I'm surprised how much wasted space there still is in the Slim. The logic board looks very very sparse, yet it still takes up a huge area. The custom blu-ray drive looks huge, but clearly laptop manufacturers (Sony included) have been working with slim form factor BD-ROM drives for years now.

Maybe there are heat concerns or whatever... but it looks like they sort of went half way in miniaturizing this thing.

I think that was evident when they did the unboxing. This isn't a very impressive miniaturization at all, as it pertains to size anyway - maybe in weight?

It's more about price reduction - a smaller BD drive would've no doubt cost more. Any extra space is probably airflow-related.

I heard/read from various reviews that the whole slim product looks/feels rather cheap in quality.

I wonder if it's a cheaper material / cheaper cost kinda thing or just biased opinons..

Anyone own a slim yet who can verify the quality?

Yeap.

Same as a computer, when you are building one you've to take into consideration the space between components to make sure you will have a proper ventilation and a good airflow.

Of course the PS3 is not that Slim but then again SONY didn't call it Slim, that was the press and the gamers.

That was pretty cool. I love seeing the insides of consoles. Always wished I could learn how mod and do all that fun stuff. (I had bad hockey temper in the 80's-90's and often got to look in and repair many a controller)

I heart iFixIt. They help me tear apart my Macs when I need to do something crazy to them. My personal favorite teardown was the banana.

Its a pretty cool bit of engineering, especially the cooling and the way they have taken care of the wiring. Sony definitely have the engineering side of things nailed down. Actually, the software side as well, going by KZ2 and Uncharted 2's engines

@Mystile

I think he's just saying that the title of the article led him to believe there was a hardware problem.

I can finally breathe easy, knowing that the PSU really will accept 110-240 volts.
