It appears that Viacom, parent company of MTV Games and Harmonix, guaranteed a minimum of $10 million, along with another potential $40 million in royalties, to its respective estates for the use of The Beatles in the upcoming Rock Band game. Sources familiar with the deal tell The LA Times that the "royalty rates on [the deal] are not even comparable to anything that has been done before." All this cash is being thrown around in the midst of a revenue decline in the rhythm genre.
MTV Games is seemingly taking even more steps away from producing and distributing peripherals. Paul DeGooyer, senior vice president at the company, explains that its "core competency is media" -- he'd rather let Activision "take on the burden of getting those super-tight margin instruments out there."

just a gut feeling that hit me while passing this headline - I think this is going to underperform bigtime.
Just a gut feeling, let's see how sales are 6 months after launch.

This isn't going to underperform bigtime. The only thing that will underpreform is the bundle sales, as most people probably already have the RB1/2 or GH:WT bundles (as they have been $100 for some time). Never underestimate the Beatles ;)

Super tight margins on plastic instruments? What? Those things are the most overpriced controllers you can buy, they cost more than real guitars (crappy guitars but still full sized ones made of wood and metal). And they arent even made very well. Theres no way in hell they dont get a huge margin on those things, they price gouge us as bad as MS does for HDD's and WiFi.

Look to those that love rock band for I do the fact of the matter is no matter what your age or music type everyone knows The Beatles. The problem is that I did not grow up in that generation nor did 90% of the people playing the band. It was a time of duress and political trauma when war was ramped and drugs were as free as that hooker on your corner. That music was inspirational and motivational to those who lived it, breathed it watched it, and my parents don't play rock band, I do. How many actually know what the song Yellow Submarine means? If you said a sub your stupider than a box of rocks. It was about a trip on acid as well as many of there other songs reflected the troubled times of that generation. I did not grow up with them nor do I care how they changed the world and there music was never inspirational to me maybe my parents but not me. Why would I spend 250 bucks for a violin shaped guitar, a cool looking bass, and a drum set that has a piece of cardboard in the front. Which btw I have had on my drum set since rb came out with my band name on it. the bottom line is that the Beatles was a piss poor choice for Harmonix since many parents dont play the band. If they would come out with Scorpions, or Linkin Park, Creed, Pearl Jam, Def Leperd, or any other band that most of us grew up with would have been a way better choice. Sorry Harmonix you went from hero to zero with this one.

So..... your premise is that if one didn't grow up during the time The Beatles were popular, one can't appreciate the songs' subtext. Can you explain, then, how I can be only 30 years old and still understand EXACTLY what "Yellow Submarine" refers to?
I grew up in the 90's and I really couldn't care less about a single-band game based around Scorpions, Linkin Park, Creed, Pearl Jam, or Def Leppard, but I'm positively salivating at the prospect of playing Beatles: Rock Band. I think you're seriously underestimating the appeal of the Beatles across multiple age groups.

I didn't know we all grew up on Linkin Park!
Seriously, dude, Linkin Park won't be remembered all in 50 years, whereas the Beatles will be remembered forever

That is why royalties should be based on percentages and sales milestones. I'm not gonna promise you too much money before I even profit from the product.

Yeah, never heard of the Beatles? Black Eyed Peas, Linkin Park? Riiiiiight. Do me a favor and google the fucking Beatles because you are either lying or fucking retarded either way your examples don't constitute real music. Secondly, don't fucking bother because it is already too late as you have clearly been infected by present popular culture (an oxymoron, I know) and if it has been already been deemed acceptable you won't appreciate it anyway. I weep for this generation, or at least mt guitar does so...gently.

I'm 25 and I dig the beatles, and I know people who are in their 20s or younger who are excited about this game. So your point is invalid. Secondly if your parents don't play RB, this is a game that might get them interested in it because it is a subject they are familiar with. Think about it.

wow. you idiots took the flamebait and ran with it. get a clue ppl: if yer talking about age and what bands are age appropriate yer off topic and out of touch..
--
anyway, think we're reaching the saturation point where most of the ppl that like these games already own kits and there should be a steep decline in instruments sold pretty soon. mtv probably sees that handwriting on the wall already..
they can make more $$ pitching dlc and stand alone retail titles with new music and fresh animations at this point. i doubt many this genre can survive much longer if devs keep pitching updated instruments every couple years.

They need to allow the third-party peripheral makers to put out some guitar controllers. On 360 all you get is the OFFICIAL version and none of the more affordable models. At least with sony you get some variety, and as a 360 owner that pisses me off!

Even if by the off chance what you say might be slightly real you have no reason to listen to music what so ever. You don't have to be a Beatles fan but you should at least know them for helping to shape music to how it is today.
Go to a doctor, get your ears cut off, and sit in the corner.

I figured this was the case.. No wonder they are trying to milk the DLC. I'm going to get the Beatles bundle just for the guitar then selling the game.. I hope HMNX does well though b/c RB is my favo franchise. I wish they wouldn't stop makin peripherals though, I heart RB fret buttons. :/

You also need to factor in the beatles fans that will buy this game (in all of it's different incarnations) as a collectors item, even if they have no interest in playing the game.
(and the violin shaped guitar IS the bass. that is paul's signature instrument)
I am gonna get this game, and all of the eventual dlc. and probably a bigger 360 HD, because it is the Beatles. (and the 3 part harmony thing looks like a lot of fun)

Do not give up the music game industry to Activision.
I can't imagine what the world would be like with only an Activision-made Guitar Hero for us to play with... *shiver*

Am I the only one who still wonders what the special suprise inside the Band Bundle is? There's got to be some reason for the extra $50...
