If you're feeling ye olde fashioned and footage of Final Fantasy XIV in action is just too newfangled for you, don't fret. Square-Enix has released a fresh batch of perfectly still images from the game during GamesCom -- and they're very, very ... green. Hey, at least they're more exciting than the previously released scenery shots. These are full of the good stuff: menus, characters and -- most of all -- action. Well, as much action as there can be in a static picture.

Is Uematsu-san composing the music? If so, I'm so onboard for this.

Yeah, I can't believe how great this looks. Hopefully Square improves the gameplay in XIV as much as they did the graphics.

Snowblind:
Many people prefer a flat subscription fee to the alternative nickel-and-diming methods for MMO revenue, which bring major problems of their own.
Then there's the odd fully free MMO, but those are hardly even the same genre. The content and service you get with those will never even approach the level of a subscription game. Those games stagnate within a matter of months, whereas subscription games have a steady stream of content, decent customer service, and stable servers for years on end.
Everything I've heard says The Old Republic will use a subscription model, incidentally. They would never be able to pay for what they're planning without one.

Why do I feel that "Versus" is canned?

It hasn't been *that* long. Last we saw of it was the trailer that came with the FFXIII demo. That's, what, a few months?
I'm not shocked they didn't show it at E3 or GamesCom. As both FFXIII and FFXIV will be releasing sooner, there's no reason to show anything new of it - keep the hype focused on these two games instead.

Final Fantasy? MMOs? This be a site of video games, is it not?
Squaresoft need to cut this crap and hurry around to releasing Space Invaders Extreme 2.

Not enough people care about MMOs to justify a mention on a mainstream blog such as Joystiq, and fans of Final Fantasy are driven primarily be nostalgia rather than any genuine enjoyment of the modern incarnations. We all know that Final Fantasy died with Kefka's last laugh.

I think the Blizzcon Cataclysm announcement blows your theory away.

Yeah I think my point would be that there's a far smaller audience that truly care about another Space Invaders remake.

Though take note I also don't care for Final Fantasy or MMO's either, I'm just here for the screenshots and general comment swooping :)

Why do you insist on still calling them "Squaresoft" while acknowledging their acquisition of Taito which occurred two years after their Enix merger?
I'm glad you speak for all Final Fantasy fans though. It's good to know there are still a few pretentious twats mumbling about the good old days.

"pretentious twat"
This coming from somebody who considers Mark of the Wolves as the highpoint in 2D fighting? Okay, whatever you say, bucko.
Nelson, there's a typo in the headline.

they've said not, to use Skype or vent instead.
Guess it has to do with cross platform compatibility. (cos PS3 and PC can both use keyboards for typing, but not the same voip solutions)

It seems kind of wrong that in the few months we've known about FFXIV, we've seen about as much as we have of FFXIII, even the latter was announced 3 years ago.

FFXIV has been in development for as long as XIII too. They showed off some of it years back when giving some tech demos of the Crystal Engine. I think it was called "rapture project" or something then.

Looking at the graphics for FFXIII, I believe theses screenshots for FFXIV are for the PC version which uses a high-end graphic board.
I'm concerned how the console version will look like.
I know that the textures would be a cut-down version of the PC version, but concerned of "how much".
For example, the following pic is a screenshot of a field in FFXIII,
and as you can see the texture for the grass and stuff are kind of low res.
I'm expecting the console version to look more like FFXIII in graphic-quality.
Or maybe Square-Enix gained a license to use the Crysis engine for FFXIV :p

They ARE using the Crystal Tools game engine to run Final Fantasy XIV............

Thanks for the info.
So maybe that gives the answer.
FFXIII is also using Crystal Tools, so I guess the graphics for the PS3 version of FFXIV would look similar to FFXIII.
hmm... I really want to buy the PS3 version, but I'd have to consider the PC version too...
Thanks for the info :)

It does look better than FFXI but not nearly as pretty as Aion.
Posted: Aug 22nd 2009 9:59AM cuteSAVAGE said
Aion seems like it has been in development forever. I thought it was released in 2006, but I'm shocked to read it still hasn't had a wide release. Always sounded like an interesting take on MMOs, might get me to play one if The Old Republic or this doesn't take hold first.
