It seems the increasingly popular "Horde" mode first presented in Gears of War 2 (before spreading to other popular FPS titles in some form) isn't just proliferating through the shooter genre -- GameSpy recently revealed details for "The Last Stand," a similar gametype which will soon be introduced into Dawn of War II.
The new mode, which will come as a free download for those who own the full game, lets three players select either the Space Marine, Ork or Eldar hero classes, then face off cooperatively against wave after wave of computer-controlled adversaries. Between waves, players will be able to level up their heroes and manage their equipment. The series' strategic roots aren't being thrown out the window -- players will need to work together to stay alive and capture score-multiplying control points.
We'll undoubtedly learn more about this intriguing expansion to the well-received strategy title during Relic's panel at PAX 2009.

There's actually a mod for Dawn of War 2 called Hero's Deffence Mod, which lets you do basically the same thing. Check it out :)

this seems like it will be way too easy. Just make all your squads heavy bolter gunners and line em up on cover. Then go make a sandwich or something

Heavy bolters are not so great against the bigger Tyrannids/vehicles.

Are you really going to use the exact same splash graphic for two stories in a two hour period? Griffin, I always thought you were the good son.

"...first presented in Gears of War 2"
Funny. I could have sworn that everyone stole the idea from Left 4 Dead.

"first presented in" most people would take that to mean the game that was release first which ya know, Gears of War 2 was

I could have sworn that there were survival modes in games long before Gears 2 and Left 4 Dead anyways. Many of Timesplitters' arcade challenges ring a very audible bell.

UT2004 had a horde type mode, just no one from the console generation knows any PC DM games :D

Wait, what? "First presented in Gears of War 2"?
I remember hours of playing co-op with friends against wave after wave of increasingly harder NPC mobs in one of the original Unreal Tournament games 5-6 years ago.
It was one of the default modes that came with the game, although I think we had to use a mod that allowed us to unlock the vehicles maps (which is where it became really fun).

Agreed, but Unreal's implementation was primitive compared to Gears of War 2. It was more of a novelty feature than a full fledged mode that anyone played. Epic finally nailed it in Gears 2.

Actually, I believe the original inspiration for this "Horde Mode" movement is Resident Evil 4's Mercenaries Mode

Uhhh...cooperative play against loads of computer controlled enemies isn't anything new. I remember playing WC3 mods where everyone picked a hero and then co-op'd against wave after wave of enemies. I can't quote the earliest occurrence, but I know SmashTV came before both WC3 as well as Gears2.
While Gears2 may have brought this type of gameplay back to the forefront of gamers' minds, giving it all the credit is quite a stretch.

While other games may have done it first, Gears definitely popularized it and started the current trend, no question about it. Does anyone honestly think that every game since would have had it if not for the success of Horde mode?

Well Avp by rebellion (1999) had a similar kind of mode by the way

Warcraft III: Custom Hero Line Wars
Comparing this to Horde Mode in Gears of War is stupid.
CHLW had this going on before the XBOX360 was even conceived.
And now that I think about it, It was a lot more complex and fully featured too.
