My head hurst when I am told the new price of the arcade is $199.99? Am I the only one who recalls the arcade previously being priced at $179.99 as its standard price? Hmm. After reading this interview, I feel that Microsoft is pretty weak this holiday seaon and I've always been a big xbox 360 fan.

Alan Greenberg is starting to sound like a fanboy. If he's really an industry professional representing the xbox 360, all he knows about the competition's lineup is "I think they have uncharted", he really needs to do some research. Theres more than just 1 exclusive for the PS3 this year. The xbox 360's line up was not all that great in the way he described it either.

He did try his best to put on a positive spin but basically its a 'A Shooter thats almost just a dlc-addon for additional coop, another dlc for gtaiv and a car-racing game'. *crickets sound*

I'm not really into racing games that much so reall a holiday-season thats two dlcs is rather lame. I know Halo 3: OSDT is not a dlc, but, it feels like it could have been a dlc. More levels based around co-op only!

@Wes: Of course Greenberg knows the PS3 has more than just Uncharted as an exclusive. He's just using "PR speak." The whole interview is done that way. He avoids answering all the negative questions by steering them into the positive things the xbox has. It's standard PR.
Look at the question Chris asks about lowering the cost of hard drives. Greenburg never answers it. He goes off on the new things that don't require a hard drive (ignoring Chris's comment about xbla games that can't be played on an arcade sku), then segues into how the elite has a 120 GB drive and that the price has been lowered.
Here's my favorite part of that section:
"We obviously have taken a different approach doing that then perhaps what our competition's done, but we think it served us pretty well and, you know, if you look at the sales results I think they reflect that."
Translation: "We're making a ton off money off of our overpriced hard drives, so we're not gonna change now!"

Not to be fanboyish, but I just took a look at the lineup for the rest of the year and I didn't really see much beyond Uncharted that really looked to be a must buy. That is assuming that Gran Turismo 5 doesn't make it out this year. I honestly think that it's going to be the now respectable backlog of games that the PS3 has that's going to really move systems.

In my opinion neither system has a very strong holiday lineup, but we'll see...

There have been rumors of GT5 coming out in Q4, so that's another AAA title.
And considering Killzone 2 and Infamous have already come out this year and 360 has had pretty much nothing on the AAA front that I can recall, it's pretty odd stuff?

He was always going to be biased though...

sigh.. where to begin...you're comment is so painful to read that I'm going to break it down and correct you where you're wrong.
First off where did you get the idea that the arcade is or ever was priced at 179?... I bought mine several months ago(in Canada) and it was 199. 199 is the price its been for a while now, and its never been lower( unless a retailer decided to put it on sale)
Now calling out Allan about his proffesionalism is quite ridiculous. He's here( as the title says) to talk about all things xbox, so you really should be looking elsewhere for an accurate PS3 holiday launch lineup. Also you're comment "all he knows about the competition is: ... " is just plain ridiculous, and illustrates how you couldn't have read what he said very carefully. He's not aware of any other "Triple A Exclusives" i.e. Uncharted is the only game he considers a Triple A Exclusive. How you read that and came up with what you said baffles me.

I'm sorry I didnt realise YOU PERSONALLY didnt like racing games... therefore, one of the biggest racing games to come out... ever is completely ignored in you're calculation of what a "good holiday lineup" is.

"More gta dlc": I guess you didnt enjoy Lost & the Damned's many hours of added gameplay, but many people did. Its a big deal as its exclusive content for one of the highest selling games this gen...for one of the biggest gaming franchises ever.

Oh wait, you made more informed comments about ODST "feeling" like DLC.. which is funny since you've never experienced it. Name any other game that has released DLC with a new hud, upgraded engine, and drastically different game play (ie open world, flashbacks etc)... maybe you're the one who needs to do some research.

So they drop the price of the Elite to 300$.
And the 120 gig hardrive by itself is 150$.
And there is no plan to lower the price of the hard drive by itself.
It's like your buying a hard drive that comes with an xbox.

@Not THAT Matt: A WiFi connection between your console and your router isn't going to add any noticeable latency to your Halo match. Doing some quick tests, I get an average of 0.493 ms over my wired LAN, and 1.513ms over wireless. Some fat squirrel sitting on your cable line outside is going to cause more problems then using the $99 360 WiFi in regards to latency.

And useless, between the wink-wink, nudge-nudge "yeah we know we're ripping you off but we don't don't care" attitude and the PR-slick answers, there was no new information in this interview and they basically say they don't feel the need to change much.

At least I can't say I am disappoint. Had to expect it with Microsoft. That's not to say I don't love my 360. BUT $100 DOLLARS FOR WIRELESS COME ON! :(

Agreed. The wink wink, we are soo good and our sales reflect that attitude got a bit annoying by the third or fourth time Aaron played that card.

