Update: Robert Bowling has confirmed Zimmer is contributing music to Modern Warfare 2.
Hans Zimmer is a pretty prominent composer on the Hollywood circuit, winning awards for his music for such films as Gladiator, Pirates of the Caribbean and As Good As It Gets. He's even worked on a game before, contributing original material to The Simpsons Movie: The Game.
If the composer's listing (PDF link) at GSA Music is to be believed, he's also composing the score to surefire multi-billion seller, Modern Warfare 2. We've reached out to Infinity Ward for comment and will get back to you as soon as we can.

I like Harry Gregson-William's work a lot. He's got a distinct sound to his stuff that you can just pick up on almost immediately. I know I did when I first popped in COD4. But then, maybe I wouldn't have if I didn't look him up and see he composed stuff for Metal Gear back in the day.
I dunno. Seems like a pointless change to me, and I question whether it's true or not. I could just be fussy though :P

Very nice, I was hoping that MW2 would have an awesome score. The score is one of the biggest things that drew me into the story and pace of the Halo games. Not to say that CoD4 had a bad score but it certainly isn't ingrained in my memory the way Halo's is

@pete don't be so hard on them, although they were a little biased against SONY previous months. BTW Joystiq it's been said thousands of times to add an EDIT function, what gives? At least for registered members. Or getting more spam/comments means more to you?

Epic. Now I have to buy this game (PC game is 60$, so I had doubts before).

Don't forget that he also composed the music in Black Hawk Down; it's one of my favorite movies. He would probably be a great fit for MW2 judging from his past works in the action movie genre.

No love for Pirates of the Caribbean? The song they roll at the credits is so awesomely epic it made me forget momentarily how corny each of the sequels were. That is evidence of a good soundtrack.

YES!!
I love film scores and I'm a big fan of his music :)
If the soundtrack becomes available on the PS Store, I'll definitely buy it.
The score for the "The Rock" which he did with Nick Glennie-Smith and Harry Gregson-Williams was great. Also like Crimson Tide, Broken Arrow, Back Draft,
Batman Begins, The Peacemaker, etc. I can go on and on :D

That explains why I confused Zimmer with Gregson-Williams when they mentioned Gladiator. Apparently Lisa Gerrard, who worked with Zimmer on Gladiator, also worked with Gregson-Williams in Man on Fire.

This guy has an almost ridiculous track record of amazing music, so this just makes MW2 more of a blockbuster.

Nothing can beat his work for Pirates of the Carribean, his score was amazing for all three movies.
Angles and Demons was also a pretty decent score.

They're really pulling out all the stops for this game, aren't they. MW2 will definitely sweep the Game of the Year Awards, if only for Activision/Infinity Ward's effort.

This just adds to my belief that the producers of Blackhawk Down really ought to sue for royalties from Activision.

Both Hans and Harry own huge studios full of composers who they often designate work to, and these composers often create whole soundtracks without any input from the big men themselves. I know for a fact that Harry GW didn't actually write a note for MGS4, it was all done by his composer monkeys in his style. When I talked to him last year he hadn't even played the game himself. That's why they are both so very very rich and are able to 'compose' for so many projects at once.
