God of War Collection coming to PS3 this holiday

It's like this, but more definition-ier.

Backwards compatibility is back ... sort of! SCEA has announced that the PlayStation 2 God of War games will be coming to PlayStation 3 on a single, HD-enhanced Blu-ray disc. Previously hinted at in a consumer survey, the God of War Collection will feature "reworked" versions of both games, running at 60 frames per second and 720p resolution. The port is being handled by Bluepoint Games, the team behind the PSN-exclusive shooter, Blast Factor. Hopefully, the games will be more than simply upscaled, giving original PS3 owners a reason to partake in the double dip. Update: And yes, it will have Trophies.

The Blu-ray collection will be available this "holiday season," and will cost $39.99 -- the same price as buying both of the games on PS2. This HD remix should give fans some time to practice Kratos' moves before God of War III completes the "triology" (oh, press release typos!) in March.

I just read the announcement and saw that the graphics are being somewhat redone and that the games will have trophies! That settles it...I'm buying this!

People still call it a trilogy when GOW3 will actually be the 4th game...

me too. i actually had GOW2 for a bit but i had to trade it for some $ at the time. and have been wanting to play these games for some time. almost went out and bought both of them a month ago, glad i didnt now

I actually considered on buying God of War 1 & 2 later on this year so this is great news . I can't wait for this holiday season! As a owner of 2 consoles now (finally bought 360, RED elite), i can enjoy games from both Sony and now MS.

I too just bought the 360 Elite last month. I got the GTA IV bundle for $339. Sweet deal considering it comes with GTA and an HDMI cable.

I never got the chance to play the God of War games. I'm definitely picking this up when it comes out. Let's hope Sony does more PS2 upgrades in the future.

God of War is one of the greatest games ever made. It's not suprising that this game is a Sony exclusive. What other exclusives are there on the 360 that are worth having? Halo? HAHAHAHahahahaHAHA! Please, that game is for little girls. If only the little boys that play xbox would realize that Sony has all the best games. Yes, God of War is awesome. I wish everyone would stop argueing about which console is better and just enjoy their damn games. Being a fanboy of any console or company just means you let them take a shit all over you when they want to. Why can't the 360 and the PS3 be good?

Why can't they release both titles as downloadable PSN games?

I've played through the first game, and it was ok, a tad too frusterating at times though. I do want to play the second one (friends have said it's better then the first in many ways), but I'm not willing to pay $20 for a standard PS2 version (that's too much for any last generation game) and I'm not willing to pay $40 for a compilation of 2 games that I really only want to play the first one. Now if they released these individually as PSN titles, I'd be ok with investing $20 for an updated version, though I'd be happier if it was cheaper (but doesn't that apply to everything :) ).

I guess my fingers are crossed that this will appear at the local video game rental store will offer it for rent...

They would probably be much too large as downloadable game. This is especially true if they were remastered as these versions are going to be when released. They have done it for like 3-4 retail games this generation (Warhawk, Socom, Gran Turismo Prologue & Siren in episodes) and they were all very large downloads.

I don't anything is stopping it from a technical perspective but the size of the downloads would be enormous.

Actually, that's a good point that I didn't take into consideration. The stupid thing is, i'm usually quite mindful of the size of games because my Internet Provider limits us to 20 gigs a month (and that's the absolute biggest plan they offer... fortunately they're upping that limit to 60 gigs starting tomorrow!!!).

I also didn't realize that they intended to add Trophy support, so with that in mind, I'm a little less critical about this retail package... but I'm still leaning towards renting only.

There's no way this isn't just a really good upscaling of the two games. The sudden announcement and far-too-soon release date means it's a straight up port with technical enhancements, not artistic enhancements. Still gonna buy it, though.

The people who ask for backwards-compatibility would stop if they saw how shitty the games look when you play them on PS3. Shadow of the Colossus is basically unplayable.

I remember when I rented GOW2 because it was supposed to be optimized to look good when upscaled with the 60GB PS3. It looked like crap on my HDTV. I had to play the game on my PS2 on a CRT. Looked so much better. I never played another PS2 game on that my PS3 again. Yup, I sold it.

don't hate me for this, but I still have yet to actually play any of the GoW games... I've seen them being played numerous times, and even held the box in my hands a few times, but another game would pique my interest and i'd pass everytime...

I guess this wold be a good incentive to go back and see what all the fuss is about.

Don't feel bad, I never played any of them either. Not really the genre that I'm interested in. But for $40, I might as well. And yes my trophy whore is coming out on this one, but so what. Two games for a great price? Sold.

this is JIMP worthy. seriously, i'm ok with rebuying a lot of my old PS2 games if they're HD and trophy supporting. ICO and SotC, please. bring us the ultimate MGS collection- Twin Snakes, Substance, and Subsistence. FFX, X2. all of this please. i'll go ahead and pay for them now, if that's what it takes.

Trophies started way too far after I got hooked on Achievements for me to care about them, but yeah, it's definitely a nice addtition.

Sweet! I never played the PS2 God of War games, but played and loved the PSP prequel.
I'm planning on getting a PS3 this fall, so this is awesome.
