Sad news from the front, soldiers. DICE is not currently working on any new Battlefield 1943 maps or content for the downloadable hit, which has now drafted over a million players. Speaking with Joystiq, DICE Producer Gordon Van Dyke said the company is definitely working on the game's squad-swapping bug -- he believes it's a server-side fix that will hopefully be resolved soon -- but that all the effort at the moment is being put behind getting Battlefield: Bad Company 2 out the door.
"We need to figure out what's the best thing for the community. What's the best thing for the franchise?" Van Dyke told us about why the online hit isn't getting further development attention. He currently has "no idea" about when the company will get to work on more content for Battlefield 1943. That certainly calls for a sad face emoticon, don't you think? :(

Yeah it was a lot of fun when first released, and the nostalgia was a huge draw for me, but the Coral Seas map wasn't my thing and it added little to the game for me. I hope some new maps come down the pike eventually, otherwise the game is going to fizzle.

I concur with both of you guys. My elation for the game has kinda tapered off and I've moved on to other games like Madden and Shadow Complex. This game was immensely fun and the nostalgia is a huge factor for that. But I don't think I'll play this game once I hit 10k kills (I currently have somewhere in the vicinity of 8800) if they don't add new content.

PREDICTION: Dice will never add anything else for 1943 because they want its users to migrate over to Bad Company 2.

YAY!!! ANOTHER company that doesn't want me to give them more money! I don't think this game would have any bearing on BF:BC2's market. Maybe not everyone would like leaving the WWII setting on this. I have the feeling that 43 has had more activity than Bad Company 1.

I know this has nothing to do with BF 1943, but the Joker maps are on the PSN Store now

Im still loving this game. Not that bored of the 3 maps, and Coral Sea i dont even touch. Van Dyke wants to know whats best more the franchise?...MORE MAPS..simple answer. Seems a bit odd...theres no new maps planned because ''they don't know''
Once BC2 comes out, this game will be forgotten about from the games. As it seems the developers have already give up on it.

So long as DICE gets Bad Company 2 out on time, I'm fine with this.

"whats best for the franchise"?
to me this sounds like they were so unprepared for this to be the hit that it was that they had no plans for any kind of support and now they will not support it yet because they dont want it to potentially effect the sales of bad company 2. be cause some people will be buying it mainly for the online componant. also they wouldnt mind if intrest in this title which they have already made way way way way way way way more money than they invested, waned thus allowing them to take down most of the servers and give them to bad company 2.
they had to used a lot more servers than they wanted 2 originally because of the initial damand which was the reason why you could get a game for toffee on relase day or 3 days after that. remember servers cost money.

While I enjoy the game and still play it I don't play it as much. The three maps can get rather tedious. Eh it sucks though knowing their won't be any new content for it in the near future.

The easy solution to help sell games AND keep the community happy (and loyal) is to allow user made maps and mods. Microsoft or Sony will never allow that though:(

Ever heard of UT3? YEAH, It had FULL mod support just like P.C, ALL Maps, weps, mods from PC also work on the PS3 version. The 360 version? Not a chance!

The reason I bought my PS3 was to support UT3 and because my xbox 360 broke on my a second time.

hmm this is baaaaaaaaaaad decision on DICE's part. I mean I really enjoy the gameplay of 1943, as its challenging and fun, but I assumed that with only three maps initially they would surely be working on more to keep people playing. Let's be honest here; no ones gonna care about any shooters besides modern warfare 2 once November rolls around. ODST will be out soon too.. so why then would I want to buy more maps for 1943? ... I would buy them right now though.

I don't get it, the game is a huge hit and you currently do not want to add to it. I'm sure the million+ people that bought it would love more content. Hire some more frickin people and do both. Bad Company was a fun game and all but I like 1943 more. Its got that classic BF feel to it.

I can't imagine a game published by EA, especially one that sold this well, isn't going to get milked to death with DLC.
I'll believe it when I (don't) see it.

That stinks. I am a recent fan of the Battlefield franchise on the Frostbite engine and 1943 really got me playing Bad Company again after I finished the 360 achievements on 1943. Like EA did with BF:MC, I am sure they will kill the BC servers when BC2 comes out so it would be nice if DICE can at least then pick-up support for 1943 with new maps to keep it fresh and add variety from just playing BC2.

It's not... perhaps you're a little lost my friend? This is a blog about video games, not cnn.com. Many visitors to this site are currently playing and enjoying this game, so news that the developer isn't planning on rolling out new maps anytime soon is of interest to many of the readers here.

This was a real chance for them to expand the brand to console gamers who only know COD and Halo as premier FPS games on the console. Would it have been really hard to have a small team repurpose some maps from the old games through the Frostbite engine and throw them out for a few bucks to keep the brand going?
This makes especially little sense when you realize that Bad Company 2 isn't coming until March 2010, so they have nothing to really go up against COD (not that 1943 would outsell it by any means, but it's all about developing the brand).
And I have it on PS3, so this news disheartens me even more because it tells me that they're probably not going to fix the issue with the utterly broken voice chat. This tells me all that I need to know about future BF games and their support.

Bullshit.
You have no idea what's good for the community?! I DO. SOME NEW FUCKING MAPS!
That's PRETTY MUCH all the fucking game needs. SO GIVE THEM TO US ALREADY.
COPY PASTA INTO 1943. GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER AND GET SOME MORE MAPS OUT CAUSE I AM SICK AND FUCKING TIRED OF THE SAME THREE.
Although, I never get bored of Guadal Canal, Iwo Jima and Wake Island are really starting to bore the piss out of me.
...Forgive the nerd rage, I really do love the game and I play it multiple times during the week.
But seriously guys, get some damn DLC out already.

Having more control over matches in the content we *already have* would be a nice consolation prize.

So I guess when I get that tour of duty II achievement I won't be playing this that much anymore. Though like many of you, I'm getting bored with the three maps and quite frankly I suck in the planes so Air Superiority is kind of out for me. Or I sit in AA the whole time.
This sucks.

They might want to fix the chat communications on the PS3 version of the game. Thats one of the biggest things holding back the BattleField games on PS3.

I know they have to move onto bigger things, as mentioned Bad Company 2, but it would've been nice if they still had a small dev team set aside to make 1943 a better game than what it is. It still has way too many issues to make it enjoyable.
With how fun it was and as many issues as it has, $14.99 is overpriced for this title. And, it makes me fear for Bad Company 2's online experience.
