Atari files Turbine D&D suit under 'frivolous'

Unsurprisingly, Atari has filed to dismiss Turbine's suit and, in addition, filed a secondary complaint seeking "monies" allegedly owed to the publisher by Turbine (as supposedly uncovered by a third-party audit). In its official statement, posted in its entirety on IndustryGamers, the publisher adds, "While Atari hopes for a quick and fair resolution, it remains fully committed to the D&D communities worldwide and will vigorously protect the franchise and its own integrity in this matter." Oh, by the way, did you see that Champions Online was released this week!

Atari rolled initiative.
dogmaticatheist @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:12PM
Sounds frivolous to me.
"Hey, no one liked our knock off fantasy MMO cash grab, so let's sue Atari."

I do not believe D and D is knocking off many fantasy games.
The free release won't run on macs with out parallels will it?
dogmaticatheist @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:31PM
It plays just like WoW = knock off.
dogmaticatheist @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:31PM
And what does it have to do with running on the Mac?
THE WICKER MAN (BWF) (GT: Dalek Prime) @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:03PM
Your comment could be read to imply that Dungeons and Dragons is "ripping" off a fantasy genre, when in fact it is a godfather of fantasy games. I was asking a question of users so as not to make multiple posts like you just did. :(
Coldbrand @ Sep 3rd 2009 8:26PM
Except for the part where DDO plays nothing like WoW.
Jerk Face @ Sep 3rd 2009 10:53PM
DDO is so unlike WOW that I can't even begin to take you seriously.
Jerk Face @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:12PM
I don't know the details, but DDO is the best MMO that no one is playing. If you ask me, Atari SHOULD be marketing it better. If you guys haven't played it, seriously check it out now that it's free to play. It's fantastic.
Storm Eagle [Resident Capcom Megafan] @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:15PM
The problem with the game is that it's still not free to buy....
Geist @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:18PM
Sort of free to play. Anyway, What I don't like about it is the necessity of grouping. Obviously that's what makes the game so awesome, when everyone has a very defined role in each dungeon, but still.
Though I hear that was changed recently? Eh. Still don't have time.
whylekat @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:23PM
@storm
oh man I have the same problem with majority of the games I own..
MATT @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:27PM
This is all just a marketing ploy to get people talking about that game.
Lurkero @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:37PM
That is a proper theory, but there are much easier ways to garner publicity. That makes it hard to believe. How many people would click on a D&D link if they didn't already care about D&D?
MATT @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:17PM
Well, I checked it out because of this news having never touched anything D&D before. Then again, I've been itching for a new MMO (fulfilled by Champions Online thankfully).
Ryoga Vee @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:38PM
Um.. I worked on this title at Atari a few years ago. My understanding was that Arari was ONLY the publisher and after its retail release they washed their hands of it and had no involvement in operations after that.
WINterfang @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:53PM
Great Shop guys, I almost miss it.
Spallit @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:33PM
"calling the Dungeons and Dragons Online developer's recent legal actions "frivolous" and "a great disservice to D&D fans and to the MMO community at large." "
Sounds like two parents fighting and Atari trying to get their kids on its side :)
