We know -- it's tiresome hearing about "DLC" when we're still waiting on "regular ol' C" -- still, our interest was piqued by the mention of possible downloadable content for Final Fantasy XIII in a recent RPG Site interview with Squeenix's Motomu Toriyama and Yoshinori Kitase. According to Kitase, the developer is "exploring the option of downloadable content, perhaps adding new areas, items or enemies." He went on to add that any DLC wouldn't expand the game's story -- that'll be completely contained within the core game.
Our hope is, as ever, that any potential expansion for the game will finally add that Final Fantasy kart racer mode we've been waiting on ever since -- wait, they already did one of those? Get out of town!

Maybe Dungeons and Such as in Lost Odyssey?
I think that could be pretty cool.

Uhhh...no. DLC does not work in a JRPG, not very well at least. Think it's best we just leave that to the western guys.

I wonder if this game's DLC will be as worthless as My Life As A Darklord's

Hopefully we can get the inevitable "International Version" enhancements via DLC, as we all know the international version will be distributed in a single country. I'm still miffed that we didn't get the job/class license board in FFXII International. Though I guess the PS3 version will be region free if it does come out, would still be nice not to have to re-buy an entire game.
The DLC for Infinite Undiscovery and The Last Guardian (And Blue Dragon, Tales of Vesperia, Eternal Sonata, and Lost Odyssey for that matter) were either useless unlocks or completely forgettable bonus content, so hopefully we get something substantial for once.

I'm still waiting on US releases of the International Versions of FFX and FFXII too. FFX's added so many extra bosses and sphere grid enhancements, I'd love to try it. Ditto for the Forced-Job License Board in International XII.

yeah they are actually telling us not to worry that the complete game will be included in the single player experience and you will not need to download and DLC in order to finish the game or continue the story or tie up loose ends of the story.
THEY ACTUALLY ANNOUNCED THERE WILL BE NO NEEDED DLC FOR FF13.
how is that a bad thing?
they just did the opposite of what you claim.

and whats wrong with a developer/publisher talking about DLC when they know about it, and not later?
they obviously have to start making DLC before a game is released in most single player cases, but map packs are another thing.
so if a developer is making DLC whats wrong with telling people?
all this DLC was not a part of previous gen stuff. this is all just more stuff for fans of specific games to have fun with. in my case I enjoyed all 5 DLC expansions of fallout 3 and cant wait for the vegas expansion next year.
did I expect the DLC to be on the fallout 3 disc? no
i still cant fathom how they put that much on 1 disc for us already with the single player game.
DLC doesnt hurt if you dont buy it. so whatever.

@ tmac: Pokemon is huge.
Anyways, I remember Golden Sun had a battle mode but I never got to try it out. It would be cool if more JRPGs had battle modes, but only ones that weren't very linear and you knew your character turned out at least somewhat unique. Dragon Quest for instance, there is always the best weapon in the game that you need to win, so it would be terrible. Cool idea though :D

This sounds like a great idea but there's one problem I can think of. When people level their characters high enough to do 9,999 points of damage this would cause PvP to be a game of chance(who hits first) rather than actual skill. But if they did it like FF Dissida on PSP then it could work.

Tiny Speedos on the men too, don't forget how much Square Enix loves pretty boys. Let's see the fangirls love Cloud after they see him in nothing but a horribly ugly Speedo.
This FFXII fanart comes to mind:

they are just saying that they will release DLC in which is not needed for the game and will have no effect on the main story.
no need to worry.
but every MAJOR game this gen will have some DLC, have it be themes and pics at the least....

DLC is for all the material that was cut in order to fit onto DVD9. Unfortunately the Bluray will only get what the DVD9 version recieves.

I smell ol' Msofty on this one, wanna bet they are going to pay to get exclusive (but useless) DLC for the 360 version? I seem to remember S-E saying there would be no DLC for this game, though I also remember them saying FF13 would be finished and released on PS3 in Japan before the 360 port was worked on, whats a couple of lies between old pals right? Good grief Square just go out of business already, let Nomura and co go work for Level 5 and sell them your mainstays while your at it. Each day they further degrade their once untouchable status, I miss the PSX days....

"New areas, items, or enemies"?
Sorry, but I don't want to purchase content that would add items or enemies. I'm probably not even interested in any new areas if there aren't any additions to summons or character skills & equipment. The standard game will do just fine.

I don't think a game like this benefits from DLC.
Yeah, DLC adds stuff to do, but there is already a LOT to do in any game like this. If anything, it feels like an un-needed sidequest.
But then again I don't know the story or anything like that.
Can't wait for the regular ol' C.

Square have no shame anymore to a point where they WORSE than activision now THE orginal milkers of a franchise every word they say turns out to be false AND to top it off can some please tell how freelance translators can sub/dub anime in ONE DAY but square takes SIX MONTHS to translate they game into english

Fansubbers churn out quick subs in a day, but those tend to be inaccurate translations. Accurate subtitles take a few extra days. American licensors sometimes do simulcast subtitles, but they have to get the episodes a few days before Japanese tv airing. Ditto for dubbing. Kurokami was broadcast same day in Japan and America, dubbed in Japanese and English in their respective region. For Kurokami, they dubbed off animation tests, not even the finished product.
But isn't XIII coming out in NA and JP at the same time? I thought it was required as part of the 360 agreement.

JRPGs always take quite a while to translate. It ain't just FF games. All the item, monster, weapon names, all have to be translated, while also making sure that some words aren't intentionally foreign sounding as part of the plot's fictional universe. Plus translating the Japanese dialogue into something approaching normal English, and then editing EVERY NPC in the game's lip syncs to match the English wording. Look at FFX, where the lip sync was terrible, with some VAs (like Yuna's) even speaking slower to fill the Japanese lip sync, resulting in Yuna(and others) seeming to talk very slowly. Taking 6 months to translate the game is just fine, as long as it results in a solid end user product, especially considering all the work they have to do.
