OnLive beta program is on, live

Should you make the cut, you'll receive an invitation, which requires a Performance Test. If your settings make the cut (the "cut" being whatever configuration OnLive is looking to test), you'll become part of a Test Group at some unspecified time, at which point the (hopefully) awesome part begins: the part in which you play games. It'll be buggy, and you'll probably have to fill out reports about the experience, but video games.
It may not have been an "official" beta, and it may have been under carefully orchestrated conditions, but our own experience with OnLive was a positive one. We'll see how the public beta compares.

Thanks....I applied we'll see how it goes.....but if I get in and there is no NDA and it suck ass I will blast this all to hell
BananaBoat @ Sep 3rd 2009 7:17AM
I'm willing to bet that the NDA will be heavy, and that you'll have to sign a bunch of crap if you want the USB dongle that onlive developed (I wonder if it will even be in the beta). I signed up, but as always with this type of thing, I know I most likely won't be selected.

I've been in plenty of betas on PC and with this being something completely different I'm pretty sure I may not get in it either....
wdelaney @ Sep 2nd 2009 6:23PM
I shall try this
tmacairjordan87 @ Sep 2nd 2009 6:23PM
Well, I was thinking that it was doubtful that my connection could handle it but the top option on connection speed was 50+ mbps (mine's 54) so maybe it could. Not that I think this will do what it promised anyway, but we'll see.
Clay @ Sep 2nd 2009 6:27PM
You have a 54 Mbps connection and you were doubtful??
tmacairjordan87 @ Sep 2nd 2009 6:28PM
I know next to nothing about computers and internet connections/speeds, as I just proved haha
Ballistic H @ Sep 2nd 2009 6:29PM
I don't think anybody with bandwidth data cap on their plan would be willing to try that.
Stridery @ Sep 2nd 2009 6:31PM
I have a strange feeling you are seeing your wireless speed to your router and not your actual internet speed....
tmacairjordan87 @ Sep 2nd 2009 6:38PM
Maybe. All I did was highlight the internet icon and it said 54, but I opened the network connections and clicked on mine and hit the "view status of this connection" on the side and it actually says the speed is 100 mbps. I went to my father's computer (since his doesn't have wireless, it's all connected to the modem) and it said the same thing, 100 mpbs.
I obviously can't tell the difference or figure out what's really what :\
tmacairjordan87 @ Sep 2nd 2009 6:40PM
Ok I think I've got it now. I noticed the wireless connection on the bottom of that menu and hit the same "view status" button and that came up as 54, so I guess my actual speed is 100 mpbs.
DangerMouse @ Sep 2nd 2009 6:42PM
That's the card's speed (100mbps) and the wireless g speed (54mbps), not the internet speed.
Mats @ Sep 2nd 2009 6:44PM
no, thats your network speed, not your ISP speed. Your father has a 100mb LAN connection (network) and you are on a 54bit WLAN.
Test your connection speed with a ISP test.
ANTCEP @ Sep 2nd 2009 6:47PM
that's the speed on your home network, go to speedtest.net and test your speed there.
tmacairjordan87 @ Sep 2nd 2009 6:48PM
Oh ok yeah that seems more like it now. It was a hell of a lot lower than both of those numbers. I'm stupid lol
Gun Barrier @ Sep 2nd 2009 6:54PM
go to speedtest.net to find out your actual download speed. Mine is 10 Mbs
Marrvia @ Sep 2nd 2009 7:05PM
From what I understand, all On-live is, is they are streaming a video feed the game to you and you are streaming back the controls in order to play it. If you have a fast enough speed to stream an HD movie with no lag, then you should have enough speed for this. Your connection speed doesn't have to be any higher just because you are playing a game. The only extra data being transferred is your mouse and keyboard control data which I would imagine is very small.
Nerdy Desi @ Sep 2nd 2009 7:10PM