No no, the arcade with no hard drive is still important and a goood deal! Really! Its a great deal because you can use our newest features like last.fm, facebook, twitter and instant-streaming should your internet connection be fast enough to stream 1080p and you want to pay us to steam it!

Microsoft really should have kept in the hmdi in the 360, ditched the arcade and replaced it with the pro. Aaron knows it too. The featureless arcade is just too much of a cash-cow for them since people end up paying MORE than the elite when all is said and done. I mean 120GB hard drive + arcade = over an elite.

Arron keeps using the term hands down, but I really think its hands up their arse or hands down in the customer's pockets stealing their wallet. The fact that facebook, twitter and last.fm are only available to Gold members is rediculous. Why should I have to pay $50.00 a year to check facebook on an xbox 360 when I can do it for free on a pc?

Boooh Microsoft. Boooh Aaron Greenberg. Too much PR spin for a lackluster holiday season with over priced hardware, slim exclusives and features most people would only be excited about if they were actually free for everyone to use and not attached to a $50 yearly membership fee.

There is no excuse for how they are gouging consumers on the WiFi and HDD accessories.

For the life of me, I can't understand why, after dropping the price of the Elite by $100, lots of people find room to complain about the removal of AV cords.

It's like would you rather them tack back on the $100 and throw back in the cords or let you pay $299 for the Elite and then go find HDMI online for $10.

I guess I'm missing something... oh well. Just my opinion, tho.

Badboy, the Elite was overpriced. By now, the only difference between the Elite and the Pro was a bigger hard drive and a fancy cable packed in.

So that's why they are not getting credit for the "$100" price cut. All they really did was take the existing Pro package, increase the HD size from more-than-you-need to a-lot-more-than-you-need and take out the composite cables.

Previously, I have been a big fan of Microsoft's "Price it lower and build as you go" strategy. I have never used a Wifi adapter or an HDMI cable with my XBox, so I don't want to pay for that when I buy the console.

But the key piece of that strategy is YOU HAVE TO PRICE IT LOWER. Now, Microsoft's Flagship SKU is the same price as the comparable PS3 SKU, $299. And you STILL have to pay extra for cables, Wifi, online play, etc.

Agreed. I never used the xbox 360 wireless adaptor either so I was reasonably happy or content with it not being included if we got to pay less. Where'd the lower pricing go? Why would we want to pay the same price for less features? Let's get the pricing back to competitive Aaron Greenberg. Its a recession. You need to convince people to buy expensive electronics.

The point about the Wi-Fi isn't whether or not you would want to use it. The point is that it should be included as standard so you have the option of using it. Think about it - The PS3 Slim is now the same price as the "Elite" except it doesn't offer the same value proposition. So, you aren't paying anything extra for it when you buy a Slim but you are required to pay extra for it if you buy a 360. Thats retarded. Also, he can tout the $199 Arcade unit but for practical purposes it's a gimped console. Even if it's $100 cheaper the cost to upgrade it with a nominal HDD, Wi-Fi, component cable and a year of Live far exceeds it's value proposition of being cheaper. Basically, it's going to cost a lot more than $100 bucks to get it up to the Elite's standard. It's like a bait and switch to be honest.

Let me give you a perfect example of what I'm talking about and how it realted to me in real world practical application. The house we own is a little older and it's not an option to run a 60 FT networking cable to play online. We are a wireless family because we have a number of devices and only one place that we had a strong enough cable signal to connect the router from our cable company. There are three other live taps in various parts of the house and none of them had adequate signal quality for internet. So, even when I had my 360 I still had to buy the Wi-Fi router because it wasn't possible or practical to use a wired connection. It's a feature that it crucial for me and our family. Our Wii has it, Our iPhone has it, Our PSP has it, Our PS3 has it, all of our computers have it (even the old netbook) and practically every other electronics device except the 360 has it as a built in feature. It's not as if the cost of building it into the console would increase the cost exponentially. In my opinion, it's a crucial and vital feature that should be included in any and every device and it practically is except for the 360.

I wish Greenberg would just tell it like it is and be honest about the omission of Wi-Fi in the 360. The reason they don't include it or sell it according to industry standard (as well as the HDD) is because they make money hand over fist by selling it seperate. Don't give me this PR Bullshit about giving the consumers choice. Choice would be including it one of your SKUs and not in the other one. Choice isn't selling it for 1/2 the price of your Arcade unit. Thats highway robbery and he shrugs it off like it's a GOOD thing.

Say what you will about Sony and Nintendo and their approach to the console business. Say what you want about your need for and the practicality of Wi-Fi instead of using a wired connection. But, don't try and say that it's a good thing it's not offered in any SKU and you damn well better not say that by adding it that the cost of the console would need to be increased exponentially.

The "elite" should be truly elite and come bundled with two additional things at the $299 price point: 1 year of Gold Live and a Wi-Fi adapter. Otherwise, it's a black arcade with a HDD. Nothing more and nothing less.

