Props for putting the problems with the wifi adapter right out there. Though if you noticed, he didn't answer that part of the question.

@MOT
Remember that you will have to purchase an HDMI cable for the PS3 as well

Anyway hardware value wise, yes the PS3 has more but in reality, do people really purchase a console for the hardware inside or the games. I believe most people purchase a system based on price, games and word of mouth from friends.

I see people are harping on what Aaron said about uncharted 2 being the Only Triple A title coming THIS Holiday period but when I look at this Holiday period, I actually do not see anything exclusive besides Uncharted 2. Yes Killzone 2 and Infamous (not triple a in my book) have released but they are already off most charts and go under the collection of good games that Sony has but neither moved the PS3 sells wise. You cannot include GT5 since it was only rumored to come out at the end of Christmas and we know how easy Poly is about breaking release dates.

Anyway, I think this interview will have MS thinking a lot about their game plan. I am sure MS is in a wait and see hold pattern to see how sales shape up in the next 6 months before they start to make changes like prices on the accessories. MS is in the position to see how things change with the PS3 new price cut before making any decisions that will cut into their profits.

MS has marketed to the "hard-core" gamer for 3+ years. Chances are, if you are a true "hard-core" gamer, you would have found a way to purchase a 360 by now. MS is now marketing more to the casual gamer. The one who likely doesn't have an HDTV, or the one who does, but still is happy watching DVDs and SD Cable on it.

MS knows what SKU is making them the most money. You can bet the Elite was at the bottom of the 3 SKUs in number of sales. They also know how many hard drives and AV cables sell per Arcade unit that is sold (and it's probably not a high ratio...AV cables and HDs have been on clearance at various retailers in the past).

Most of the people on here that are bitching about the AV cables won't be effected in the slightest. You likely already have extra HDMI cables lying around. The average consumer is never going to hook their 360 up to a receiver and expect DD5.1. The majority of 360's (and PS3s) sit in a kids bedroom (or family room) next to a TV 27" or smaller w/o a receiver in site. (Out of the 10 or so friends I know that own a "next gen" console, only 3 have HDTVs...and yes, they are all over 35 w/ kids)

In reality, you are getting a Pro with a bigger hard drive in exchange for component cable. It is much easier (read cheaper) to upgrade to a component/HDMI cable then it is to upgrade for 20GB or 60GB to a 120GB hard drive.

Yes, I know every one on the internet has uber AV setups and a 12" penis, but not everybody is as fortunate as us.

The fact that it doesn't come with WiFi and the fact that the average 360 will break if you look at it funny has discouraged me from buying one, and I'm the kind of gamer who collects consoles and likes to have them all. Even the $299 price point isn't going to make me budge. When they start manufacturing them better, I will get one. The elite could cost $150 and I still wouldn't get one until they start building them better. It's a shame.

Hey Greenberg, you say you read this blog, so answer this:

Grant asked you about lowering the price of a hard drive and you totally dodged the question. I can replace the 120GB drive in my PS3 with any off-the-shelf 2.5" SATA drive. I can get a 500GB 2.5" SATA drive for under $100 if I shop around. Meanwhile, I am forced to buy Microsoft's 120GB drive for a minimum of $130, which is nothing more than a 120GB 2.5" drive in an enclosure with a proprietary connector, or risk getting banned from Live for modifying my console. So I guess my question is, what the fuck is wrong with you? Do you seriously think that a 120GB drive for that price is a good value? Do you huff paint thinner? Inquiring minds want to know.

The acronym "SKU" is really starting to bug me for some reason...
It's seems people are adding it to sentences for no apparent reason or when it's really not necessary.

I think I'm turning into a grumbly old man.

Great interview, even if I didn't like all the answers.

I just wanted to give a quick pat in the back to Joystiq. This is the type of interviews I like to see! Very straight and direct questions (even if the answers were not). Way to go Joystiq! I hate to see when other sites always seem to shy away from direct and drilling questions.

$299 for a 120 gig PS3... with WiFi AND free ONLINE PLAY
AND automatically comes with rechargable Dualshock controllers via USB
which comes to around $320 for SONY

$299 for a 120 gig xbox 360 elite...
$100 for a WiFi Adapter
$50 for a Gold LIVE membership

$19 for a play n charge kit (not included mind you)

comes to around $500 for xbox

wasn't this around the same cost for a 80 gig backwards compat. PS3??

Sony was right...

(damn I can't find the article but I think it was...)
The xbox 360 is a add on money pit (or something like that)

Um, I've working for MGS (Microsoft Game Studios) for two years and I've never even heard of this guy. Is he some marketing front like major nelson? Granted he fits right in with the rest of the PR team with that sad goatee, but seriously, who is he? I can't even find him on the internal directory.

Did everyone that read/didn't read the article just go straight down and +1 every answer or something? Theres a lot more blue in the comments section than grey.

I'm glad he reads joystiq... I hope he reads all comments made here and realises what a sheep he is.

Has anyone realised regardless of all the negative feedback people give Microsoft. They always turn around and say "We have many satisfied customers enjoying blah blah blah. I hate that line....its so annoying. I would love to see someone from Microsoft come out and say....

"We are extremely sorry for our low quality hardware. We realise this was a design fault, and we seem to have just worked out the issues. Sorry for the wait, we were too busy worrying about numbers rather than problems".

My view on things......
I hate the ps3 controller, I'm too scared to turn on my xbox360. I'm upgrading my graphics card on my PC....

I sort of disagree with the categorization that the netflix instant view on netflix.com is far better than the xbox experience as it is now. Yes you can search netflix, but I've never found any search feature that lets me only search instant view netflix.. If somebody knows how to do that please reply and prove me wrong, but in general I've just had to "hope" that the thing I'm searching for comes up with an instant view tab when i search for things on that site. With that in mind .. i still wish netflix.com and xbox had better searches than they do now specifically for instant content...

Despite Greenberg's deplorable PR avoidance (executives sneaking around hard answers stinks even in the game press), I came away from this article thoroughly impressed with Chris's sharp tack and persistence. Work like this is why I read about video games.
