This has been a big week for pieces of gaming hardware getting explodified -- this time around, the subject of dissection is the turntable peripheral for Activision's upcoming Mix Master Mike sim, DJ Hero. However, the disassembly wasn't committed by a tech-savvy hacker, or even a DIY site. Instead, the operation was performed by the Federal Communications Commission. Yes, your tax dollars are being applied to the destruction of video game peripherals.
Though most of the depictions of the turntable controller have been glamorous but somewhat non-revealing, the FCC completely exposes the controller in it's most vulnerable state. We'd say the FCC is kind of like the Hustler of gaming hardware snapshots -- but we would never actually say that because that would be an awfully creepy thing to say on a video game blog.
[Thanks, Caleb]

People can bitch all they want about Activision milking the GH Franchise, but darned if I'm not intrigued by this. It actually looks a little more difficult than GH does.

@ Alan Hong & Evildude: In regards to your ignorant comment "ghetto rap music". Where the EFF do you think DJing & Scratching comes from? It was invented by DJ's in the 70's who played along side MC's (rappers). Without the "ghetto rap music" you wouldn't be anticipating the release of this game or even having this conversation.

FWIW the teardown for FCC submission is done by 3rd party test labs and is paid for by the manufacturer...our tax dollars only go to train the reviewers that are on staff at said 3rd party lab and are licensed by the FCC to certify these products.

GH controllers have always been compatible with GH games. What the hell are you talking about? Why would DJ Hero be any different?
I can play GH5 with my Xplorer, and I can play GH2 with the newest GH controllers.
Sure, there's new features in the new GH controllers, but the basic functionality is still there. You don't have to play GH5 with a touch strip, you don't have to play Rock Band with solo buttons, yadda yadda yadda.

I actually just started investing in all of the equipment to DJ. I've got my first table, and the second should be here Saturday. I'm getting the mixer lat and then going to town.
I'm dropping about 1200 bucks here, and DJ Hero looks fun and effective for 1/10th of the cost. D:
I have a feeling I'll be getting this down the road when it's ~$80.

I love the fact that the boards have crazy names: DJ Brain Connect Board, DJ Attack Board (which has "Attack1 - Attack on it. LOL when i saw that), and the most interesting one, GH5 DJ Crossfader.
*thinks to myself*
I wonder what GH5 stands for......
lol.

I was thinking as I read the article just how bad this must piss off a Pub / Dev. I mean they have this in depth plan on releasing images and then bam, ugly shot.
It's like MySpace - really, how many pics of girls AREN'T at cute angles and with mood lighting?
Angles and lighting can make just about anything hot.
You know what's even more jacked up though? I actually changed my view as soon as I read "We'd say the FCC is kind of like the Hustler of gaming hardware snapshots" I dunno, maybe it reminded me of the first time I saw .......................................... in Hustler after seeing the pretty version in Playboy. While I was certainly scared, I appreciated the honesty and it became beautiful in it's own right.
I think this has been my best post ever BTW and no one will even read it due to me being late to the party.