It's easy... not having HD cables in the box is a concession to Microsofts retail partners. Sony does the same thing.
Best Buy, Wal Mart, Gamestop make huge money from HD cables. It helps the retail partners becasue they make such a low profit from the consoles themselves.

Arcade is what's been carrying Microsoft for the past year, though. The widening worldwide lead over the PS3? That's due to the Arcade. The fact that they're the only console on a year-over-year gain right now? Arcade.

The Elite drop isn't going to help their sales so much as it's there to try and hurt Sony's.

I agree with Mr. Khan that having a SKU at a $199 entry point helps. The thing that we have to take into consideration is that we joystiq readers DO NOT represent the majority of gamers.

Sure most of us are techies or media buffs, but alot of people don't even have HDTVs... heck a lot of my friends that I game with don't.

Sure some of us play our consoles ritually every day, but alot of people only get a console to play 3 or 4 games they really want (like Madden, GTAIV, GT5, etc) and could care less about downloading DLC.

Sure some of us prefer WIFI (personally I like having both my PS3 and 360 "hardwired"... especially for streaming HD por..., excuse me, films). Heck alot of people have their router and entertainment center in the same rooms.

Point is... when it comes to the "playing field", price is a heavy deciding factor. Now that the PS3 is in the $299 range things should get very interesting and hopefully the competion will only benefit us as gamers.

Totally, totally agree. +1.

Yeah, guys, this is getting tough, both Sony and Microsoft have fantastic consoles. XBOX 360 has a lot of great things and bad things about its consoles. Here's a list of the good and bad of the 360.

1. Games: We all know "Halo" is a classic, and we also have "Crackdown", "Gears of War" 1 and 2, "Splinter Cell: Conviction", and "Forza", and "Perfect Dark Zero", etc. Now, those are some excellent games, but one thing XBOX is notorious for is having way too many shooters. Now, this could be said as a stereotype, because they have some other great exclusives, but on XBOX LIVE, Microsoft really glorifies all of the shooters, and make it seem as if playing shooters online with your friends is the best and only way to play online, which gets ridiculous. So be honest with yourselves, XBOX has a lot and way too many shooters. Not that shooters are a bad thing. In fact, some of the best games of all time are shooters (Halo, Bioshock). But too much of anything is bad.

2. Online Experience

Yeah, I know, playing multiplayer with your friends is easy and super fun, but what I think Microsoft really excelled in with LIVE is the atmosphere, convenience, and content. There's nothing more welcoming then turning on your XBOX and seeing the awesome visuals and themes of XBOX LIVE. The cool sound effects are also a pro. When I first installed LIVE, I was absolutely blown away by the endless amounts of content I could get. And all of this was extremely easy, until you get to the OTHER stuff, which brings me to the cons of the online experience. It's been said time and time again: Microsoft charges you for a ridiculous amount of stuff, even for the most ridiculous things. Sure, charging someone for a DLC is reasonable, but the fact that I can't get a Big Daddy helmet or a lightsaber for free is unacceptable. The costumes don't even add to a gaming experience, it's all just for fun, and yet, they charge me what, four dollars for these things? Absurd. But hey, XBOX LIVE is still an amazing experience, and for that I am thankful.

3. Hardware

The hardware for the 360 has always been accused for being cheaply-made, and I agree on a somewhat degree. My main complaint are the headphones, and it seems as if those things are made from tin foil, because after having one for only 7 or so months, the thing breaks on me. ??? What the heck is going on? It's ridiculous that when Sony uses these fancy, durable Blue Tooth headsets, Microsoft gets the most cheap of all. I'm not talking about sound quality, I'm talking durability, and that is where Microsoft fails. However, their controllers are different story. For a while now, I've been very impressed by the controls for the system. The buttons are fantastic and responsive most of the time, and I love the design of the controller. Sometimes, the size of the controller is a problem, especially for younger players who's hands can't fit all that well around them, but this isn't a serious issue. Battery life could be better, but it's still decent. Overall, the controllers are very, very nice, and I give kudos to Microsoft for that. Now for the system design, which I'm kind of in the middle with. I said before on this site that that I love the nice, curved and boxed shape of the console, but I don't like the layout of the buttons and inputs. It looks way too complex for a system that tries to make everything look simple and easy. A nice, cleaner, and less overwhelming layout would surely suffice, something a lot more simple. But it's definitely not a bad looking system.

So, in my opinion, the XBOX 360 has a spectacular library of games, showing some of the best and amazing visuals and graphics to date. Microsoft just needs to stop charging for things that should never even be thought of for pricing. It would be nice if they made better quality hardware, but i think it's clear that Microsoft has given us a wonderful system overall.

FYI, the arcade can go online and play in multiplayer, video and voice chat, do netflix, etc. The only thing you can't do is download movies and play in playlists that require DLC that you don't have space to download. For example, in halo there are a playlists you can play in (and of course you have custom games online that you can setup yourself without an HD) that don't require DLC.
