totally makes sense. especially when comparing it to much smaller profile, but more visible logos/insignias like those of Wii or Xbox360. I'm glad its something that makes sense unlike some of the REALLY weird japanese commercials that were just dropped for the ps3. for a while i was thinking the new logo was some rebranding like radio shack becoming "the shack". thankfully its not going to be the 2nd time i face palm today because of sonys marketing dept.

or like pizza hut becoming "The Hut" which is quite possibly the stupidest rebranding ever. that may have possibly been a decent idea in the 90's, but definitely not now.

Or like Mtn Dew. Adding the 'n' just makes it feel like people don't know that Mt stands for.

Archigamer...

Mt. stands for Mount (for titles)
Mtn. stands for Mountain

Not that the rebranding wasn't stupid, but they weren't making up abbreviations.

A logo is not a good logo if you cannot fax it to someone and still have it retain enough information for it to be legible on a pen. The designer(s) that Sony paid hundreds of thousands of dollars should know this.

@Longhorn Slim

I did google it, and the closest I got was a post in the IGN forums from May, which to be honest, I don't trust. I was hoping someone something along the lines of what Ryan Hamilton posted

@Lunastra78

that is awesome

If that's what the PS3 looked like from start, I would have bought it at launch.

The article says the new logo is just PS3. I have not seen the new logo, but I expect it to look the same as the PS3 etched onto the top of the new models. As for what color, white or grey would be my guess.

I like the new logo actually.

The spidey font looked far too intimidating...the new one looks more friendly, and pretty much carries on the tradition of the PS2 logo.

This "new" PS3, with friendlier looking hardware, a friendlier logo and better looking box art is pretty much what the PS3 should have been in November 2006.

Maybe it's a bit late now though.

its more of a re-branding, the PS2 offered tons of games while being cheap, the PS3 is looking to do the same,

It isn't too late, but this generation is getting on in years, and I don't think they'll make up the gulf between the sales of the PS3 and the sales of the 360 by the time the next gen consoles start to roll out. Having said that, after three years, there is finally a PS3 priced into the mainstream market, and the numbers should definitely improve.

Actually Microsoft spells it as "Xbox" in press releases. But you're right about the Live part, they always spell that in caps.

i can understand from an advertising point the neccessity of having the shorter logo to create a bigger image... however, i personally cannot stand the new PS3 logo and much prefer the full name spelled out, and if people have to whine about CAPS then perhaps that should stop peeing in their own cheerios.

Now before all the "old" playstation 3s are sold out, I should go buy me a back up/spare for the bedroom so i don't have to get one of them ugly new ps3 slims. Actually, I might have to hit up ebay again to buy another old 20gb system so i have hardware backwards compatibility.

See, they always ruin the good things! Only good thing about the ps3 slim to me is it takes less power. otherwise there's nothing I like about it.

If you think about it, most people tend to call it the PS3 instead of the Playstation 3, much like the way we refer to the Playstation 1 & Playstation 2 as PS1 + PS2 respectively. It makes sense, I guess. I just wish they would use the font that was used on the top of the PS2. The current PS logo font looks kinda wierd to me.

That makes sense. It looks nice but I dislike the jarring lady robot voice that screams "PLAYSTATION" at me at the end of ads/trailers.

Anyone else think the same? Or am I going to fade away and die a dangerously short downvoted death,

Kaz Hirai explained the meaning behind the change to Times Online. The new logo represents a "reset" of sorts. Hirai explains that he wanted it to represent "going back to our roots."

A lot of mistakes this console cycle. A lot. At least they're figuring most of them out before the next cycle comes around.

yeah, all three made some bad mistakes. MS with faulty hardware, sony with a number of things that have mostly been sorted out by now, and nintendo... well, the wii has a number of major mistakes that can't be fixed this gen.

for round 2, i definitely see MS focusing a lot on making sure the hardware is top notch and adding even more social networking features to live. sony probably won't make too many hardware changes. i see it as a sort of gamecube-to-wii jump. and then nintendo will probably just revamp everything. i have a feeling the next nintendo console is going to be great for gamers like us, and casuals alike, assuming nintendo has learned from their mistakes and knows what to do to fix them.

The Wii didn't make any mistakes this generation. It has turned into a money printer for Nintendo and caters to their core audience: little kids. Nintendo has always catered to that audience because it is _very_ lucrative, if your price point is right.

Nintendo didn't see any value in the 18-26 set, or older people, because they buy less stuff. They are also much more discriminating about the quality of the titles they buy. Nintendo simply can't compete with AAA games like Uncharted 2 and Gears of War 2. The good thing is, with their business model, they don't have to.

Vote me to oblivion if you will but I think the way they do (and always have done) business is pretty damn obvious.

@useedems:

What?? that's crazy. Nintendo's core audience as you call it isn't little kids but nintendo fans. They buy their games for the actual game and characters, they don't buy stuff that doesn't feel nintendo. The kept them profitable before the wii came out, they it just blew everything away.

Cooking Mama feels Nintendo, Batallion Wars doesn't feel Nintendo. Even LIttle big Planet would have sold millions on the Wii, Viva PiƱata would have sold millions on the Wii. Shadow of Colossus would have been on the top ten had it been created for a Nintendo hardware. It sold pretty bad, because it's too weird for juvenile gamers, yet old school gamers like most bloggers love it to this day.There's not a Nintendo exclusive crowd as you can see with Monster Hunter, a Pokemon clone and sells millions the Playstation crowd, even if they hate Pokemon for being a Nintendo game. .And they are AAA titles, you assume everyone likes the same thing, even pc gamers hate playing the same games on the consoles, they just feel more comfortable on their trusted machines, THE SAME GAME.

Halo would have sold as good as the conduict, the only FPS Nintendo gamers would play is something made by Nintendo, or something on pc, where FPS excel. Tony Hawk games always sell like shit on Nintendo consoles, but look at SSX and they sell hundreds of thousands easily and easy sell better than the other consoles, why? because they have a zany Nintendo thing going.

Too sum it up, Nintendo isn't just for kids, most of the Nintendo fans seems to carry big money as tons of gamers become multimillion sellers, so it means probably a ton of old atari/NES owners continue to buy nintendo, and if you add all the kids and parents buying, new casual gamers buying it just for the bowling game and the exercise games, and all the publicity surrounding Nintendo, you see their market. Why do you think third parties want a cut of the action, even if they will sell like shit compared to Nintendo and a few big companies?

Sony may just end up with less Real Estate, I mean look at the example provided, the PS logo and PLAYSTATION 3 take up the middle and right, where XBOX 360 takes up the left.... now it will be left and right and XBOX may have more space.

So it's like the PS2/PSP logos, but curvy. You know, I don't really understand why they ever changed it in the first place. People recognize the "PS" logo. Oh, well...

Oh, btw, off topic, but this Xbox PR Video totally took LittleBigPlanet's theme, like what the hell?
