GTA: Chinatown Wars runs over PSP and PSN on October 20th
The upcoming PSP port of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will be available -- in both UMD and PSP Go-friendly downloadable formats -- on October 20th. Rockstar Games still hasn't shown what kind of enhancements will be made to the one-time DS game, nor have they released any screenshots of the game in action. We understand Rockstar's penchant for secrecy, but considering this is one of the few titles Take-Two has planned for the holiday season, we recommend they get the hype-wagon (pictured above) revved up soon.

Not a fan of that top down GTA, but I'd like a demo just to try it anyway. I'd rather not have to temporarily pirate it if there's no demo.
Archon (PSN: Archonik, XBL: DarkARHN) @ Aug 25th 2009 6:12PM
A huge fan of that top down GTA style, can't wait to try a demo anyway. I'd rather not have to temporarily pirate if there's no demo. :/
eNrique @ Aug 25th 2009 6:47PM
Why not just rent it instead of "temporarily pirate"?
tmacairjordan87 @ Aug 25th 2009 6:48PM
Because renting costs money too, and I don't pay for demos.
Magnum @ Aug 25th 2009 7:18PM
i dont go on the comments often. but when i do, you are always like "oh i can't pay for this, blah blah blah, i abuse gamestops return policy, why would i pay for stuff wah waa waa waa" Don't play games if you dont have money! cry me a river
tmacairjordan87 @ Aug 25th 2009 7:21PM
You must have uncanny luck then, cause I haven't done that more than a small handful of times. You should play the lottery.
Roto13 @ Aug 25th 2009 10:05PM
It's been years since I've seen a handheld game for rent.
Sora @ Aug 25th 2009 6:07PM
Well, at least it's a LITTLE before the holiday storm of games...
tmacairjordan87 @ Aug 25th 2009 6:14PM
What holiday storm? :P
Sora @ Aug 25th 2009 6:15PM
Whoops, forgot about the delays for a minute there.
Sly [Planeteer | Power of Teets & Crumpets] @ Aug 25th 2009 6:20PM
yeah, now it's pretty much:
Modern Warfare 2
Assassin's Creed 2
Uncharted 2
R&C F:A Crack in Time
(games from november to the end of the year)
Leo161 @ Aug 25th 2009 6:31PM
Um, Bioshock 2?
tmacairjordan87 @ Aug 25th 2009 6:33PM
neeeeext year.
Traceur_Ryuk (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Aug 25th 2009 6:38PM
Well, there's a bunch of PSP games coming out and we have... (Yes, a list, leave me alone)
About 100 guitar hero games
DJ hero
Eyepet
FIFA 10
Gran Turismo 5 (Possibly)
Katamari forever
Left 4 dead 2
Ninja Gaiden sigma II
Halo ODST
Ok, sure some of them come out a little earlier than the "holiday storm" But it's still something isn't it? And without tons of games this year it leaves me some time to catch up on some games I missed out on.
Sly [Planeteer | Power of Teets & Crumpets] @ Aug 25th 2009 6:41PM
yeah, like tmac said, bioshock 2 was one of the games that got delayed.
and holiday storm typically means november and december. not any earlier than that.
Mr Khan @ Aug 25th 2009 7:05PM
And NSMBWii, LBPSP, Zelda: Spirit Tracks, Borderlands, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Forza 3, and a few others i can't think of.
tmacairjordan87 @ Aug 25th 2009 7:09PM
We're talking about good games, not a port of a ds game.
Although borderlands may be worth mentioning, too early for me to know yet.
Sly [Planeteer | Power of Teets & Crumpets] @ Aug 25th 2009 7:29PM
oh yeah, forgot about borderlands and zelda. thanks khan.
sony boy @ Aug 25th 2009 6:30PM
isn't this like a downgrade without the touch screen mini games(even if i'm not a fan of them)
tmacairjordan87 @ Aug 25th 2009 6:35PM
Well, it depends. First of all, everything's better without minigames. Second of all, I think I remember hearing they're using the vice city stories engine, so if they change it to make it like the first 2 psp GTAs, then we're looking at an extreme upgrade over the DS version.
That top down view is just....bleh.
Fun DMC @ Aug 25th 2009 7:28PM
You won't be saying that once you've gotten your hands on the game - it works amazingly well, and this is coming from someone who doesn't particularly enjoy top down GTA games either.
