenarios Infinity Ward drops us into when Modern Warfare 2 hits store shelves this November.

Oh God. An entire campaign's worth of Mile High Club on veteran. The horror......the horror!
Radical Dylan @ Aug 21st 2009 3:39PM
But it's co-op... that has to make it easier right? right?!?
but at least spec ops is only an extra part of the game... there still is single player campaign, and online multiplayer...
the_pop @ Aug 21st 2009 4:30PM
The only thing that made Mile High difficult was the timer.
Cr4sh Dummy @ Aug 21st 2009 5:42PM
If Mile High Club had co-op it would of been easier.
I still want to know if you can select your difficulty for the mode.
Snipermike @ Aug 21st 2009 3:33PM
GOTY book it done.
tmacairjordan87 @ Aug 21st 2009 3:39PM
Doing mile high club on veteran is still probably my most proud achievement I have this gen. Tough enough that I punched a hole in my wall, but one of the most satisfying feelings I've ever had playing games when I finally beat it.
Nerdy Desi @ Aug 21st 2009 3:44PM
That mission is so short, but oh so sweet. I'm very happy to see its coming back bigger than ever in the sequel.
amart @ Aug 21st 2009 3:46PM
You punched a hole in the wall?lol that's intense.. It took me about 2 hours of playing it over and over and over again until finally I beat it. Then my friend who was over at the time, wanted the achievement, and I got it on the first try... once you do it once, its not so bad.
But hey, only 2% of cod4 have it so kudos!
baby sea tuna @ Aug 21st 2009 3:46PM
Like in real life, I'm still not a member.

Haon @ Aug 21st 2009 3:53PM
It was the last thing for me as I completed every single thing in single and multi. It was soooo damn satisfying.
ejordan @ Aug 21st 2009 3:55PM
two hours? I spent the better part of two days trying to beat that! Like playing R-Type again.
Jason @ Aug 21st 2009 4:01PM
How do you check what % of people have got an achievement?
Look At This Suit @ Aug 21st 2009 4:19PM
I honestly had more trouble with NFITWR on Veteran than I did with MHC. Still the most satisfying 1k/1k I have, though.
Lone Starr @ Aug 21st 2009 3:42PM
IW really has it in for all the other games this season it seems.
StLouisRibs7734 @ Aug 21st 2009 10:13PM
What other games?

Losers always complain about their best...

I'm only borrowing your Hum-Vee!
FNG @ Aug 21st 2009 3:51PM
losers whine about their best... winners go home and fuck the prom queen
appropriate with the screen cap and all
PJ @ Nov 9th 2009 4:17PM
video game winners don't f*** the prom queen, sorry pal
epsilon343 @ Aug 21st 2009 3:49PM
I was looking forward to Modern Warfare 2 but not exactly counting down the days, but after reading the previews on this mode I'm suddenly a lot more excited. Can't wait.
Darayz @ Aug 21st 2009 4:00PM
You had me at "shower room" from The Rock.
Juan @ Aug 21st 2009 4:14PM
"One of the most thrilling segments in the entire game."? Maybe I should play it on something other than Veteran.
Neuromancer @ Aug 21st 2009 4:51PM
But will there be any assassinations from a first person perspective, this time around?!
Bushman311 @ Aug 21st 2009 5:29PM
Seeing as how MW2 is an FPS... I'm going to assume yes.
Wardo @ Aug 21st 2009 5:25PM
The Mile High Club is what single-handedly put me off playing games on the hardest difficulty level. The game itself was hard enough on veteran and then when you think it's all over, they throw MHC in your face and let's face it, you have to beat it since you already beat every thing else on veteran.
*shivers* it still gives me nightmares. Oh but the satisfaction I felt when beating it... I think I jizzed myself.
aRcane @ Aug 21st 2009 5:40PM
Was it harder on pc? i beat this on the 5th try, and yes it was on veteran. Maybe it was because i had a keyboard and mouse? Anyways Kudos for whomever beat it.
aRcane @ Aug 21st 2009 5:45PM
i meant EASIER on pc.
WTFox @ Aug 22nd 2009 1:56AM
I don't think I've ever bragged about a video game achievement ever, but...
...I beat MHC on veteran. There, said it. ; )
djlystics @ Nov 15th 2009 4:06PM
HAHAHA!!!
rikthagreat @ Aug 22nd 2009 7:17PM
I don't think I've ever bragged about reading a bragging rights comment ever, but....
....i just did. There, said it. ; )
TheE3Guy @ Aug 24th 2009 3:29PM
I broke 2 controllers trying to beat Mile High Club on veteran, true story...no it's not.
thedocgerbil @ Oct 15th 2009 11:46PM
I never understood what was so hard about this - I got it on my second or third try. Maybe it's because I read "Inside Delta Force" and it just came naturally to me.
Temmy @ Nov 3rd 2009 8:23AM
Took me around an hour of constant restarting to do it - along with a YouTube guide. But my friend did it on his 3rd attempt... well... he got to the end and the slowmo bit where you need to take out the last guy - his pistoled reloaded (in slowmo haha) and then he got to the end again... shoots the hostage in the face for the 'fun' then STRAIGHT AWAY got to the end again and jumped out of the place :) I hated him.. haha
Oliver @ Nov 16th 2009 5:08AM
Speaking of mile high club, it made me so f*ing frustrated when after more than 2 hour I finally made it to the hostage for the first time and out of all the nerves i accidently shot him in the head, imagine how ballistic i went after that! 40 minutes later I got there again and this time I didnt miss... After a while i worked out a nice tactic which i was doing every time, you have to depend on your team and flash grenades and just rush to cover, makes it a lot easier
