I may be missing something here, but couldn't the person returning the PS3 Fat just go in, get their free game, and go trade in the PS3 at a different (non-Best Buy) store? I see on the pic above that they scan the 80 GB and 'return and resell' it. Does that mean it can't be re-returned? Sorry, it just doesn't seem very clear here.

This program applies to people who just purchased a PS3 7 day prior (or what ever the return policy limit is) and now want to return it as an exchange for the slim which is the same price. You can't return something you bought at best buy to any other store, and even then you have to have the receipt.

No, because they wouldn't have a receipt for the other store.

What you *might* be able to do is go back to the Best Buy you got the console from, say you want to swap the Phat for the Slim, but accept Killzone 2 instead.

Then take your store (and your receipt) to a different Best Buy, and tell them that you want to swap your Phat for the Slim, but accept inFamous instead.

Rinse and repeat as many times as you like - unwanted and additional copies of games could always be sold online.

Of course, I wouldn't be shocked if they took the original receipt from you, and gave you a new one (showing you'd already accepted a game instead), making the whole thing impossible. But still, it's nice to fantasise about breaking the system...

Actually, that's not going to work. The first BB you go to you will do the exchange. They will take your receipt, "return" the PS3, and then you rebuy, with the SKU on the new receipt for the game, as well as that trigger SKU 6867866. Now you have a new receipt, and the original has been "closed out" so to speak and no longer valid. Attempting to bring the new receipt to another store won't work as you already have used the trigger SKU. It's clearly on your receipt.

This is for people that bought at fat PS3 before the price drop. Best Buy doesn't want them to return their system because they lose the money from that sale. So, to entice them to keep their more expensive PS3 they offer a game as compensation. I would imagine if you did get the game and still tried to return your more expensive PS3 they would give you the difference in cost less the retail cost of the game you chose. That way people couldn't just get a free game and a $100 discount on a new system.

I just bought a PS3 when the price cut was announced, fully aware of the coming slim model, but I much prefer the look of the old big bertha.

So, If i go to Best Buy and pretend that I want to trade in my PS3, I can get Infamous for free?

Hopefully they won't check that I'm just holding an empty box......

Yes, you can. You're covered under the 30-day price match guarantee and return policy. Simply bring in your receipt (system is not required), and you'll get the free game. Use the online store availability to ensure the game you want is there.

I did the same. I got 3 games with my 160GB PS3 for $399.99, which strikes me as a better deal than $299 for a 120GB PS3 Slim with no games. I didn't buy it at Best Buy, though.

I did much the same. I don't have a lot of faith in the first run of Sony hardware. There were issues with the first run of the PS2 Slim hardware, and finding a functional early model of either of the fat PS2 or the original PS1 is difficult (although not impossible, as I do have a working original model fat).

So, I ran out and got an 80GB. And after the fact, I found out that Linux won't work on the new Slim, which makes my purchase seem more astute. For me, that makes a difference, despite its limitations while running in a hypervisor.

I'm a little concerned about hard drive space, though. So many games seem to have mandatory installs. But that being said, the ability to throw in any old SATA 2.5" hard drive should mitigate that. I might add something around 500GB or so down the road.

Anyway, I've finally joined the PS3 party, after having been in the party for the Wii and 360 for years now. Time to track down some of those cool exclusives on the PS3. Already snagged Ratchet & Clank, MGS4, and Infamous.

@Sarge:

Same here. I've had both my Wii and 360 since each of their respective launches. I also game on my pc, too.

The first (and only) game I bought with my new PS3 was Resistance. Unfortunately, I'm not into it - disappointing, to say the least. But Infamous and R&C are both on the list and I've actually tried those ones, so I know they are good.

You not only get Infamous but you also get the $100 in difference between the cost of when you bought it and where it's priced now.

Great deal for anyone.

I bought a PS3 slim yesterday, it was a very fortuitous occurrence. I just happened to be in the store because my brother was buying the new Final Fantasy Game for the PSP. While there a guy I know told me they were selling the PS3 Slim earlier then expected, and since I had some money on me (Birthday, yay!) I managed to get one of the last three they had.

Going to pick up a Slim tonight; selling the fatty to a friend this weekend. As much as I love all the extra *ish* on the fat model, I hardly ever use any of it. I watch movies/play games/browse the web on my PS3, and that's about it. Anyone else picking one up this week?

I have a small living room; my entertainment center is basically a finished wood table with a glass plate between the top and bottom levels...this would free up enough space to fit the 360/PS3 in the same space (glass plate). Also, less power consumption is a good thing for me since rates are rising quarterly and my PS3 gets more play time than my 360. I guess you could say it's one half "OMG New Toy!" and one half Common Sense. After selling my fatty I'll really only be paying an extra $50 towards the Slim, so to me it's a good long-term investment.

Forgot to add that at the moment my 360 sits on the top level with my TV, with almost a 3rd of it hanging over the edge. I'm too paranoid to stand the 360 upright because I have pets and they'd knock that shit over in a heartbeat.

That's pretty sweet. Best Buy certainly doesn't want old models on the floor taking up space. It would be nice to find an old model discounted somewhere though just because they want to get rid of it....

I bought my PS3 two days after I heard the slim was coming out. Reason, Linux support and finally a lower price. It was actually worrisome to see if the stores still had PS 3 L laying around.

I went to my local Best Buy in Midwest City, Oklahoma yesterday to pick up Batman. At the door they had a table with a stack of PS3 Slims and Batman on PS3. I wasn't expecting to see the slims on shelves this quickly.

On another note while the table had a stack of Batman on PS3 the 360 version was no where to be found. I went back to the game section to find it wasn't with the other 360 games either. I caught the attention of a blue shirt and he had no clue where the 360 version was at. He went to the media storage area in the back and couldn't find it there either. He went and asked a couple of more people and found out that all the 360 copies of the game was locked in a cabinet by the cashier area. While I was there two or three people came by looking for the game and left without it because they assumed they were out or didn't carry it.

I regularly buy my games from Best Buy and I've never seen them put a game out of sight like that. My guess is they are trying to use Batman to drive some extra PS3 sales.

On a side note - I canceled my Batman preorder for the 360 and got it for my new PS3 Slim, but it seems to me having played the demo on the 360 and the full one on the PS3, it looks much better on the 360. Is this pretty much the case for all non-exclusive games? Anyone done a side-by-side?

it's a tad sharper on the 360 but I'd still go for the PS3 version for the Joker challenges. I originally thought it was just going to be tacked on but his fighting style is pretty cool....jumping and standing on the person's chest kicking them in the face.
