EA releases Fight Night Round 4 DLC, dubious sales data
40
First thing's first: EA's official blog informs us that the new DLC we reported on a few weeks back is available for download, which adds a bunch of new faces to pummel. There's also a title update that flips the switch on the new button-based control scheme. Okay, now onto the juicy stuff.
EA also sent us a press release about the new content inad server Fight Night Round 4, but took care to point out that the game had "sold over a million units in its first month," according to NPD data. Our more observant readers may remember the game sold 471.1K on Xbox 360 and PS3 in June and 116K on Xbox 360 in July and, considering the PS3 version wasn't even on the July list, you can see it just doesn't add up. Even if we assume FNR4 on PS3 sold 96K -- lower than the last title on July's list -- it still doesn't add up. We're not mathologists (well, okay, one of us is), but Denmark is stinkin' something fierce right now.

should we be surprised that such a ridiculous omission of the face buttons is followed by an equally ridiculous of actual sales numbers?

Maybe all the copies that were sold were also traded in that same month. Since Gamestop technically "bought" all the copies back, that made the total units sold over a million! Or, hey, maybe there were half a million copies sold to Blockbuster for rentals.
OK, those are stupid, but do you really think EA's got a better answer?

Wayne - I think online gaming may never get spammage and cheesing completely irradicated, especially not in this gen. It may take 2 more console gens before we come even close but, at the same time, I just think it's just the nature of the online gaming beast, to be honest with u. This is why I DON'T game online with random people.

It's a release we were sent. I checked EA's site and it's not there, but here's the section:
"Electronic Arts announced today that its first downloadable boxer pack for Fight Night Round 4 is now available on the PLAYSTATION® Network™ and Xbox LIVE™ Marketplace. Featuring Oscar De La Hoya, Vitali Klitschko, Wladimir Klitschko, and alternate versions of George Foreman and James Toney, the downloadable boxer pack retails for 400 Microsoft points and $4.99 on Xbox LIVE Marketplace and the PLAYSTATION Network, respectively. Named the Game Critic Awards “Best Sports Game of E3 2009” and having sold over a million units in its first month*, Fight Night Round 4 has been winning over reviewers and fans since its release on June 23rd. "
*According to NPD data
Hope that helps!

Thanks. I was just curious if they were sourcing NPD. It doesn't make much sense that they would since it sold internationally.

1 million units sold to retailers, duh.
Either that or the fact that it's already late August, and I'm sure EA has better data provided than Joe forumgoer or Joystiq.

Hopefully the alternate costumes include the famous "Oscar de La Hoya wearing fishnets and high heels" that he likes to take photos in so much.

I played FNR 3 and was an advocate for face buttons. When I heard that FNR4 had no face buttons, I was pretty upset and said "fuck this game". I never liked TPC because it's pretty inaccurate and you can spam just as much as you could with face buttons. The new TPC makes it more dubious gave me initial frustrations, but I swallowed my pride and tried out the new TPC.
Honestly, the mechanics still feel awkward and imprecise, but I got used to the feel now and can do what I need to do 80% of the time. I am a hardcore fighting game player (SF series, GGXXAC, MvC2, CvS2, VF series, Tekken series) and I know that precision and execution are so important in a fighting game, but in FNR 4 you get some space for error, so its not as bad as I thought it would be. I still prefer buttons, but you lose a few things here and there (no button for marquee punch, wtf). Either way, I can play this game competently enough to where I can look over its flaws.

De la Hoya, huh? Nice. I wish the DLC had included Holyfield as well. Or even Marciano. BTW.... which is exactly Foreman's alternate look?

Didn't see it mentioned, but last time it was reported as being $10 - turns out it's only $5. Not that they didn't already nickel and dime us for the Madden stuff already, but hey, at least it's a bit more easier to swallow.

While I was working at Gamestop when this released, all of a sudden the company started cutting hours left and right, even ending an inspection mid-visit at the store near my house. No store I knew had enough hours to get by without some sacrifices, and Gamestop started requiring 6-day work weeks from all Store Managers (because they are salaried and don't get paid past 40, so forcing them to work 60 means the company doesn't have to pay other people). That was all because the game bombed so hard and Gamestop would rather f*** all of it's employees in the @$$ than look like it didn't make enough money to please stockholers.
Every store even had DOZENS of FN4 in their back rooms that were expected to go quickly and didn't (my store was tiny and we had maybe 60 back there, likely 1/2 of what some bigger stores had).
Sorry for the long post, but I just wanted to show just how badly these sales numbers really are - one of the biggest game retailers in the world went absolutely apesh*y because of them.

So I guess I won't be playing online anymore now that the cheat button configuration is available. The fair playing field was fun while it lasted. Thanks a lot EA.

The only reason I care about sales numbers for ANY game is because if I like it, those help determine whether there will be a sequel, sometimes. I think the FN4 will continue unless the numbers are extremely putrid to the point where they are not making some sort of profit, at all.
Other than that, I love FN4. Best boxing game ever, imo. I was rocking out the last 2 nights against a couple of the new fighters. My only issue was how the old, fat and actually slow George Foreman seemed too quick with his punches and took an ASS WHOOPIN' from my younger George Foreman to the point that he shoulda been "dead" by the 5th or 6th round. Somehow, dude made it to the final round before he wouldn't get up from the canvas. The previous round, I knocked him down 4 TIMES and he kept getting up. NO way that shoulda happened especially against the young George Foreman and the way I DESTROYED him in each round.
Oh, and the funny thing was how we both seemed to tire at the SAME TIME in the 8th. Didn't make sense. EA has to work on that

This title was really disappointing. The lack of depth is really apparent after you finish career mode.
Then ads it added in the DLC are really obtrusive and annoying. I'm sorry, I maybe old school but if I pay $60 for a game, there's no wiggle-room for ads. I didn't pay some sort of discounted price, I paid a lot of money already. You're not giving me a free service in return for ads.
I returned this game within 1 month for in-store credit.
