So yes, prognosticator of all electronic entertainment Michael Pachter told Gamasutra that he expects Take-Two to release the fifth full Grand Theft Auto game in 2010. It seems far-fetched to us (especially with another GTA IV episode still in the pipeline). But, sadly, Pachter doesn't give us a lot to work with in the piece, so, in the absence of details, we're just going to assume he's right. Journalized.
One thing that's actually hard to argue about from the piece, analysts are overwhelmingly positive about Take-Two in 2010 with a bevy of big titles like BioShock 2, Mafia 2, Red Dead Redemption and several others. Does Take-Two even need a Grand Theft Auto next year?

Did this guy read comments from Joystiq and tell everyone it was his idea?
And, when did analysts start commenting on whether a game is coming out or not?
From what I know, analysts are to state the obvious to stock owners.

Liberty City to Vice City to San Andreas.
I don't see why they'ld break the cycle now.

As far as GTA V goes don't count on it. Though patcher is right Rockstar should be working on a new GTA IV (think GTAIII: vice city), but really who knows when it'll be released. Normally Rockstar has released these "expansions" about 2 years apart, but w/ the DLC, and things still being a bit crazy for T2 and Rockstar who knows what's going on there. I highly doubt even those working on the next GTA project can predict when their next retail game will ship.
Personally I think 2011 is a better conservative guess.

BioShock 2 will probably do pretty well for itself, or at least do better than the original (even adding in sales from the later PS3 version), since it's had 2+ years for good word of mouth to circulate. I don't expect much from Red Dead Redemption or Mafia 2 in terms of sales, but i could be pleasantly surprised.
Pachter is a businessman, after all, and he knows as well as pretty much everyone else that GTA is the only consistent moneymaker TakeTwo has got in pretty much it's whole stable, and that's why he says this has to happen. It won't, for reasons you all already stated, but it would be better for TakeTwo, financially, if it did

Its not unless Rockstar North passes it off to someone else, they are working on Agent right now. The next GTA will have to wait or it will be handled by another group of Rockstar devs.

I wish he was right but I doubt it. Sam & Dan Houser would never do this. More DLc episodes 2K10, sure. But not a new sequel. Everytime gta changes from numbers (not cities) they spike the features and look of the game ie the difference betwen III & IV. We might even see (or at least I hope) to see gta4: vice city (&hopefully set in the 80s again) TOPS!! But even that I doubt will be anounced until the end of 2010. I do agree though GTA 5 will come this console generation though as this gen will last longer than the previous.

I'd love to see another Chinatown wars or top-down view game. I think Chinatown wars PSP looks great and really returns GTA to its "roots"!

I thought GTAIV was a damn good game, the storyline, the art style, were good. The story did get a little crazy near the end but I would say it was pretty good overall. The characters are just like every other R* game, walking stereotypes which is totally fine by me. The thing that kinda got to me in IV as opposed to SA was that when I started playing IV, I felt like I should try to be more careful, obeying traffic signals and refraining from psychotic rampages through the city. It was almost like Liberty City was too nice to fuck up! The character was a bit more of a feel good story, immigrant coming over, etc... It wasn't until my first firefight when Niko screamed out, "you shouldn't have fucked with me.." that I thought to myself, "okay, now it's on." From then on, I played the game with a chip on my shoulder, it became a gritty action game, with a great looking environment and stereotypical yet likable characters, except when they blow your cell phone up every five seconds.
I liked GTAIV, some people say they took out everything that was fun in SA, I admit, going bat shit crazy is fun, but I can do that in Stillwater. GTAIV was meant to be more than mindless nerd raging with tanks, and apache helicopters, and I think it succeeded in that respect. What we got was a top notch game, from a great studio. I don't think anyone would ever say they regret playing it.
For the next game though, I hope they take me somewhere out of America, let me mix it up in Russia with the KGB, let me dive into the Sicilian mob underbelly, or the Chinese Triads. I am tired of New York and LA being the center of GTA. Vice City provided a relief because Miami in the 80s was sweet. I hope R* can take elements from all of the games so far and really deliver something awesome.

I'm witcha on this one. I L-O-V-E-D GTAIV. It's a masterpiece. For the next GTA, I hope they go with my idea of the option to play as 1of 2 characters from the start - A protagonist and an antagonist - with the game being loaded with moral choices that will either make u more good/evil or cross you over to the opposite side, giving you multiple potential story lines and endings as well as giving a heck of a lot of replay value, for those who are up to it.
I don't know if it's possible on the 360 but I know the PS3 can do it since Heavy Rain is somewhat fleshing out what I originally spoke about for GTA V. I say Rockstar owes us PS3 owners, big time, if we can't get the DLC for GTA IV so they should make it a PS3 exclusive and maybe if MS comes out with a system that uses at least Blu-ray and HDDs in ALL their SKUs, they can release it down the line for them.

A fifth full GTA IV game sometime in 2010?. I'm sure Microsoft will have bought the exclusive rights to that one as well. In fact I would not be surprised if they arranged a deal with Rockstar to have bought the whole future GTA franchise.
