Users report Firmware 3.0 causing Uncharted freezes

We're contacting Naughty Dog to determine whether this is a known issue and to get an ETA on a fix, but in the meantime, considering that most of us have probably updated by now, our only advice is to find something else to play -- or make a game out of the freezing. Try to time it so that Nathan is in a funny pose!

Crap. I've been working on the platinum lately (Batman interrupted that). Hopefully this doesn't affect me.
ignfan69 @ Sep 2nd 2009 11:54AM
haha me too... I was on my first crushing playthrough till batman came out. I guess i'm putting this off for even longer now.
DeepFriedSushi @ Sep 2nd 2009 2:23PM
new OS probably increased the memory footprint and since uncharted was first party they probably utilized the ram probably to its limits.
Duke @ Sep 2nd 2009 3:50PM
probably probably did probably.
To the threat starters, yeah, Batman took over my game time too!
in_flamez99 @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:38AM
DAMN I was hoping to beat that in the next couple days
Miguel @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:50AM
Me too! I updated yesterday but didn't get to play at all. I hope this isn't true or if so gets fixed asap.
in_flamez99 @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:51AM
Guess I'll have to balance batman aa and uncharted.
danthaman15 @ Sep 2nd 2009 4:22PM
You guys think Joystiq has a fanboy problem? Go on to N4G for 10 minutes and then say that with a straight face.
in_flamez99 @ Sep 2nd 2009 6:32PM
I meant, i'll have to play batman aa and uncharted at the same time.
dark_inchworm (stronger than never, ever before) @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:38AM
Makes me wonder just how much tampering they do with firmware updates. I don't recall any of the 360 dashboard updates ever interfering with software, so it seems to me that the two companies take drastically different approaches to this sort of thing.
How sad is it that I'm deeply interested in the intricacies of a software update?
Azerael @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:42AM
Microsoft are used to making their software play nice with other people's stuff, that's the whole point of Windows, after all.
Sony are used to saying jump and being asked to specify the expected high of the jump. So it's probably up to ND to fix this, Sony will just pretend nothing's happened until someone wins a class action against them.
Archon (PSN: Archonik, XBL: DarkARHN) @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:43AM
Well, the update alters the way the in-game XMB looks. there may be a small resource management interference when playing Uncharted or a small memory leak under some rare circumstances, and voila. A game crashes after an update.
Tomheivers @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:47AM
Before you guys get on your high horse about this, 360 had the same issues in November last year, remember? Some people couldn't unlock Halo 3 achievements, or the console couldn't read discs.
These things happen, it's not a biggie, and it will be fixed.
PR0F3TA (PSN - PROPHETA) @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:47AM
its like a congregation of retards here... ND is going to fix this, Sony isn't going to get sued and MS's "plays nice" with other software is a good fucking joke, even more that you use Windows as an example.
as for the Jump reference i don't get it, try sounding less like a idiot and more like you actually know whats happening
dark_inchworm (stronger than never, ever before) @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:50AM
...why am I being downvoted, I wonder
joe_bevis @ Sep 2nd 2009 10:07AM
May I remind you of the trouble Microsoft has had with hardware in the past years
dark_inchworm (stronger than never, ever before) @ Sep 2nd 2009 10:10AM
That's not what I was talking about... at all.
Once again, the Joystiq masses fail me, and I am whited out by fanboy ignorance. Good grief.
sony boy (6 years til sony man child!) @ Sep 2nd 2009 10:18AM
maybe you should read tomhiever's post first before insulting the joystiq community.
dark_inchworm (stronger than never, ever before) @ Sep 2nd 2009 10:27AM
But I already made the remark, so isn't it too late?
But no, I did read that, and that probably is the most noteworthy post so far. I honestly don't recall the achievement gaffe, though.
GiggMan @ Sep 2nd 2009 10:32AM
Azerael,
I hate the type of people that come in here and try to correct others but I am afraid I'm going to have to be that person. You saying Microsoft, in particular Windows, "plays nice" with others is the funniest thing I have read so far today.
And then you imply that Sony is the exact opposite and doesn't "play well with others" yet they allow you to use standard USB cables to charge your controllers and swap hard drives at will.
LoL... And then to drive the point home you bring up Sony getting hit with a class action LAWSUIT! lol for what?
