You hit the nail on the head.

It can look great but the most important part is how it tastes.

A few tips for the novice cake maker. Substitute milk for a recipe that calls for water and applesauce for a recipe that calls for oil, shortening or butter. You won't taste the applesauce and it will keep the cake moist longer. As far as the milk goes: do you think hot chocolate would taste better with milk or water? I rest my case on that one. In terms of the applesauce ... just replace is 1:1 as you would the oil. If it's 1/4 cup oil then it's 1/4 cup of applesauce ... easy.

^ This.

Unfortunately, I can't bake very well. But I'm quite good at savory dishes, especially sushi.

@johnnynumber5 Yes! Replace the fat with applesauce! (This phrase was the impetus for some really convoluted stupid late night jokes that are only funny late at night between my college roomies and I. Ah...good times!)
