Realtime Worlds celebrates new office opening, ever-expanding staff
Like the Scottish equivalent of George and Weezie, Crackdown developer Realtime Worlds is movin' on up. Rather than a deeeluxe apartment in the sky, the company has just opened an 8,000 sq. ft. office, adding to its already existing 26,000 sq. ft. location. Quite a feat considering the company moved into its current studio less than three years ago and has only ever shipped one game.
"We've had tremendous commercial and critical success, and have done the lion's share of the work towards a successful launch of our online title APB," studio manager Colin MacDonald says in the press release, referring to the company's upcoming PC MMO. Considering the down economy and flood of layoffs we saw earlier in the year, it's always good to see some expansion -- RTW is looking to reach over 300 employees by years end. And you could be one of them, as the company wants to remind everyone that "over 40 vacancies" exist in the careers section at the Realtime Worlds website. You live in Scotland, right?

That's enough agent. Crackdown 2 has been waited on for far too long and now you sold it to someone else. Crackdown fans everywhere are obliged to attack you with brute force. Now get cracking on those orbs, agent.

Unfortunately announcements like these are usually followed up 6-9 months later with "Massive layoffs at X developer". I wish all the best to Realtime Worlds, but if they can maintain a staff of that size for longer than a single game release cycle I will be amazed.

That's my favorite level in Modern Warefare.

This doesn't bode well in my opinion. A studio makes one great game, just one, and builds a huge building and starts hiring a large staff? These guys fucked up their chance to make Crackdown 2 by starting work on APB, which looks worse and worse every time they talk about it. I wouldn't be suprised if APB sucks, RTW starts bleeding cash, and they tank due to high costs in maintaining the new staff and building. Most PC-only games do not generate enough revenue to support an entire company and their operations, especially one that is "free to play" like APB is, supposedly. Yeah, these guys made Crackdown, but I wouldn't be shocked at all if Ruffian's Crackdown 2 blows RTW's original idea off the map. It just seems like since they were passed over for Crackdown 2 they're trying to show the world just how big and awesome they've become. The mass exodus to Ruffian should be a pretty good signal that all isn't right at RTW.

Burgerbat..
You're an idiot. Do you even know what happened with the Crackdown 2 deal? RTW wasn't passed over, they chose to make APB instead. Try reading some of the press releases now and again. I'm sure Ruffian will do a good job on it, but why make a sequel when you can make something truly innovative? Do you even realise what RTW has accomplished with the character customisation? I'm in the industry and the level of detail within the character customisation is unrivalled.
and what the hell are you talking about APB looks worse and worse? have you seen the gameplay video from Cologne?

Looks like something I want to play...
My hats off to them, it's good to see a company is still hiring amidst all the layoffs and closing studios. I WANT BETA!!
Snowblind @ Aug 28th 2009 6:13PM
It's good, but mainly focuses on media and computer stuff, particularly games development. If you're looking to do something along those lines, I'd definitely recommend it.
