GOG.com offers good ol' deal on Unreal titles

Believe it or not, there was a time before Unreal Tournament III when the series was (gasp!) not purely about multiplayer. It had ... a story. This story is about how the purveyors of good ol' games at GOG.com remember these less competitive times, and want their patrons to, as well. So, from now through next Monday, August 31, the site is offering the plot-driven Unreal and Unreal II: The Awakening for $8.49 a pop.
Of course, if you're still keen to revisit the transition into a tournament-play franchise, the first Unreal Tournament and still-quite-excellent Unreal Tournament 2004 are also being sold at the same low prices, through Monday. Us? We'll be playing other games, but are still glad we managed to make it through this post without referring to GOG.com's sale as an "unreal deal." (Wait, did that count?)

ironically, all those games play the same
Einhanderkiller @ Aug 29th 2009 1:07AM
Not really.

Your guess is off.
It must be a guess because anyone who says that let's say Unreall II plays exactly like Unreal Tournament 2004 hasn't played the games.
Skaz @ Aug 29th 2009 9:20PM
Skaz fails to realize how this is ironic.

Love GOG, great guys, great games, and great service. That said, this isn't one of their best deals, imho. Last weekend's was much better.
But maybe that's because I only really want to play Unreal 1... if they dropped it to $5.99 i'd just have to go for it though.
DiscoVader @ Aug 28th 2009 11:09PM
Or you could go to a local game store and snag the Unreal Anthology for 10 bucks, which has all four of those in one box.
gLitterbug @ Aug 28th 2009 11:15PM
Too bad the only really good Unreal is the first game. Still have the disc and fondly remember the enjoyment it brought to me.

It was the first really atmospheric FPS i played and one of my favorites back in the day, along with Marathon.
Chief Oddball @ Aug 28th 2009 11:35PM
I actually thought Unreal II (Aida's gigantic...um, head...and all) was a pretty good game. This article makes me want to go dig up the CD, wherever it went to.

If Unreal 2 is any indication of how another story-based Unreal would be, I'm happy the series has become almost exclusively multi-player. Multi-player is clearly the strength of the series (and as saturated as the FPS market is, who wants a half-assed experience?).
Huey2k2 @ Aug 29th 2009 12:15PM
Go play the original Unreal, much better than Unreal 2.
Zephiel @ Aug 28th 2009 11:51PM
got all of those and III for $20 on steam a while ago.

If you can still find them, Gamestop has this collection on DVD for 1.99. Unreal is a good single player game, but Unreal 2 is just awful. It's makes for a great example of how not to make a game.

The amount of puns keep getting higher and higher on this site.
But hey, these games sound like a spot of Good Ol' Fun and for a semi-low price.
Waaaiiittt a tick..

In Star Fox Falco's voice (Not Falco the singer):Personally I prefered Unreal 2 the awakening over Halo back in the day.
Yeah maybe is just the nostalgia talking probably after so many FPS is going to seem like a pile of crap but I actually have good memories of that game.
As for Halo I won a Lan tournament back in the release but since I was an elitist PC gamer that emanated concentrated smug back in the day I was unimpressed,it wasn't until I got my Ps2 in 2004 I started to like consoles.
Dafrety @ Aug 29th 2009 3:07AM
I have none. If you're going to recommend at most two to a person with no nostalgia who would like in on the series, which two would it be in order of preference?

If you're going to buy an unreal game, buy unreal 3 to help with the population problem, lol. Its a solid game, but hard to find matches online except on weekends.
Otherwise, of the games above, Unreal gold and Unreal 2004 are the best.
CaveDan @ Aug 29th 2009 9:23AM
Look up "Unreal Anthology" and save yourself money if you can find it. It's listed as "$1.99. New" and contains all 4 of those games.
Jawmuncher @ Aug 30th 2009 2:17AM
I love Unreal especially the very first one.

"there was a time before Unreal Tournament III when the series was (gasp!) not purely about multiplayer."
Actually, the Unreal Tournament series was entirely multiplayer _until_ UT3.
The Unreal series however, was more single-player focused.
