this is sorta a moot argument but i see sales for 13 months of live for $30 no tax free shipping pretty often.

the monthly fee does pay for more content in a way as well, like free games 1vs100, early game demos(Lost planet 2 co-op demo came out this week only on 360), useless ign insider streams, interviews, game night events, contest giveaways. online integration on the dashboard is excellent on the 360, ps3 tucks it under the psn and the little news tracker.

Because it's $50. That's 5/6 of an entire game. It will always be brought up as a point because it's not an insignificant number.

How many of those features that you just listed require you to pay a fee. When you compare a free service to a fee-supported service, there obviously should be advantages to a fee-supported service. My comment was about comparing the 299.99 price of both the 360 and the new PS3 and what you get out of the box.

Either way, you can only use it in one machine at a time...

its dumb to compare the price of a 500GB OEM hard drive when the xbox 360 hdd accessory, is a retail product, and comes with a transfer cable, and software.

if you want to be fair the accessory should be compared to a retail external hard drives with a 2.5in hdd inside.

It really comes down to the options... Do you need a Rechargeable battery to play on the 360? no, AA's will do just fine.. Do you need WiFi? -No, plug in thru cable (best way to play online IMO). Live is Superior, even though we pay for it (peanuts..like the price for one game, actually less).. my only beef is the price of the HD's... really that's all the sony fanboys can one-up the 360 boys..

Live trumps sonys whatever..

360 has more (better IMO) games..

when it comes to Sports, you will be a FOOL to buy for the ps3 over the 360! I have over 5 friends that own both consoles (I own both also) who buy sports games SOLELY for the 360. That right there is a great loss for the ps3.

Netflix is bangin'! -and i'm not a movie head.. full metal jacket was watched for the very first time.

I can't front, I own all three, and I REFUSE to support the Wii.. It's done.. My son just went down south for the summer and ONLY took the 360!!

So yeah, the ps3 is an ok secondary console... Just "slightly" over the Wii... But truth be told, sony messed up not including BC.. I gotta plug in my ps2 to play my Front Mission 2-3?? -FAIL! -Thank goodness for the BC ps3's.. well, not really...

You have 2 systems... Very similar in content.. But the 360 gets my money and attention hands down... There's a reason people buy multiple consoles.. myself among them.. IT'S A BANGIN' CONSOLE FOR WHAT IT DOES!!!

I hate to say it, but the ps3 will stay 3rd... There is nothing it can do to grab that 3rd spot.. Nothing. The 360 just got too much going for it.

Arguing the facts just makes you look stupid.. you cant beat facts.. 360 is the better console for what it does, not how POWERFUL it is...

You want powerful and blu-ray? get a ps3 or a blu-ray player..

Want a Gamers console?? LOL, get a 360 easy!

LOL "I ZAIZ THE THREEZICZTII IZ BETTAH! I RIGHTZ IF YOU ARGUEZ YOU LOOK STUPIDZ!"

Sorry, but your arguments don't hold a drop of water.

-The fee for Live is peanuts? Really? Then the the PS3 has never been overpriced, after all the difference between then and now is just two peanuts. Oops..
Live may have better features overally, but those features are marginal compared to the actual playing online, things that the PSN does just fine, for free. Those features are nice, but 50 dollars a years nice? not even.

-Many people need wifi. Why? because they either don't have direct access to the router (just think about all the ones that have centralized wifi in their apartment complex) or simply have their consoles in their living room. Not many people keep their router in the living room.

-AA batteries don't do just fine. You're kidding yourself if you think it's really viable to just buy new batteries every time, unless you puke money, of course.

-Netflix is good but the PS3 is getting it's own video service. Nothing to see here.

-Sports games only on the 360? Amazon doesn't agree. http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/videogames/ref=pd_ts_pg_1?ie=UTF8&pg=1
Madden PS3: ranked 14th. Madden 360: ranked 17th. Oops.

-Better games on the 360? Metal Gear solid 4, Uncharted, Killzone 2, infamous and a lot of other PS3 exclusive disagree. They're pretty much equivalent so far, and the next 6 months are strongly in favor of the PS3.

Sorry mate, but you won't see the "facts" before a few months, and everything now hints to a very solid possibility that Sony is slowly gaining the upper hand. Microsoft will have to do much more than cutting the price on their top of the line (but still radically underfeatured compared to the PS3) model to change that. And in one month it'll be Tokyo Game Show. Who do you think will win there?

the reason they didnt put wifi in the console is so that it means more stable online play the difference is noticable. people make the argument that wifi is as stable as a cable.

if its setup perfectly yes, but there are going to be people who get on with a terrible signal, leeching off a neighbors connection, wifi also has hiccups, suffers from interference and especially for upstream. Any disruption in service can mean a game ending abruptly.

also if someone is making the argument that in some instance wifi is necessary thats bunk because you can always invest in a very long Ethernet cable. the only reason wifi would be necessary is if you're planning to leech off someone elses wifi.

deepfriedsushi.. So adding wifi to a console will suddenly make it unstable ?

