First Okamiden footage: it's Okami, but smaller

We're officially torn now. We don't want to trust an Okami game that doesn't involve Clover Studio, but Chibiterasu is unbelievably cute, and we want to own anything with his/her image on it. The game will be playable at TGS, and attendees will receive a free fan (with Chibiterasu on it, so see above for our opinion of the item).

D'aaawwww. Chibiterasu is super cute!
dark_inchworm (stronger than never, ever before) @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:12PM
It's so adorable :D
whylekat @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:17PM
If only they gave him anime eyes then he'd be the cutest evaaaaa!
dark_inchworm (stronger than never, ever before) @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:24PM
No... I believe it's reached cute overload as it is. Anime eyes would ruin it.
[ArchiGamer] @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:26PM
It's too adorable!!

D'AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
kopeth @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:37PM
I'm interested to see how to utilize the brush techniques. Glad to see the art style is the same.
Space @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:16PM
I would like to see a HD okami on PS3. I loved the first one but I can't go out and get a DS just for this.
SoshiKitai @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:21PM
Then get a DS for this AND other games. :P
kopeth @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:23PM
I don't know about playing this game on a huge HDTV. It took me a 30 minutes for my eyes to adjust to the art style on the wii...very trippy.
samfish (uses the Joystiq Comment-Kill filter!) @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:26PM
Seriously, there are like a million games in every genre on the DS. I'm sure you'd use it to play more than just this.
Jose @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:29PM
Prolly took some getting used to because the Wii isn't an HD console.
Upscaling PS2 games does not equal HD PS2 port. We'll see how Katamari does, but I want all my PS2 games to get the God of War treatment.
Space @ Sep 3rd 2009 6:56PM
I'm sure I can think of other games on the DS but I already spend my time playing PS3 games
Dummy00001 @ Sep 4th 2009 8:50AM
> I would like to see a HD okami on PS3.
Price of the game would be magnitudes higher than PS2/Wii version. You do realize that?
Perfecting all the art work into HD is one of a hell time consuming job. PS2/Wii/DS lower resolution helps to hide pixel-sized anomalies, which at HD resolutions would look bigger and uglier.
Too risky investment into the game with not so stellar sales. Probably at a later time - when vector graphics would reach consoles.
> I loved the first one but I can't go out and get a DS just for this.
... that's silly. Adventures are piles on DS.
DS(i) right now has probably largest game library. I'm not sure whether it has beaten PS2 yet, but if not it's getting there at steady pace. If you are gamer, that's the surest investment one make.
WINterfang @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:39PM
Is Okami Zelda with a dog?
Adv2k1 @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:41PM
it sort of is zelda with a dog.
The dungeon areas are more organic so it's not as blunt when your inside. A number of zelda elements are similar to okami, but you don't have keys or anything really.
Okami is SUPER JAPANESE. So average americans may feel alien even though the language is english it feels very unique and odd.
WINterfang @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:43PM
Can you talk to people, or in this types of games listen to them?
samfish (uses the Joystiq Comment-Kill filter!) @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:07PM
It's just like Zelda. You listen to people and they either give you clues, directions or ask you to go on a sidequest for them.
Roto13 @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:29PM
It's very, very much like Zelda. If you like Zelda, you'll probably like this.
sam @ Sep 3rd 2009 6:13PM
It's basically Zelda with a dog (actually, Zelda did that last time anyhow) but not quite as good and with a stupid combat system. (When you go up to an opponent it enters a sort of separate combat mode. It feels more like a 'real' RPG, which is a bad thing in my book; but it's not turn-based or anything, just odd arcadey fights. The weapons are really weird. It's generally annoying, but although it's harder than recent Zeldas, it's still not very hard so if you buttonmash you'll probably be okay. Bosses are present, but not as good as Zelda bosses.)
On the plus side, the drawing-spells mechanic is really cool when it works. On the minus side, the Wii version of this is stupidly bad at recognising what you draw. Hopefully the DS will be better.
Basically as for the Wii version, if you like Zelda you should probably get it. Don't expect it will be better; it's more original for sure, as you'd kind of expect from it being Okami 1 rather than Zelda 74, but not as good. 'Not as good as Zelda' still leaves it being a great game though.
I don't know about this DS one - DS games with first-person 3D often strike me as a bad idea but on the other hand, it's perfect for painting... I guess I'll wait for reviews.
HotLimit @ Sep 7th 2009 10:55AM
It's like Zelda, but fun. I'm not trying to be cute or anything, but if I wanted to push boxes around for hours I would have become a repo man.
Traceur_Ryuk (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:39PM
I want a fan :(
Hey I know! You guys could sneak in (like a ninja) steal all the fans and give them to us joystiq readers :D
Adv2k1 @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:45PM
I think the game will fit the DS better than any other console. I thought the wii pointer controls were clunky and didn't always recognize what i wanted.
Having it as touch screen will make it so much easier and strait forward.
That being said the game was to Japanese for me. I have no problem with the Japanese culture or different cultures however I just couldn't get into the story or characters because it felt so alien, so different than anything I have ever experienced.
Traceur_Ryuk (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:51PM
Ironically, it was better on the PS2.
MRLN the Amazing @ Sep 3rd 2009 6:02PM
I thought the painting on both were clunky, but less so on the Wii actually. Each to their own, I guess.
Leish @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:46PM
I'd tap it.
WINterfang @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:50PM

[ArchiGamer] @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:52PM
Umm, wow....
Matisyahu Serious @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:08PM
you know, tap on the screen to issue commands and such?
try to keep up people, things will be moving pretty slowly.

