Good selection this week.

Namely the Fleetwood Mac and Tom Petty. Although I'd like to see ALL of the tracks from Rumours and Full Moon Fever as DLC.

Glad to see more Fleetwood Mac, but they're not necessarily songs I'm interested in however.

Two of the tracks are on or already on GH:WT, GH:SH, GH5 (Too much time merging those lists...)

So it's become easier for me to decide what DLC not get. Check my spread sheet, and eliminate dupes.

GH5's new battle modes look really nice, so it might be getting the bulk of my musical gaming this fall. I'll need a break from The Beatles, so it's probably the way I'll go.

You've got it backwards. You're supposed to buy the DLC to give you more reasons NOT to buy another crappy guitar hero game.

I have to agree here. You can either buy 4-5 different discs and get all of the songs...or you can just hand pick the songs from the disc you want and play them all in Rock Band.

Sure. But what if the value of the DLC I want surpasses the value of the game? Are you willing to cover that difference for me once I hit $60?

Don't you mean $180? You just mentioned three different GH games they released as competition to RB... not one.

tmac was showing the value and extended life and replay-ability (sp?) HMX is giving their customers with their weekly DLC. Activision does not try to match that level of support for the GH series. They would rather just pump out another game...

500+ songs, and You do a mystery set list, and I get "Any way You Want it" every time. a bonus song added to a set, and it's a repeat. I love me some Journey, but come on...

Think about it like this. You grandma gives you $500 dollars, and you intend to spend it evenly between Guitar Hero and Rock Band (and you have perfectly functional controllers that you personally like).

GHWT: $60 for 15 good songs, GHM: $60 for 15, GHSH: $60 for 20, and GH5: $60 for 25. That leaves $10 for 5 good downloadable songs.

RB2: $60 for 30 good songs and renting RB1 and exporting it's 25 good songs: $12. That leaves $178 for 89 good downloadable songs.

In conclusion, the GH method gives you 80 good songs for $250 while spread across several discs while the RB method gives you 144 good songs for the exact same price on one single disc That means if you don't like the RB2 setlist at all, you'll still get more good songs through RB DLC.

Decisions, decisions...

a: the list looks sweet, looks like I'll be buying all of them
b: there is NEVER a good reason to buy Guitar Hero. Activision makes shit quality games.
c: Correct me if I am wrong, but isnt there more song choices when you put in your one RB disk (800 + songs to date) than all 50 something whored out versions of GH combined?

I had posted this about a week ago on the article with the GH5 backwards compatibility announcement. I think it is a fitting answer, so pardon the repeat post...

Songs available for GH5 --
-GH5 disc = 85
-Previous DLC = 152 of 158
-GHWT (if you are lucky and they get ALL of the songs re-licensed) = 86
-GHSH (same qualifier as above) = 48
Total songs = 371

Songs available for RB2 --
-RB2 disc = 84
-RB1 disc = 55 (I already subtracted 3 that were not transferable)
-RB DLC = 700+
-RB Network = 1000s
Total songs = ???

Well. Harmonix just won me over completely...they now feature my three favorite artists of all time.

The Beatles: A whole game devoted to my favorite band ever.
Tom Petty: Two songs and I'm sure there'll be more to come.
AC/DC: Well the whole bloody trackpack

Now...I need more Cheap Trick...and Jet.

I know RB1 had Are You Gonna Be My Girl and GH2 had Surrender, but can anyone tell me if there's more of these bands in these fancy rythym games?!

Yes! RB gets more songs that are supposed to be in the next Guitar Hero game.

Less reason to buy GH, and that is a great thing.

Time to update the animations in RB. Just saying I'm a little tired of them, and GH is something different. I don't need to see yet another track of the drummer turning to point at the camera, yet somehow managing to play the drums with his stick out, and for the singer to grab the camera yet again and stare right at it.

I've paid $150 for those three games, and that included a GH:WT guitar. There are over 50 tracks at a minimum I want on the three games. That's $100 right there. And those 50 don't include songs already on RB - that's GH on disc tracks. Plus the guitar. And there's also a few DLC tracks for GH that aren't on RB.

I play both, and I'll be getting Lego Rock Band and The Beatles:Rock Band as well. I enjoy both games. Some of you don't. Activision is the devil. And EA is an angel. The opposite was true 5 years ago, and I'm sure it will flip again 5 years from now.

In my view, I don't even consider EA in the equation (even though they are part of Rock Band).

Harmonix is the company that is responsible for the quality of Rock Band, and their efforts to continue pumping out high quality DLC means they get much more of my money than Neversoft/Activision.

I play both too, but I definitely wait until I can get the GH games at a discount. Paying $30 or less is about all I'll commit. That being said, if GH offers a bunch of the songs from GHWT and GHSH, and does it for the same $5 like Rock Band did, I'll probably pony up and get the tracks to use them in GH5. Hell, it might even get me to play it more...

To not get into another huge GH vs RB discussion, I agree with you about Rock Band's animations.

I really wish that they could release an update with new ones. I've played the game so much that its getting a little stale to me, but I guess thats what happens with all video games that you play to death.

So... actually, I think my argument is invalid now. Carry on :P

I still love how activision says that certain songs are coming out for one of the four yearly gh games and then harmonix gets a palm full of diamond dust and busts them in the face before activision can actually get it out.....hahahahahahaha.

you are right, it is Red Octane, former sister company to Harmonx who HELPED develop the original GH. HMX moved on to create a bigger and better game with help from MTV while Activision bought Red Octane and continued to re release the same game over and over again with the same graphics, the same shitty game play, the same awful charting, and to top things off they also continued to rip off HMX by copying Rock Band.

By owning and distributing Red Octane's products... Activision is accountable for Red Octane's lousy ability to make next gen games.

also... it is important to note, I never said COD was the worst FPS out there.but it isnt the best either and to be fair, GH isnt the worst music game either. Ever play Rock Revolution? The point isnt how bad they are compared to the entire genre, just to themselves.

0 improvement, same shit, different game

It's a nice try, but not quite right. Red Octane didn't help develop Guitar Hero. They created a guitar and commisioned Harmonix to make a game for it.

And initially, we weren't mad at Activision for releasing the same game over and over again. We were mad that they changed the formula of a good game. GH 1&2 were great games. When Neversoft was given devlopment duties on 3, they just fucked it all up. The timing, the look, the feel, the over-charting, virtual rock stars and "boss battles" were all part of the reason GH3 sucked and where the Neversoft hate began.

They've gotten a lot better since then from the demos I've played. Metallica especially seemed to be really well polished. However, I'm happy to say that I've not given any money to Activision since GH3 and don't plan to in the future.
