Study: Xbox 360 RROD on the decline
We're not sure there's a great way to write this post without you beautiful monsters turning it into flamebait -- nay, a flamesteak. We're just going to chuck it into the pit and then walk away in slow motion while the animals devour it. If we do it right, it should be very Guy Ritchie. SquareTrade, which claims to be the largest independent warranty provider in the world, has presented data indicating that the Red Ring of Death has been on the decline since the introduction of the Jasper chipset in early 2009. The findings were based on 16,000 new consoles covered by the company.
Well, that's great news! We don't think we're forgetting anything.Nope, we're all set. Well, we guess the report did say that the Wii was nine times more reliable than the 360 and four times more reliable than the PS3, but we can't imagine that's of much interest to anyone. [begin slo-mo walking]

I'll believe this.........when I don't see it.
maveric101 @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:37AM
the problem is it's going to be a while before we see any remotely conclusive numbers for the Jaspers. i mean, we're still not quite exactly sure of the failure rate of the previous revisions. anyway, i really hope the Jasper board (which i think was confirmed to be in the new Elites), for the sake of consumers (any myself) is much more reliable. and remember, just because you've had a Jasper fail doesn't mean they're just as unreliable as previous revisions. you're just one person.
also, lol @ the article.
d889 @ Sep 2nd 2009 12:29PM
the problem is we dont have ANY real numbers, these stupid reports everyone talks about are not at all conducted in a fair way.
all of these omg 50% failure rates were conducted using samples that skew the results, if you have taken any philosophy or psy classes you will understand how to conduct a real survey, and realize how important the sample is.
yeah my 1st gen box died on me, but that was arfter 2 years of solid use in a room that got well over 100 degrees during the summer ... and i got a new one for free in 1 week and its still running like a champ, i have absolutely no complaints.
Hue Jass @ Sep 2nd 2009 1:30PM
I always thought the RROD numbers were bullshit. The percentages always seemed way high, but now that I think about it all my friends, including me, are already on our 2nd Xbox. I guess it's true, or I just need more friends.
eXist @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:07AM
I hope that Microsoft sees this post of yours.

I concider my xbox a throwaway device and that makes me feel slightly better when it's burning hot to the touch. Its like a roll of paper towels, super expensive don't throw water on it paper towels... that plays games.
yeah, I feel better...
Ghen @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:12AM
I always misspell consider darn-it.
whylekat @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:18AM
I don't get it...
When are paper towels ever "expensive?"

Out of the 12 xbox360 owners I know... Non of them had any problems withen the past 3 yrs.
Out of the 2 PS3 owners I know... Niether of them buy any games for it & it rarely gets turned on.. They buy all their games for 360.
Haon @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:22AM
Bullshit.
PG @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:25AM
Are you suggesting that there isn't a problem and all this is some kind of urban myth?
I'm currently on my 7th Xbox 360, there is most definately a problem.
Foetoid @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:25AM
Wait what? You know every single person that hasn't had a problem with their 360??!!! MADNESS!!
Cyro @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:27AM
Dude that's impossible. Don't kid yourself. You know 11 out of those xbox's your friends own have died on them at least 2 times over the last 3 years and the other one is dying as I write this post.
Stteevvveee @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:29AM
Don't worry those 12 360 owners will be joining the millions, if not thousands, of RRoDs. Some of those ticking time bombs take awhile to go off. Some people get lucky and some literally go through 360's like its going out of style.
But it's okay. Microsoft likes to stiff us with the bill because general hardware failures are fault of the gamer not the company, because if people are having problems it's evidentially neglect of the console.
How the fuck do you get away with charging gamers to have their console fixed because of their shitty design?
-Signed the unlucky idoit who has gone through 3 different xbox's.
(You think I would of learned by now)
Jack_Jackington @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:31AM
i want proof you know people
whylekat @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:38AM
HAhaha it's no lie, ladies. That's just how it is.
I'm personally on my 3rd xbox, but as I stated before. Only 1 actually broke and it wasn't the RROD, the disc spinner stopped spinning. Or burnt out I guess.
Solace @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:47AM
-_-
PR0F3TA (PSN - PROPHETA) @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:50AM
so what you're trying to say is that RROD isn't the only defect?
Spinning drive malfunction?.... wow, no Thank You!
isotrex @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:59AM
i can't help it but lol @ your post whylekat. either you and your friends are lucky or you're just made out of pure bullcrap.
@topic
i guess we need an army of trolls with the capability to cast flames in order to keep this fire burning. that or we just need wood or gasoline.
whylekat @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:59AM
Geez dude, that happened 5 yrs ago and mainly because I played Oblivian for 34-36 hrs straight.
The Baron @ Sep 2nd 2009 10:00AM
16,000 seems like a very small sample size for something which might take up to a year to occur and may not even happen to everyone.
But 12.. well that's such a small sample that it MUST be true!
atx1980 @ Sep 2nd 2009 10:06AM
Its not bullshit. My old roommate used to sit and try and tell me how awesome his ps3 is. When it was his only console.
Got a 360 for Christmas and 6 months later sold his ps3.
The dust was melted to it from the moisture and lack of use.
Feedback @ Sep 2nd 2009 10:21AM
@Steeeveeeee
MS stiffingus with the bill? Hardly..they give extra warranty now remember...
whylekat @ Sep 2nd 2009 10:12AM
Well fella's believe what you will but it's all true.
And it seems I have to eat my words! 1 of the 12 JUST txted me that his xbox won't stay on! He said "it either freezes or turns off after about 5 minutes of use."
Ha! He's going out to buy an arcade right now!!
What are the chances, eh?
atx1980 @ Sep 2nd 2009 10:14AM
Buy it a walmart and return the broken one in the box.
I have heard of a lot of people doing that!
Orion @ Sep 2nd 2009 10:19AM