No, I'm pretty sure he meant he'd like to stick his dick up the puppy's butt.
Shagittarius @ Sep 3rd 2009 6:47PM
I'd hit it...with a newspaper.
[ArchiGamer] @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:47PM
.......I can't find words to fit how much I want this game.....
yomachaser @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:53PM
I was going to say something about my worry that the shift to ds might kill some of the okami charm ,but instead...d'aaaaaaaaaaaaw!
Solace @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:55PM
Puppy POWER!!!!
dark_inchworm (stronger than never, ever before) @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:15PM
Don't take too much offense to my downvote, but no one, not even anyone with good taste in women, is EVER allowed to allude to that abomination of a cartoon character!
Atr-Slzr-Ctr @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:53PM
What are you talking about?
Nick Frost @ Sep 4th 2009 2:42AM
It's a reference to Scrappy Doo. He was in one of the many versions of the Scooby Doo cartoon back in the day.
Now get off my lawn!
RobinEivets @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:58PM
Well, we must consider that clover studios is no-awwwww who's a cute puppy with artistic powers?! You are, you are!
Hashbrown Hunter (OneGiantCluster.blogspot.com) @ Sep 4th 2009 7:01AM
EXACTLY what I thought :P
samfish (uses the Joystiq Comment-Kill filter!) @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:06PM
Haters be damned, this looks freaking AMAZING, especially for a DS game.
It puts every other 3D DS game to shame, from what we've seen...although I'm concerned about how it'll control still, to be honest. I was really hoping for a primarily top down or 2/3 view above semi-permanent camera angle.
ALSO! I'm quite proud of the Joystiq havemind. There was hardly any bitching and moaning in the comments that this was a DS game and not a Wii or PS360 game...unlike nearly every other website.
WINterfang @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:07PM
I wouldn't say it puts the other games to shame, Phantasy Star Zero looks amazing.
RobinEivets (Soon to be Crimsic) @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:14PM
Wait, this isn't for a console?
Count me out, good games come from consoles, not tiny little handheld pieces of garbage like the DS (more like BS!) or the PSP (more like PP!). I've never tried a handheld game that I like. And don't bring up Scribblenauts, we all know it's coming to WiiWare/XBLA/PS Store next year. I'll wait till I can enjoy it then on the big boy gaming platforms.
Who's with me!?
Anybody...?
I have no friends.
flameofdoom666 @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:19PM
Have you seen Dragon Quest IX? Zelda Phantom Hourglass/Spirit Tracks?
While I love Okami- I wouldn't say it looks better than those. I also realize that the game isn't out and it is in a rough state. Maybe someday it will be the best looking DS game with a 3D engine- but as it stands right now, for me it isn't.
It is a looker though.
samfish (uses the Joystiq Comment-Kill filter!) @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:24PM
Phantasy Star Zero is really impressive, I'll admit.
I think Okamiden outclasses the DS Zelda games by a country mile, though.
I have no comment on DQ9.
SoshiKitai @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:31PM
I really hope you're joking, Robin...
The DS and PSP definitely have their rather... blah-games, but they do have several gems.
Either you've never truly tried a good game on either handhelds, never played any of the handhelds, or you have such high standards for TAKE-WITH-YOU-consoles that you're ridiculous.
I also really hope you don't fight back with a list of games you've played... because anyone can make up a list by looking it up on Google, and claiming they've played it with "evidences" made up from review sites and walkthroughs.
..unless all the games you list, truly are suckquake.
In that case, list away.
Roto13 @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:31PM
Cel shading is how you do DS 3D right. DS games should all either be cel-shaded 3D or just 2D.
samfish (uses the Joystiq Comment-Kill filter!) @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:33PM
Preeeeetty sure you're sarcasmometer is broken, Soshi :p
Well...I think. Maybe mine is on the fritz instead.
J-Link @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:46PM
I think the graphics will look great, I even like the way Final Fantasy IV looks on the DS, I thought the 3D was pretty good.
RobinEivets (Soon to be Crimsic) @ Sep 3rd 2009 6:07PM
Hmm...that's the first time I've been downvoted...I guess I need to start labeling my "sarcastic" comments. I plan on buying Scribblenauts on the 15th and honestly...why would you take anything refering to the PSP as the PP or the DS or the BS...those weren't even funny.
SoshiKitai @ Sep 3rd 2009 6:21PM
It's not about funny-ness...
It's about how people on the net actually talk like that.
:P
