According to the latest pages of Famitsu (Via Examiner), Taito will be bringing a new game in the Darius series to PSP. The latest in the classic 2D horizontal-shooter franchise is titled Darius Burst, and marks the first time the series has been tapped for a title since Darius R landed on GameBoy Advance systems in Japan nearly a decade ago.
Famitsu notes Darius Burst will feature 11 levels, with non-linear paths throughout the stages -- splitting each initial level into two paths for players to choose. If you love shmups like we love shmups then you should be giddy about Taito's decision and hopeful the title will see a North American release.

Wow, I thought Taito had decided to let Darius fade away. I have Darius Gaiden and G-Darius thanks to Taito Legends 2 for the PS2 (as well as a copy of the Win95 port of the former and a Shooting Game Historica trading figure of the Silver Hawk fighter), and while I'm more of a Gradius guy, Darius is still some quality shooting. If Zuntata is again going to be contributing their surreal music, even better.
Isn't the splitting each level into two paths as much a trademark of Darius as the aquatic enemies? I seem to recall all the games have a binary tree of level paths. I hope they retain some of the mechanics from G-Darius, too, the capture ball and the alpha beam.
They should also include a port of the original arcade Darius, which was 3 screens wide, to take advantage of the PSP's widescreen aspect ratio--though, of course, 3 screens wide still wouldn't fit without black bars at the top and bottom. I just want to try it out, anyway.
Gradius Collection, Salamander Portable, Twinbee Portable, Parodius Portable, Soldier Collection, the ability to play R-Types/R-Type Delta as PS One classics, Strikers 1945 Plus, and now a new Darius? The PSP is a retro shooting force to be reckoned with.

Here's pretty much everything you need to know about Darius:

The site containing it has information on LOTS of other, more obscure games.

Sorry for the disjointed posting. I've been trying to make one post for the past half hour, but nothing would show up. I split up my text into multiple parts and posted one by one to try to see which part was blocking it from going through. It looks like the four words I originally had after "R-Type Delta" are problematic for some reason.
Anyway, the original final sentence: The PSP is a retro shooting force to be reckoned with.

SiliconEra has a scan of the Famitsu article at http://www.siliconera.com/2009/08/25/warning-a-huge-battleship-darius-burst-is-approaching-fast/ . According to the image, the stages start branching at Stage B (i.e., second stage) and result in 4 final stages and a single-run length of 5 stages. Zuntata is involved in the sound design, along with a guy named Ogura whom I think it says used to be in Zuntata. I couldn't read the names of the mecha designers, but they've been involved in Gundam 00 and Eureka Seven. The "Burst" in the title comes from the most powerful attack in the game, which seems to come from a "Burst Unit," not the Silver Hawk itself. The screenshot seems to show the Burst beam colliding with a beam from a boss, which is reminiscent of the beam dueling from G-Darius. There is a chart of the "series legendary power-up system," which I assume means it's the same as normal. That's about all the info I could squeeze out; it's not the clearest scan in the world. The only other thing that might be of interest is that the two bosses pictured are called "Iron Fossil" and "Mad Wheel."