Having wifi as an option will make the connection unstable ? Really ?
You live in a big house and your internet connection is on the ground floor and your ps3 on the third floor, using your stupid logic in that scenario I should run a network adaptor all the way up the stairs through the different floors, when I could just get a wifi repeater and use the wifi connection directly.. Yes yes talk about bullshit..

Wifi is only unstable if you move outside of the wifi signal range, your console is sat at a static location same as your wifi enabled router (wifi gateway whatever your using) if you have a big house you can get a repeater. Since everything is stable there is no difference between a wifi connection as opposed to a cabled connection...

Oh yes one other thing the PS3 has a gigabit copper connection, so I guess it makes it 10x better because its capable of 10x the speed of the 360, using your stupid logic.

The worst logic of it all is that wifi is only used by people that leach off of other people, where did you come up with that one then ? wow just wow honestly I think your the new dumb ass of the year.

Having a wired connection has never and will never be an option for my family. We have a bit of an older house (built in the 90's) with a large addition, multiple computers, consoles, devices etc to use the internet between everyone. I always hear people saying Wi-Fi isn't stable but I just don't see it as reality. I've used Wi-Fi pretty much exclusively for over 5 years now and I always have a super good connection without any issues.

I can't believe some people are so brainwashed they have convinced themselves that having Wi-Fi built into the box is a bad thing. How is it a bad thing to have the option to use both? It's not like you can't use a wired connection with the PS3 if you so desire. Saying MS left Wi-Fi out to improve the stability of the wired connection shows a a lack of intelligence and even a basic understanding of how electronics operate.

People are also missing that a $300 Elite does nothing because it doesn't lower the cost of entry. A $300 PS3 actually lowers the cost of entry by 25%. If anything, it's true that the Arcade has canabalized sales of the more profitable SKUs for MS and in a way they have painted themselves into a corner. The only price drop that makes a difference in this circumstance is lowering the entry price of the Arcade by $50 or $100. Otherwise, it's of little consequence and there isn't any comparison between a $300 PS3 & a $300 360. It's dumb to argue otherwise. Maybe if that $300 360 came with a year of Live & Netflix, 2 games and built in Wi-Fi they would be comparable.

There's a clear indication that the wind has turned. Just look at the comments here on joystiq.
Until a week ago, as soon as someone dared to make a comment in favor of the PS3 and against the 360, he'd get immediately voted down by an army of 360 fanboys.

Now the 360 fanboys like REP96st that spew their microsofy propaganda as "facts that make you looks stoopid if you don't agree" are the ones grayed out.

Winds of change...

It's not a fundamental shift of the wind, it's just that there has been a run of great Sony news lately, rallying the Sony fans to the site to read more actively, and vote accordingly.

This happens all the time, whenever there's an event which is either exclusive to one of the big three (like Sony gamers' day, or Nintendo's October Media Summit), or heavily favors one of them (like Sony and Gamescom this time, Microsoft and E308, or Nintendo and E306, but the latter predates the voting system)

Says the one spewing the grayed out microsoft propaganda. Maybe you should ask yourself why.

By november we'll have Uncharted 2 out, and some other big sony exclesives incoming. If any, unless MS announces something radical, Sony will have even more the upper hand than now.

Calling someone a "sony shill" doesn't add any ground to your lackluster arguments, I'm afraid.

True gamers are very enthusiastic about a stronger Sony, why?
Because it means that Microsoft and Nintendo will have to up their quality and core offering to keep up instead of staying confortably in their niche.
Gamers in general have nothing to gain from one of he biggest players in the industry lagging behind.
Microsoft fanboys, yeah, they'll probably be pretty hurt. Too bad.

Do go on. You think that accusing someone whose arguments you can't counter of being a "sony shill" will give more solid ground to what you write?

Maybe you forget the fact that a lot of this "energizing" the sony fanbase feels comes from the games. Uncharted 2, Gran Turismo 5, God of War 3, MAG, Ratchet and Clank, Heavy Rain, White Knight Chronicles... There are just a few titles, but the exclusive lineup for the next 6-8 months is simply on another level. So i'm afraid your "go back to the games" argument holds as much water as the rest. Not much.

The generation is too far along? Really? We're 3 years into a generation that according all console producers will last 10. I understand that seeing your beloved Microsoft risking to go down in 3rd makes you feel cold chills, but come on, reality check please.

Sony has a history of astroturfing and planting spokespersons on blogs and websites. You just fit this profile all too well.

and in the end, you just aren't a good reprensentation of the PS community.