I never literally lol'ed before thank you Sir.
el serpiente @ Sep 2nd 2009 10:55AM
What do you call it when a fanboy trolls a thread, then after being downvoted to white calls everyone else a fanboy for downvoting him?
This happens so often, I think it needs a name...other than cognitive dissonance.
dark_inchworm (stronger than never, ever before) @ Sep 2nd 2009 11:05AM
So not yet owning a PS3 makes me a fanboy. I see, I see. Your feigned intellect continues to intrigue me, el serpiente.
I originally wanted to hold an interesting discussion on the matter, but that quickly turned to shit (due in part to myself, admittedly). For those of you who tried, thanks. Better luck next time.
Viney @ Sep 2nd 2009 11:05AM
It's called denial... with a dash of hypocrisy.
dark_inchworm (stronger than never, ever before) @ Sep 2nd 2009 11:07AM
For clarity, "not yet owning" does imply intent to eventually own
el serpiente @ Sep 2nd 2009 11:45AM
"So not yet owning a PS3 makes me a fanboy. I see, I see."
Hmm, is there a name for it when someone attributes an argument to someone else that they never made? Ah yes, the straw man argument.
"Your feigned intellect continues to intrigue me, el serpiente."
Aww, did I make you feel inadequate? Sorry if I made you look up the big scary words...
Heh @ Sep 2nd 2009 12:16PM
dark_inchworm isn't the type of guy to troll, I've seen him post for ages now. Cool it with the downvotes, you're making sony fans look like butthurt 13 year olds.
As for the subject, I'm sure this will be fixed within a day or two. Sony wouldn't let a problem like this go unfixed.
dark_inchworm (stronger than never, ever before) @ Sep 2nd 2009 12:19PM
I've been wondering where the hell you went. Obviously, I just never see your posts. >.>
Heh @ Sep 2nd 2009 12:25PM
"I've been wondering where the hell you went. Obviously, I just never see your posts. >.>"
I've been busy gigging all summer and really haven't had time to post here lol. College = moar time on pc = moar joystiq tiem.
The Baron @ Sep 2nd 2009 12:25PM
He never said anything bad about the PS3.. he just said (obviously out of interest in the subject) he didn't remember 360 updates ever doing anything like this, which turned out to be wrong. Maybe that is worthy of a downvote, but you all acting like he's frothing at the mouth pointing at Halo ODST and calling all Sony's exclusives crap is way more untrue.

jesus guys, dark_inch wasn't engaging in the kind of blatant trolling azereal below him is, and you are tearing this guy apart. focus your hate on the folks that are just fanboy baiting, not the ones who are simply musing about how a firmware update messes with a piece of software. discriminate appropriately, people! also, Uncharted is one of the best games i've ever played, and i hope this problem is fixed with the quickness.
sc00by_y00 @ Sep 2nd 2009 6:43PM
Hi Dark,
In answer:
Each firmware update is in essence changing the kernel of the operating system, for example to output to multiple audio devices they would have to change the driver / module for the sound card so that it can output to two ports simultaneously which would probably be kernel layer if its a monolithic kernel. The UI must be using up more resources (I dont like the grey in the friends it looks fugly - the rest of it is nice though) which might be having an impact on uncharted it could also be the sound changes which is some how causing an issue.
They could possibly have bundled in support for the moton controller and they said the motion controller will take up more resources (this might somehow be causing an adverse reaction with some games - but is likely because I would guess the developers are working with the same firmware).
In essence it is upgrading the os equivalent to installing a service pack in windows (sp3 broke a lot of windows xp machines, in fact Microsoft are notoriously bad at patching - No commercial entity would run one of their patches until the second service pack it broke the systems that badly)
apt-get dist upgrade equivalence in ubuntu :) (i love Linux, it just works )
Also as far as I know when the NXE was released it caused a string of freeze ups and some were saying that their 360s were rroding after the update, I am not sure on the accuracy of this though.
I am very surprised that it is causing this many issues, they must have been testing it for a while now, obviously something major they were not aware of.. Maybe when they update they can sort out the fugly friends list as well :)
dark_inchworm (stronger than never, ever before) @ Sep 3rd 2009 6:33PM
That's the sort of response I was hoping for. Some of it is readily apparent (to me at least, maybe not to everyone), but it was a compelling read nonetheless. Thank you. :)
Archon (PSN: Archonik, XBL: DarkARHN) @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:40AM
God, let's hope it's Uncharted only and it'll be fixed soon. I hate when fanboys go and blow everything out of proportions...
