A universal rating system doesn't necessarily mean that the FCC will control the entire rating system. A commonality between various rating institutions would be the route the FCC would take.

For example, In computers we know that even though there are difference companies, there is a commonality between the parts of a computer. All RAM chips fit into the same slot regardless of the company that produced it.

I hope someone understands what I am talking about.

This is the first time I have ever been first to post a comment. Its a good feeling, but it passes quickly. This probably won't happen for a while so I will try to enjoy it as much as possible. Adding another reply to this is aiding in my enjoyment.

Ya people automatically think the FCC or government will have control over it,which is illegal. However they could start the ball rolling and we having something like the ESRB. Frankly I think getting the ESRB to open and rate all media for a fee would be great since the ESRB is a lot better than the TV or film ratings systems.

DONT LINK TO HULU!

Seriously. International users can't view videos on Hulu and its really irritating to not be able to view the content that is linked to.

Those links are fine and dandy, but following them just to view a single link means disconnecting from the internet long enough to be shielded, and for a computer that's always on, that's a disruption in whatever might be running, or whatever you're doing, for an undetermined amount of time.
A major pain.

A universal ratings system (mostly) makes sense. It'd be clearer, more consistent, more wel known and more understood.

That it should be in the hands of the FCC is much less clear. And god-forbid that it ends up in the hands of the MPAA.

Actually, getting the ratings out of the hands of the MPAA is the best reason for having a universal ratings system. But if they have one, it'd have to be open and accountable... something not all existing systems are.

It's like the FCC is their own little Media controlling government. I don't really like the way they handle things. Too bad they didn't have their little fingers in everyones Kool-aid.

The other problem with those links is that hulu detects and block anonymous proxies so they don't work anymore.