Ahah, oh goodness, you're truly hilarious. Thanks a lot for pubblicizing my blog, by the way. Much appreciated :D

Unfortunately for your weak-legged arguments, I blog about what's interesting, even marketing-wise, since marketing is my line of work.
It's not my fault if there hasn't been much of interest on the 360/Wii front in the last couple of weeks. This week has been extremely heavy on PS3 news, and as such I write a lot about the PS3. If you take your time and read a lil deeper, you'll see a lot of posts about games on other systems (I normally blog only about what I like, so you won't see many negative posts). You'll see posts about PS3 games, PC games, PSP games, DS games, Wii Games and oh my God, 360 games! The latest one to catch my attention has been MagnaCarta 2, if i recall correctly. I'm waiting for it quite eagerly.

According to your logic, anyone that's not turning a complete blind eye on the fact that the PS3 has been dominating the news in the past couple weeks must be a rabid sony fanboy or a spokesperson. Lol. This means that the 90% of the blogosphere can be defined as such.

I see what you did there...

Sorry to burst your little bubble. But I'm not a "fan of sony". I'm a "fan of gaming". And Sony gearing up in the market benefits gaming as a whole.
The only ones that refuse to understand that are the rabid microsoft fanboys.

Ordeith

LOL ... Are you trying to say that MS doesn't have an even deeper more rich history of Astroturfing? They pretty much wrote the book and it's indoctrinated into their business practices. ARE YOU BEING SERIOUS?

WTF?

In 2001, the Los Angeles Times accused Microsoft of astroturfing when hundreds of similar letters were sent to newspapers voicing disagreement with the United States Department of Justice and its antitrust suit against Microsoft. The letters, prepared by Americans for Technology Leadership, had in some cases been delivered via a mailing list to deceased people or incorrect addresses, where the recipients forwarded them without correction.

Microsoft tried to hire people to contribute to Wikipedia. Not wanting to do the edits directly, they were looking for an intermediary to make edits and corrections favorable to them. Why? It was apparently both to let people know that Microsoft will not 'enable death squads with their UUIDs' and also to fight the growing consensus that OOXML contains a useless pile of legacy crap which is unfit for standardization.

Should I continue?

We aren't even talking about the actual illegal stuff yet. Hell, we haven't even scratched the surface yet. This can get really fun. I've had this argument many times with people and to be honest there is no other corporation in the last 25 years that has done more unethical, illegal, questionable and downright immoral actions that has done more to HURT and monopolize the industry than MS.

I don't even think secret deals like the Nazi's and IBM equates to most of the stuff MS has done in it's bid to dominate everything related to computers.

I'm not even saying Sony hasn't done some questionable shit with it's root kit DRM fiasco, forcing standardization of proprietary formats among the myriad of other things. But, compared to MS CORP they are like little choir boys. Seriously, there is no comparison at all between the two monoliths.

I beg you to say otherwise. I'm itching for a good fight.

As for Abriael -

I think calling him an actual shill is grasping for straws because you don't have an argument. I'm not even saying Sony doesn't have Shills that frequent Joystiq but I've seen nothing on here to say that he or anyone else is a corporate shill. There are a few people I can say with 100% certainty are MS shills. The one I know FOR SURE is Marty ... that one is super obvious.

Griffin. You're a putz. The PlayStation 3 was sittin at $400 when the Elite was sittin at $400. I'm also askin myself, is this really going to make a difference? You've got $300 in your pocket and you can take an Xbox 360 with a 120GB HDD, or you can get a top of the line Blu-ray Player with FREE WIFI and a FREE ONLINE GAMEPLAY. Sony's PlayStation 3 also has quality first person titles and plenty of the them. To add to that, everyone who wants a Wii and an Xbox 360, probably already has them. The wait was not for a 360 price drop as they were sitting at $200 long ago.

Sony has the edge with Blu-ray technology. Its Final Fanatasy XIII with 3 DVD's that are compressed, or a single uncompressed Blu-ray disc. Its also mentioned that the PlayStation 3's price drop has developers "extremely pleased." The price drop is a good deal for Sony, for Microsoft, it makes no difference. Its also cheaper to just buy a new HDD for the 360, than spend more money just buy the same thing, with a bigger HDD. The Jasper is now in them both. The PS3's model has a 45nm chip which is rumoured to increase performance over previous models. Again, the world was not waiting for a Xbox 360 Price drop, any gamer who says that is fearful of Sony's effect on the gaming market. The world was whining and complaining the PlayStation 3 was too much. Well, its $50 more than a Wii which everyone has. The 360 has been sitting at $50 below the Wii and can't outsell the Wii still. So what does it matter? Best Blu-ray player on the market and Free WiFi? or the same old 360 thats been on the market forever?