It's like the time there was like five single cases of the PS3 half-bricking after a major update. Everybody was like LOLPS3HASNOGAMESLOLBRICKAGE...
Archon (PSN: Archonik, XBL: DarkARHN) @ Sep 2nd 2009 10:36AM
Yeah. Just read the comments below me. Should have added: inb4 "the new update froze my freezer and fried my toaster"...
Also, my wife's period is late. Should have waited a couple days before updating...
sc7 @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:41AM
It also caused terrible slowdown for me in R&C:FToD cutscenes.
And inchworm, it's not sad at all, I too find it interesting. My guess is Sony, since their OS was so basic and it changed so much, were required to change some of the core of the OS.
Fane [A-MF Brigade] @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:06PM
FWIW I had those problems with R&C before 3.0, so it may just be the game. I also had a really bad instance of cut-scene slowdown in Uncharted (when Elena re-appears in part 3) after 3.0 (I just bought it, after the update), but thankfully no freezes. Touch wood.
Solace @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:44AM
I've not had a single problem with Uncharted since FW 3.0 and I'm using a BC 80GB PS3.
I bought the game 2 weeks ago and I skip the cut scenes though because I've already beaten the game once.
makimak22 @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:50AM
I had some freezing issues before (2.80 firmware). After the HDD install of RE5 the game failed to load. I just deleted the HDD game file, re-installed it again and it's fixed. Also recently after installing the WET Demo, my Bionic Commando game would freeze randomly (fixed by deleting the Demo). Maybe SONY just need to come up with a HDD clean-up or de-fragmenting tool.....
nrodnatedogg @ Sep 2nd 2009 10:15AM
Damn, this is causing Star Wars Force Unleashed to crash all the time as well. I deleted the saves three times and no luck. I'll try to delete the Wet demo and see if that works. I only got past the 2nd level and bam! Crash! Anyways, Uncharted is an awsome game, its wortht the money.
Pat @ Sep 2nd 2009 2:18PM
@ nrodnatedogg
Does Force Unleashed install any Game Data? I'm sure it does. Try deleting that instead. Start the game over and have it re- create that file. I'm certain that should fix it.
PSN: John-Paul-Jones (Led Zeppelin) @ Sep 2nd 2009 2:32PM
I don't know if this is the new firmware's fault, too, but I can't get past the part where the guy under the table runs away. It's just a black screen and it doesn't load =\
PSN: John-Paul-Jones (Led Zeppelin) @ Sep 2nd 2009 2:35PM

I'm talking about Wet if anyone hasn't played the demo before
sc00by_y00 @ Sep 2nd 2009 6:26PM
I installed wet hated the graphics urgh it hurt my eyes seriously thats what I call nasty. I died after 5 minutes of playing and it crashed on me the screen went blank I think black had to quit the game via the ps3 xmb and it caused my whole ps3 to restart, I instantly uninstalled the demo, its a shit game.
On the other hand I installed mini ninjas as well, I think I am going to buy it, its not the most impressive thing graphically but the demo was fun I think it could be really interesting.
PuBeLeSs @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:53AM
is this game worth 27.99 thats all i want to know, because im looking at uncharted 2. is the story needed?
The Baron @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:54AM
The characters are very well written and a lot of them are making reappearences in U2. It's definitely one of my favorite console games this generation. If that's in dollars then yes it is worth that, I paid 15 pounds sterling.
m3nphls @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:55AM
This game is totally worth the money. I kept thinking when the game came out that it sucked so bad until I played it this year and ooohh boy.... I regret not playing it when the game released.
Maulok @ Sep 2nd 2009 10:06AM
The game is fantastic... pubeless... *shudder*
The story is great, the characters and voice acting are top notch. It's a combination of tomb raider, gears of war, and Indiana Jones. And the production values rival Metal Gear. I cannot recommend the game enough. Not finishing the game is one of my greatest regrets, and one I plan to fix starting this weekend!
adolson @ Sep 2nd 2009 10:14AM
If you don't want to buy it, at least rent it and spend a weekend on it. It's only about 9 hours, and it was an excellent game.
DangerMouse @ Sep 2nd 2009 10:23AM
At that price, i'd say yes. It's a fun game, but it is rather short. it does have trophies, so you can go back through and collect them if that's your thing.