Extinction @ Aug 25th 2009 8:54PM
GTA:DS - minigames + larger screensize + TV out + better graphics + CD quality audio + voice + analog nub = massive upgrade
Saigon @ Aug 26th 2009 1:40PM
The loss of touchscreen controls is definitely a downgrade. I never got tired a hot-wiring cars btw, But the psp version will make up for that with it's upgrades, assuming they'll add better graphics, smoother framerate, decent/alot more music and hopefully alot more VO work.
shalter24 @ Aug 25th 2009 6:34PM
Here's hoping they added voice-overs... Silent mission briefings just wouldn't feel right to me.
fred @ Aug 25th 2009 6:47PM
nah i will pass on this one, i havent turn on my psp since june 08 i think
sony boy @ Aug 25th 2009 7:19PM
dissidia and gt psp are going to make me turn on my psp.
Markez @ Aug 25th 2009 8:11PM
I felt the same way before buying it, which I only did so because the store was out of the other DS games I actually wanted to purchase at the time.
That'd be sweet if the PSP got voice-overs, but speaking from experience the silent text actually doesn't detract from the experience at all, imo. It's a shockingly fun and excellent game, and I can't believe how much I'm enjoying it. Will be a nice treat for the PSP folks when you get a chance to play it.
willxcore @ Aug 25th 2009 6:46PM
Sold my barely played DS copy as soon as I heard about this. Can't wait. I really hope they have voice acting, better songs and better graphics. The controls will be much better even without touch interface.
Mr Khan @ Aug 25th 2009 7:10PM
The reaction to this game's announcement shows exactly what hurt the DS version's chances. People don't want different in their GTA outings.
Crazy-008 @ Aug 26th 2009 2:48PM
Personally I think that the top down display is a downgrade of sorts from what we are used to. I feel like the only reason GTA started as top down was because of the graphic/ rendering capabilities that existed during the time. I think it is great that some people who still enjoy the topdown are excited about it, but it is not something that has me going crazy over it. More than likely it will be a direct port anyway...
Mark @ Aug 25th 2009 7:31PM
My patient just completed some voice acting for a GTA game. She signed a nondisclosure agreement so I cant get much out of her. Hopefully it is for this.
Kdiggy @ Aug 25th 2009 8:16PM
GTA must have been running pretty fast, because that was quick. Seems like it only took a few months to port.
Poisoned Al @ Aug 25th 2009 8:17PM
I wonder if there's candy in that van...
nullset @ Aug 25th 2009 8:35PM
Don't think so, but what if there's CHOKOLAT POODING in there...
Whoa, had a trip there, sorry...
uncle jesse @ Aug 26th 2009 4:47PM
Sure there's candy in the van, little boy. I'm a friend of your mom's. Just hop inside and I'll drive you to get a brand new bike!
Zoidberg! @ Aug 25th 2009 8:42PM
This is the type of game that I would definitely download, instead of on UMD.
Plastic Rat @ Aug 25th 2009 10:22PM
Just wondering, why do you prefer a digital download over a UMD?
Zoidberg! @ Aug 26th 2009 6:14PM
I don't normally prefer it. This just seems like the kind of game that I would rather download.
Ant @ Aug 25th 2009 9:18PM
I got the October issue of Playstation Magazine, and there's an image of it from a PSP ad. It's exactly that from the DS version, but the graphics do look a LOT sharper.
carterk88 @ Aug 25th 2009 9:34PM
Damn I read the headline & thought sweet this is going on my PS3's hdd for sure!!!! But sadly I don't have a PSP so now I'm back to where I was before I read the article : (
Miguel @ Aug 26th 2009 7:44AM
That's what I thought too. I understand why Sony won't put PSP games playable on the PS3 but I wish they would make an exception here.
Plastic Rat @ Aug 25th 2009 10:22PM
Hype or no hype, I'm buying this sucker. Love the topdown GTA style.
I've got it paid and pre-ordered already. If it takes a few days to get to me I'll just play a pirated copy till I have it.
So glad this thing is coming to PSP.
Frank @ Aug 25th 2009 11:05PM
Ah, forgot about this amidst the GTPSP release. Maybe they'll be replacing the Stylus games with button/nub based Quick Time Events?
TM @ Aug 26th 2009 12:25AM
one question: was the map in GTA:CW larger than in LCS or VCS?
Joe H @ Aug 26th 2009 12:58AM
The problem wasn't that it's a DS game, it's that it isn't all that good.
Plastic Rat @ Aug 26th 2009 2:11AM
Actually I played it on DS and it was great. The problem wasn't with the game, it was the fact that it was on a platform that's not really used by the demographic the game is aimed at.
I also originally didn't buy it on DS because I'm tired of silly, gimmicky blowing into the mic, touchscreeny minigames on the DS.
If it's got the same top-down gameplay minus the gimmicky DS bullshit, I think it will be quite popular.
Deaddy @ Aug 26th 2009 2:49AM
Cool that it will be on the PS Store. I won't buy any more UMDs, I don't plan to get a Go but I just prefer to run my games off a memory stick than juggle discs. Faster load times, too.
junia @ Nov 19th 2009 7:55AM
Enjoy it.
