You probably heard the news today (oh boy) that Disney will soon acquire Marvel Entertainment. The deal will see shareholders receive $30 plus 0.745 shares of Disney stock for each share of Marvel they own. The transaction is expected to total approximately $4 billion. Of course, all we want to know is what will become of Marvel's booming licensed game business.
In a conference call following the announcement, Disney CEO Robert Iger briefly mentioned the company's plans regarding Marvel licensed games. He noted that Marvel "has smart licensing agreements with some of the best video game manufacturers in the business" and that even though Disney has been "moving in a vertically integrated direction," it's possible that it will pursue a "blend of licensed games as well as self-produced and self-distributed." He concluded that Disney has the "luxury" of deciding "what's best for the company" as the current Marvel licensing deals begin to expire.
In other words, expect Disney to bring at least some Marvel development in-house to its Disney Interactive Studios. It's important to understand the potential impact Disney's hold on Marvel could have. There are many, many Marvel games out there. Just to name a few, THQ, Activision, Sega, Gazillion and Capcom all have recently-released or upcoming Marvel titles. Activision in particular fills out a hefty portion of its portfolio with Marvel games, including Spider-Man, the recent Wolverine and the upcoming Ultimate Alliance 2. These companies may soon be faced with losing these properties altogether.
Update: Speaking to paidContent, Disney CFO Tom Staggs also had a few things to say regarding Marvel's game business. Scaggs noted that Marvel has "a number of good strong licensing agreements," adding that Disney will "enjoy the benefit of those deals." He also stated that Disney will "broaden the base of properties that [its] leveraging within Marvel," and concluded that there's an "opportunity" to expand Disney's gaming business as well.

I wouldn't say dying breed, however you do have a point and that's one positive thing I can see from this. Disney can potentially put comics into the hands of people who normally don't read them. So we'll see.

"failing franchise?" is that why Marvels sells have been wildly successful lately?

So basically this means that Deadpool game from Raven that they'd LIKE to make.. will never see the light of day, and neither will a Great sequel to Wolverine Origins... which is the best version of a Marvel Game I've ever played

I'll probablu get down votes but I don't care.
It saddens me that Disney can buy out Marvel, but can't fund a Sequel to this gen's turok :(
We need more dinosaur games

Good bye Marvel Vs. Capcom 3. Just the idea was too good to be true.

You might be right about that.
If so that's sad indeed.

come on, chant with me people....they'll listen, I'm sure of it
Also, in regards to fanboy rage....just remember the only one actually getting screwed on this deal is Universal (who just happens to be losing the theming off half the rides at islands of adventure)

I don't see why some are so agressive towards this. I'm fairly sure Disney will just keep Marvel opperating in much the same way it right now. Don't expect to see their comics suddenly become more "Disney".
What happens to all those Marvel rides at Universal Studios now though?

The rides will stay. All that will change are the themes. And that's not really that big of a deal...

No, Universal hasn't released any of the Marvel movies, that I can think of. That's all Fox and Columbia Tri-Star.
That's still going to be a little messy all on its own, but that's really miniscule as movie companies strike behind-the-scenes deals with each other all the time...

*sigh*
I don't see how you guys that are so antagonistically passionate about this business deal have so little to no insight as to how LITTLE this will affect the integrity of Marvel's IPs—i.e. no more than what Marvel has been doing for decades anyway!
The X-Men cartoon from the 90s? Go watch that now and tell me how badass it is when you ignore the nostalgia. Wolverine's a little bitch in that compared to comics. Badass to kids. Little bitch to anybody with any appreciation of the metameme of Wolverine.
Hell, Wolverine in his own Hollywood movie is a watered-down, "family-friendly" version of himself.
And there's also a line of toys of Marvel superheros where they're all "cutified" and four heads tall, and they don't fight anybody. They just hang around and be all buddy-buddy with each other. All Marvel's prerogative.
Marvel's not going down the shitter because of this. I'm not even saying they were before. I'm just pointing out that there has long-time been this "all-ages" approach to Marvel's licensing deals, but the comics have never suffered as a result. Sure, maybe a few stupid, "alternate" PC series come along to try and sell to more timid, prudish consumers, but that doesn't stop the main arcs from continuing on.
And as has already been said many times before, Disney produces/distributes plenty of R-rated material on their own. Nobody's "selling out" here more than they already have... Crybabies.

yeah, the only real change i can see coming out of this is that marvel might make comics about Goofy or Mickey or whatever, i cant see any reason for Disney to exert creative control over stuff like Spider-Man though, that shit sells well even when it's awful

The Activision deal expires in 2017. Still plenty of time for that Wolverine follow-up, new Spider-Man titles, and Ultimate Alliances 3, 4, and 5. Somehow, I don't think awesome comic book gaming will be affected for a while.

You know Walt Disney Feature Animation is run by John Lasseter now, the guy who is also a founder and top dog at Pixar, right? And you know he thinks Eisner's decision to cut the traditional animation staff five/six years ago was the most bone-headed thing ever, and so he's revitalized it himself, right?

I know this is Joystiq and all but f*** the games, what will Disney do with Marvel comics as a whole?
The games never were that spectacular until a few recent titles, but the comics have been going strong for ages, and the movies were mostly getting better.
Hopefully Disney will keep their cheesy, overacting, kiddy 3 fingered gloves out of Marvel's content.

I have no issues with this deal as long that disney does not screw with what made marvel attractive for buying . one thing i hope disney does not try to do with marvel movies is that crap they did w/ dumbo & fantasia by puting them in a valut for a 30 year period then rereleasing later.

I'm guessing I'm the only one that caught that Beatles reference?
My biggest fear with this is that they're going to "happy up" Marvel and take away some of the gritty and/or sarcastic personalities that make Marvel great (Wolverine, Deadpool, etc.) I love Disney as it's own entity but I realllllly hope they don't screw Marvel up...
