Gamersyde told Beyond Good and Evil 2 is 'on hold' - Ubisoft won't comment
Bad news for you Jade and Uncle Pey'J fans out there: Gamersyde was apparently told last week at GamesCom that Beyond Good and Evil 2 is currently in the freezer with no thaw date. Staff writer Colin Solal Cardo tweeted that he received "confirmation" from Ubisoft that the title was "on hold for now." Joystiq's attempts to receive comment from Ubisoft have been met by either silence or a statement that the company will not comment on "rumors and speculation." Well, if no one at Ubisoft told Mr. Cardo that the game was "on hold for now" then why not say as much?
Ubisoft's noncommittal aloofness doesn't end there: a couple months ago the company's North American president didn't seem to recognize a sequel was in production; Ubisoft has yet to simply confirm active production of the game it chose to close out its Ubidays 2008 event with. So, Ubisoft gets fans riled up and now won't even offer a simple update on the status of the game's development. Classy!

Cody @ Aug 26th 2009 10:04AM
Not surprising.
The first one didn't sell well and the production and development costs associated with the HD consoles is so high, why bother?
And duh all their resources are backing the uber awesome Natal killer camera sweetness!!!
Storm Eagle [Resident Capcom Megafan] @ Aug 26th 2009 10:08AM
@Cody - Did you play the first one? Sure, it didn't sell well, but it certainly warrants a sequel. It was one of the most overlooked games of last gen. Secondly, what does Ubi have to do with Natal? I'm sure they're looking into it, but I highly doubt that they're putting ALL their resources into it...It would make more sense that they're focusing on Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, and Rainbow. Not to mention they have ACII, Rabbids Go Home and TMNT Smash Up on the horizon.

It's too early for me to whip up a witty comment so I'll take the lax route...
...This isn't much of a surprise. I think BGE2 is going to go episodic and be released via XBL/PSN. No particular reason why but as far as distribution goes, it would be cheaper for Ubisoft to take another gamble on this franchise. BGE was brilliant and I hope we do see BGE2 in the next year.
Cody @ Aug 26th 2009 11:50AM
Storm,
Maybe its the fact that you saw my name and then decided to put your hater goggles on to read my comment, but I was being BEYOND sarcastic regarding the laughable camera Ubisoft is developing for that Wii workout game.
And no where did I say BGE wasn't a good game. Yes I played the first. Great game. Didn't sell well. Kind of like Okami.
That guy in the other thread was right, you are tense today! Sheesh!
Shagittarius @ Aug 26th 2009 12:03PM
The first one was not a good game contrary to popular opinion, it was a cobbled together mess of a concept. Never understood the fascination with it, was hoping they would get it right with a sequel but it doesn't bother me if it never appears.

I saw that one coming a mile away. Beyond Good and Evil 2 is too awesome for existence.
Special Agent Steve @ Aug 26th 2009 7:23PM
It's beyond Good... so it's too good.
And it's beyond Evil so that it's so far away from evil Ubisoft has to do something evil about it.
OMG video game title makes sense!!!
And I was looking forward to this.

Well, at least they're supposedly making an Okami sequel still, proving that while some dreams do die, others CAN come true!
I can't say I was terribly hyped for the sequel to BG&E, so it's no huge heartbreak for me, to be honest. I enjoyed the original, but always thought it was a little over praised. Still sucks for everyone who was anticipating it, though.
cuteSAVAGE @ Aug 26th 2009 11:49AM
An Okami sequel sounds more like a nightmare. Unless somehow Capcom made nice with Platinum and Kamiya-san is at the helm of the game, I will be very sad if this rumor is true. The game was too beautiful to have anyone but the artists who lovingly crafted the original work on a sequel.
DBuck_Eye @ Aug 26th 2009 10:05AM

So the "broken down car abandoned at the side of the road" trailer was a metaphor.
Frito @ Aug 26th 2009 10:54AM
They are too busy on producing "Prince of Persia and the endless sequels"
Mr Khan @ Aug 26th 2009 10:56AM
Ancel's team is working on Rabbids Go Home, and Ubisoft wants to put emphasis on that.
Either that, or BG&E2 was canned. Those are the only possibilities i can think of.
Cody @ Aug 26th 2009 2:29PM
You're right Khan, I remember reading that in an interview with him a while back on... I want to say IGN.
Sean Broderick @ Aug 26th 2009 11:04AM
Damn it Ubisoft. Why do you get our hopes up with a damn trailer that you don't intend to stand behind.
XLM @ Aug 26th 2009 11:08AM
MAMANOooo!
Jerk Face @ Aug 26th 2009 11:31AM
Alexander, you can tell you are a huge BG&E fan, because the whole tone of this article is so butt-hurt! Not that I'm not just as upset; just sayin'! : )
RavenLord @ Aug 26th 2009 11:45AM
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
Nook @ Aug 26th 2009 11:50AM
Well, I'm not really suprised and this is what I think Ubi is thinking:
The first, while highly praised amoung the gaming community sold poorly - they might figure they have too much else on the go and might want to save this for when times are tough, cos they might just figure any sequel will sell just as poorly with only the core crowd wanting it.
They're saving bells I'm guessing.
I thought the first was great - and everytime I see the name come up I lament trading my copy in.
cuteSAVAGE @ Aug 26th 2009 11:57AM
I really hope this isn't true. There aren't enough games coming out I'm interested in anymore, everything seems to be drying up. I was hoping BG&E2 would be the perfect pickle in my Crack in Time / Last Guardian sammich, but I realize I'm still holding out for even the slightest trickle of information on the game... I'm dying to play something with some character!
Maybe we'll get HL2 Episode Three next year in its stead, that might brighten things up a bit.
Courtney @ Aug 26th 2009 11:58AM
NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!

Dammit!
Sunborn @ Aug 26th 2009 2:19PM
This is not surpriseing. Ubisoft doesnt care about how fans of their games feel. They have horrible customer service skills. They seem to just want to go off on their own tangent reguardless of what we think. Just look at how many Assigins Creed games they've put out since the first rather lackluster one. No one asked for a sequal and a bunch of side stories for portable systems, and considering how bad the sales of the first one was it really didnt make sense to do them, but they did, becuase thats what they want to do. They never wanted to do another Beyond Good and Evil game, dont be suprised if it never gets done, ever.