Hopefully, this won't make you hate PC gaming so much Tmac. ; )
I hope OnLive succeeds, should bring a lot of people over to the dark side.
tmacairjordan87 @ Sep 2nd 2009 7:33PM
Depends on if it works for me or not, since I found out my real speed is only about 4-5 mpbs. Every online game I play though runs as well as it possibly can, no lag unless the server is acting up. Even WoW ran perfectly for me until my computer became crappy...but the connection was smooth as butter :\
Special Agent Steve @ Sep 2nd 2009 6:26PM
30+ mbs download speed, with an i7 CPU. Don't know what would hold me back, probably location.
eNrique @ Sep 2nd 2009 7:02PM
I think OnLive is all about latency.
Evi1d33d @ Sep 2nd 2009 7:28PM
If you have an i7 then you probably better off NOT using OnLive...
Special Agent Steve @ Sep 2nd 2009 7:57PM
@Evi1D,
I just realized your point :\. Still, I think it might be neat to try out.
Syril Ram @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:07PM
It doesn't matter what kind of computer you have. You don't even need a computer really all you'll need is good internet speed.
Nathan-DTS [Anti-Planeteer - Power of Anti-ness] @ Sep 2nd 2009 6:28PM
I've called bullshit on Onlive since the announcement. Now I can see if I was right.
Clay @ Sep 2nd 2009 6:29PM
I think they want testers with a variety of connection speeds... hence testing. I have an 8 Mbps connection but I don't necessarily think that will exclude me from the beta. Do I think it will work over my connection? No way. But I might get the chance to see how slow it is!
Nathan-DTS [Anti-Planeteer - Power of Anti-ness] @ Sep 2nd 2009 6:44PM
Good for you!
Nerdy Desi @ Sep 2nd 2009 7:10PM
I believe the minimum is 5mbps for 720P resolution.
whylekat @ Sep 2nd 2009 6:53PM
System Requirements please....
estomped @ Sep 2nd 2009 7:08PM
Minimum requirements are a GPU that can do HD video and that's it, or even SD if your connection is slow.
Marrvia @ Sep 2nd 2009 7:10PM
Can you watch an HD Movie on your computer? Then you can use this. All OnLive is, is a video stream but you can control the other end. All the hard work is done on OnLive's supercomputers.
whylekat @ Sep 2nd 2009 7:43PM
Allright, signed up. Thanks.
xFenixKnightx @ Sep 3rd 2009 12:12AM
Voted up for name and avatar. Awesome. =)
creiij @ Sep 2nd 2009 7:08PM
Would love to try this. 80/80 mb connection, to bad I live in Sweden
Nerdy Desi @ Sep 2nd 2009 7:11PM
Why must the U.S have crappy internet. : (
Special Agent Steve @ Sep 2nd 2009 8:06PM
Speak again. 100 mbs coming to U.S in October. Comcast offers 75 I think in some areas.
Nerdy Desi @ Sep 2nd 2009 11:15PM
Is it only Comcast or other ISPs like SBC/AT&T? I haven't heard of this.
I really don't want to get Comcast, stupid assholes with their 250gb cap, no matter which tier of service you get. So lets say my next door neighbor downloads 10gb, I'm still limited to 250gb? I can't use his excess bandwidth?
Jason Cartwright @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:50PM
Damn US only. Really want to try this out.
mynk @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:12PM
here in canada rogers offers a 150 i believe.
iluvmyzune @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:53PM
this thing has so much fucking promise
Llythe @ Sep 5th 2009 4:26PM
no cake for us Canadians...
ids @ Sep 2nd 2009 11:25PM
It just seems like a epic fail from the start. One reason is location. Not every place in the US has good broad band it just piece of crap that cost you a monthly fee
Nerdy Desi @ Sep 3rd 2009 12:06AM
That's the U.S's fault for being so damn large. : D
phillipsteak @ Sep 3rd 2009 12:30AM
haha my schools 60-80 mb/s should help me get in *fingers crossed*
Nerdy Desi @ Sep 3rd 2009 12:32AM
This service would also be great to try out PC games before buying them, as a "rental" service since PC games cannot be rented in the traditional sense.
cknblade @ Sep 3rd 2009 1:08AM
I don't even want to know how my 350 kb/s holds up....