Holy crap, I just made myself look like an uneducated idiot.. reverse, reverse!!!!
whylekat @ Sep 2nd 2009 10:22AM
I don't think chance has anything to do with education..
Cody @ Sep 2nd 2009 10:51AM
whylekat is the 360 fanboy to my Nintendo fanboy, just like 10 times worse.
MaxPower @ Sep 2nd 2009 11:07AM
Hold on, it might not be bullshit. He didn't say if his friends ever played their 360s.
MaxPower @ Sep 2nd 2009 11:21AM
If you take the 54.2% failure rate cited in a joystiq article a few days ago thats a whole 0.00852% chance that 12 randomly picked people wouldn't have a failure...so theres only a 99.991% chance he's full of bullshit.
Wait I'm not doing this right, mmmm flamesteak nom nom nom. Bullshit bullshit!!! Your experiences don't fit with mine so nothing you say can be true. Rabble rabble rabble.
The Baron @ Sep 2nd 2009 11:38AM
MaxPower, I think I love you.
whylekat @ Sep 2nd 2009 11:48AM
Hahaha Cripers! Everything I said was totally true!!
I really hope we all have better things to do then spin tales about hardware failure rates on a low key video game news site.
Monkey King @ Sep 2nd 2009 12:15PM
"Geez dude, that happened 5 yrs ago and mainly because I played Oblivian for 34-36 hrs straight."
5 yrs ago? On a console that isn't even 4 years old yet?
whylekat @ Sep 2nd 2009 1:31PM
Typo. 3 yrs ago. =P
don't be so critical
Cutty @ Sep 3rd 2009 3:07PM
Yah, I had mine for almost three years before it red ringed. And I'm still on the 2nd one. And the first one was a launch console. I haven't had nearly as many problems as other people apparently. So yes, it's true, some people havent gone through 8 xboxs. Majority or minority, idk. I'm just saying you only hear about the xboxs that red ring.
Skaz @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:16AM
The 360 is also played about three more times than the average Wii.
Of course the more worn shoe is likely to have a hole in it.
yeah...
Foetoid @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:26AM
Mines played daily and been going strong since launch, tho the disk-reading noise has gotten louder compared to a brand-new unit.
Mr Khan @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:45AM
Hooray for making shoddy workmanship look like a good thing!
GewurztraminerX @ Sep 2nd 2009 10:06AM
I disagree, only because the average Wii owner doesn't own an Xbox 360.
GiggMan @ Sep 2nd 2009 10:12AM
Yeah Foetoid I notice that with my sons. It's louder than my PS3 and 360 but still kicking though.
robotoid @ Sep 2nd 2009 11:24AM
Oh I remember that music video.
