Here's today's enormous, shocking revelation: The recently announced Blu-ray God of War collection is going to be a whole heck of a lot like its PS2-based counterparts. Aside from a 720p visual boost and perhaps the addition of an HD-friendly HUD and font, the rest of the re-released games will "be the pure experience, what people would have played when they played God of War originally," according to a recent IGN interview with Sony Santa Monica's director of product development, John Hight.
If you're put off by the lack of new features, perhaps your raging Trophy addiction will be cause enough to purchase the Blu-ray collection. Hight confirmed that the two games both contain their own unique sets of trophies, adding that there would "probably" be two prestigious Platinum trophies available for hardcore completionists. We shudder to imagine the amount of dismemberment required to obtain these merits. This is us shuddering.

I don't get this article. Sony said they would be the same except for the graphics. Now joystiq needs to reprint a negative article with the info that "it'll be the same except for the graphics".
What I want to know is are the textures new? Because if those are the same, the game won't really look any better and I won't be buying it.

Both are exactly the same as the originals, except for:
-- It'll be in 720p,
-- It'll have AA enable (2x), whereas the original didn't,
-- It'll be 60FPS (presumably all the time, unlike the originals, which ranged from 30FPS to 60FPS),
-- It'll have a new HUD,
-- And it'll have trophies.
So no new textures. It'll basically look the same as the original versions, just with a lot less jaggies.

If the textures are the same, the game will look the same, maybe a bit better AA.
Most of what you see on the screen isn't edges, it's textures. And if the textures are not higher res, they won't look any better in HD, they'll look the same.
I think I was just unsold on this game.

I still think it's a pretty obvious difference. Here's a comparison short SM Galaxy running in 480p vs 720p with the same textures: http://images.nintendolife.com/news/2009/07/super_mario_galaxy_shines_in_720p/attachment/0/large.jpg
The difference is obvious.

but whats the big deal about the graphics??
God of War 2 looks better than some games that are out on PS3 & 360 now...even WITHOUT doing anything to it....I mean it REALLY showed the extent of the PS2's power...the way you guys keep talking is as if it has HORRIBLE graphics

I've played GoW2 on my HDTV and while it is nice for a PS2 game, it really is pretty far behind today's games. And having the video signal scaled up to the 1080p just makes everything look a bit blurry. I would much rather play a version rendered in HD rather than scaled to HD even if nothing else was changed.

Mario doesn't have texturing on him there. He (and the shine) are solid colors, just with lighting.
The stars are textured, and guess what, they don't look noticeably better on the right than on the left.

This will be good for me. I haven't played any of the God of War games... and a plus, they're getting updated to HD and trophies too... so... win/win.

I wouldn't say either is better...
This is an obvious visual upgrade as well as a method of addressing backwards compatibility issues that many gamers want to see a fix for. Also, trophies for those who get off on that kind of thing.
The Prime Trilogy is a different type of port, one that completely changes the control scheme of the original two games.
In any case, I'll be getting the Prime Trilogy soon and the God of War set when I get my own PS3. Never got a chance to play them too much so it's great that they're doing this.
Also, Storm Eagle, who cares if MP is rated Teen? Is your lust for blood and boobs really preventing you from functioning that it is a factor in your buy?

I would kill for MGS2 and 3 (and maybe Twin Snakes) in widescreen and progressive. Especially MGS3 which had all those fields, forests and mountains, that screamed for widescreen. That would require a lot of reprogramming though.

Oh hell yes. And imagine if they bumped up MGS3's framerate to 60 fps (MGS2 is already at 60). And no, it would not require a lot of reprogramming. It's not like the missing lines in 480i are non-existent. They're just not rendered on screen.
In fact, there is a boot-up disc for the PS2 called the Xploder HDTV that does allow 480p for 480i games, and we're not talking upscaling or deinterlacing.

This argument is so stupid. Every side gets a couple of classic games re-released in higher quality to be played on current systems. What's the problem? I've never been a huge fan of either games, but i still think it's awesome.

I'm interesting to see how these games perform visually. The code is certainly re- worked to run through the PS3 hardware as opposed to a PS2 emulation. If they took good care with it (and there is no reason to think otherwise of Sony with this particular franchise) we might even see some visual improvements in terms of performance (not textures or shaders). The image may actually look even cleaner making use of the different graphics processing of the RSX.

"Seriously, STFU! You're giving tmac non-stop shit for being a troll... yet what did you do here? You singled him out, rummaged through his post history and go on and on and on about nothing... why? Because he said he wanted to buy a compilation of 2 great games? Who the fuck cares? Is it really worth being a troll yourself just to call him out on a bunch of stupid shit nobody could care less about?"
Why's it upsetting you? Because its marring an article in where you'd like to read constructive comments from like-minded people instead of endless prattle to stir people up?

They could tell me that I needed to have buttsex with an elephant to play this game and I would be completely okay with that.
When I made the connection that my PS3 wasn't BC, my heart broke specifically for the GoW games.
And now that they're making it?
Well, my heart will go on. And on.

We talking the way that would require a ladder or the way that would require several stitches afterwards?

Despite its renowned history, I'm still not sure quite what the grand appeal of this game is. I picked up all of them so far, but only made it through maybe 1/4 of the first before I stopped and didn't come back.

As much as I'd love to have a GOW platinum, I wasn't able to beat either game in god mode (got close in the first one), which I'm guessing will be a requirement, plus some of those challenge rooms in GOW2 were, well, challenging.
Still, High Def. Kratos is too good to pass up. Who know, maybe my mad gaming skillz have gotten madder over the last couple of years (just like Kratos).

Man talk about Sony doing an insane turn around in 2009. I mean giving people these games bundled and both games having Trophies. It's like a God of War hardcore gamer's heaven.
God of War series is by one of my favorite single player series of all time. Sure I do own the games already, played them tirelessly and to be honest quit when I got a taste of what God Mode (GOW1) and Titan Mode (GOW2) had to offer, and to be honest...I just said "Meh".
But now that the Trophies are their, I will have a bigger incentive to actually try to beat it on those modes.
Sony just has been playing their cards right, especially since God of War 3 is only a couple of months of way. It's really a good way to give even more hype to God of War 3 and get people to buy it.
Someone please agree with me, when I say that God of War series in general deserved way more buys and sales, then a lot of these other franchizes that really only get baught by young kids under 18. I won't name any names, but when you go online and you play this certain game and all you hear are 13 year old kids talking about "I pwn, you just got teabagged.." it's really pathetic.

God of War 1 was one of my favorite games for PS2. I never owned or played God of War 2 and the PS3 isn't backwards compatible, so this is perfect.
