Assassin's Creed is also coming out a week after COD MW2. Most people will have the 6 hour campaign in COD beat by then.

I don't think AC2 will sell as well as AC did, simply because people don't like playing the same level over and over and over again. I didn't even beat AC because I got so bored doing the exact same thing every 15 minutes. Jump around on the roof. Jump down. Do the same three side missions for a while. Assassinate a guy with the same technique every time. Go back. Jump around on the roof. You get the idea.

tmac, you don't represent everyone else. i personally only care about multiplayer. i know there are others like me, i know others who alternate between single and multi, and i know some, like you, who only play single player. aggie is right, a lot of people would buy a MP-only COD. the story (even though it's awesome) isn't exactly bioshock you know.

It doesn't have a good story, but it's fun as hell to play through even if it was short. There's more than enough games to play deathmatch in all the time, and besides they're just going to recycle 99% of MW1's online.

Again, single player comes first. All the time, no matter what, no exceptions.

The day people start focusing on online only is the day this industry stagnates and dies. There's only so many games people can farm deathmatches in before even they realize they've been doing the same thing endlessly.

again, let me say that you don't represent everyone. if all games were single player, my gaming hobby would have started and ended with super mario 64. playing the same deathmatch over and over? each person is different, and their play style reflects that. it may be the same general concept, but no one match is the same as another. but single player has no variations (within the same difficulty level). same AI, same setpieces, everything.

tl;dr version: your argument against multiplayer also applies to single player.

@tmac

I agree with you that singleplayer is important. Single-player only games like Bioshock, Half-Life 2, and Shadow Complex are the games that keep me amazed at video games, but really, the COD series has never had a very strong campaign, and most people buy it just for the multiplayer. I don't think there's anything wrong with them focusing on creating a fantastic multiplayer experiance and leaving single player, which they're just not as good at, on the sidelines. There are other fantastic developers that are better at making a single player experiance, Infinity Ward can keep wowing me with their fantastic online play.

I represent the health of the industry on this one. We'll be going down a very very bad path if too many multi only games pop up. It'll dilute the industry just as much or more than the mass of casual shovelware games we're getting now.

so i take it that you don't have a response for my argument that your complaint about multiplayer also applies to single player, possibly even more so?

and to reply to what you said, of course multiplayer only games will ruin the industry. that's why there will always be single player. but to say that single player should always be the focus is stupid. multiplayer in shooters is just as valuable as the single player. do you think COD4 would have had such lasting sales if it was single player only? of course, there are some exceptions that pop up - bioshock comes to mind, but that's one of the few shooters that relies heavily on story.

Single player should be the focus always, because there's no value in multiplayer. How hard is it to slap some maps together, make it so people don't spawn into enemies, and make a lobby so they can shit talk and be racists before matches?

Single player's where you get all of the classic games of all time, because of the story or characters or gameplay. You don't see multiplayer shooters near the very top, and for very good reason...because you just run around killing people. There's no value in that.

alright tmac, you have 1 year to make a decent multiplayer shooter. let's see how hard it really is.

"You don't see multiplayer shooters near the very top, and for very good reason...because you just run around killing people. There's no value in that."

really? we've never seen halo at the top? we've never seen COD at the top? we've never seen gears of war at the top? REALLY?

and running around killing people? that's what you do in single player too. do you know what the difference is? in single player, you have a light story tying together all the maps, and you have stupider enemies. in multiplayer, you pretty much just lose the story, and play real people, who make real thoughts, and in some cases, work together as a team.

next response please.

I've never seen halo anywhere near the top 10 on just about every list i can think of. I've also never played any kind of multiplayer game where anyone even tried to use the slightest ounce of teamwork. I'd argue the enemies on veteran were tougher than most real people I ever went up against, and I'm by far not the best player out there online.

There's no value at all to mindlessly running around and killing people. It's the bare minimum of playing a video game. and requires no thought or skill to win.

to be fair, true shooters rarely make top 10 video game lists of all times. and they don't know what a truly great game is? you do know that how much you like a game is an OPINION right? like i've said in this thread a bunch of times, YOU DON'T REPRESENT ANYONE EXCEPT FOR YOURSELF. i like LBP. i thought it was easily worth $60. you didn't. did i say your opinion is automatically invalid from now on? or how i didn't like fallout 3 that much. did i go around saying it's crap? no, i didn't. i understand how people liked it, but it just didn't appeal to me. it's cool to think what you think, as long as you don't think you're the voice of the universe.

@tmac: Every week or so, Major Nelson posts a few different top ten lists for Xbox Live: heres the one from Aug. 10

Xbox 360 Top LIVE Titles (based on Unique Users)
1 Call of Duty: WaW
2 Halo 3
3 Call of Duty 4
4 Gears of War 2
5 GTA IV
6 1 vs 100
7 FIFA 09
8 Trials HD
9 Battlefield 1943
10 Madden NFL 10

The first 4... are multiplayer shooters with single player and in total half the list is multiplayer based. Interesting to note, is that he also posts the top ten for Original Xbox games, heres the one from the same week:

Original Xbox Top Live Titles (based on UU’s)
1 Halo 2
2 Star Wars: Battlfrnt 2
3 Counter-Strike
4 Fable
5 Splinter Cell Chaos
6 Conker: Live Reloaded
7 Doom 3
8 Star Wars: Battlefront
9 SW: Republic Commando
10 Call of Duty 3

Halo 2 has retained the number one position, each time the list is posted... and on this list, 9 out of the 10 games are multiplayer shooters. Yes they have single player modes too.

So if you've never seen Halo 3 or CoD4 at the top of a top ten list... now you have. And I can tell you this... Halo 3, has bounced between one and two on its list, since its release in 2007.

Highest rated doesn't have anything to do with being the best of all time, specially when games like GTA 4 and Halo 3 suffered the hype effect. Just go back and read some of those reviews and you'll see how ludicrous some of them are, like Shu's splooging of Halo 3.

You might as well have posted a list of most played racers and then told me "SEE? THEY'RE ALL RACERS!!"

Silencio's top ten bestest games of all time:
cod MW
halo 3
cod waw
blah
blah
blah
blah
blah
blah
blah

No teamwork? What? Get some friends. I love the online shooters. Saying they have no substance is pretty ignorant. Either you just had a bad time with a certain game, or you are horrible at them. I've had more fun with CoD4 multiplayer than i will ever have with most single player games. And saying they have no meaning is a really weak argument when you have only your opinion to back it up.

"There's no value at all to mindlessly running around and killing people. It's the bare minimum of playing a video game. and requires no thought or skill to win."

Opinion. This statement just makes me mad. If it requires no skill, I would love to see you go play with the MLG guys and beat ANY of them. Veteran on CoD4 isnt nearly as difficult as a well coordinated team online.

I agree with tmac. Without single player this industry would die. Single player games are where virtually all the creativity exists. And as he said, people can really only invest themselves in so many MP games. People usually pick one or two and stay with them until a better game or a sequel launches... which could be years. So without SP games not only would most of the creativity die, so would most of the cash flow.

Yea it's a little far fetched to say there's "nothing like it"

Prototype feels a LOT like Assassins Creed, as does GTA4 and Crackdown and all the others. Assassins Creed differs mostly in that it lacks guns, and takes place in the past.

Of course there are far more shooters than games of this type, but that doesn't make it one of a kind.
