"I'm sure they could've made the battle rifle at least downloadable or something"

But then how could they manage to fit the Sgt Johnson textures in for people who pre-order the game... ;-)

Bungie, you've really let yourself down this time. Do not treat people like idiots.

This kid might be young, and he might be a bit of a BR whiner, but he's not an idiot, and he's smart enough to know marketing rubbish when he sees it.

Good for Conner! What he did took guts. What a BS response though... it takes him 10 minutes to say nothing.

1) The kid came off as a bit of a BR whiner, BUT he raised a valid point. A lot of people love the BR, so why isn't it included?

2) The first Bungie response was dreadful, and insincere, if not a flat-out lie. They can't afford the texture space for the BR, really? Yet they can include texture space for weapons that nobody will ever use?

3) The second Bungie response ("technically it's on the second disk") was even lousier. This was marketing BS at its worst. Good on the kid for pulling Bungie up on this one.

Clearly, the REAL reason the BR is not included is not technical at all. It's about branding. The BR is the go-to weapon of the Master Chief. The player is not supposed to be playing as the MC in this game (except of course, he really is for all practical purposes) so they force the player to use an SMG and a modified Pistol.

Bungie wrote themselves in to hole. By semi-retiring the MC at the end of Halo 3, they didn't have a main character that they could use in their little expansion pack. So what did they do? They made us play as the "ODST", who can, coincidentally, use plasma grenades, SPARTAN LASERS, missile pods, Banshees, rocket launchers and EVERY OTHER WEAPON THE MASTER CHIEF CAN USE.

Obviously, players play as the Master Chief in H3 ODST, with just a few minor changes to make it look as though its a different character. Still exactly the same game, though.

Regarding ODST itself, Bungie said the campaign would be about 8 hours, but asked everyone not to repeat that claim. Why shouldn't they repeat it? Answer: because it's not true. Have a look on YouTube: an experienced player on Normal, with a bit of exploration, will take about 4 hours to finish the game. Heroic is probably 5 hours or so. Add some hours if you want to stuff around, playing super-secret-covert-sniper guy.

Bungie told the truth a long time ago: this is NOT a "full game".

Sev writes:

"While I agree the weapons is very good if you know how to use it, like me and many other people, the fact is that it's too good."

Yep. There is no doubt at all that the BR is a good weapon. It's THE go-to weapon in Halo 3.

The problem is that it's FAR too good, relative to all other common weapons. This isn't saying anything bad about the BR. Rather, the poor design of so many of the other weapons. Plasma Rifle? Brute Spiker? Halo 3 Pistol? AR? Un-overloaded Plasma Pistol? All rubbish in comparison to the utility of the BR.

The BR is one of Bungie's biggest design mistakes. They made a weapon that pretty much negates most every other standard weapon in the game. Virtually every serious Halo game is dominated by BR players, and half the MLG crowd wouldn't even know HOW to use a Needler. They don't even PICK UP other weapons.

This, unfortunately, is very bad for the game overall. Most ranked Halo fights online are one-dimensional BR contests, where your ping is as important to the outcome as your BR skills.

So, in some ways, good on Bungie for removing the BR from ODST. And good on them for removing dual wielding, too.

Now, if they could have only added some actual innovation to ODST, like new weapons (sorry, a modified pistol and SMG do not count as new weapons), new enemies, new vehicles, etc.

i dun really think tis guy's question is commendable. heck. i classify it as whining. it's the exact same thing that has been gone through at bungie's forums. and seriously the only reason this guy is asking is because he probably uses the BR exclusively like most of the so called "pro's" learn to use a different weapon damnit

The BR is the odst's main weapon....

As for why they removed the weapon I completely understand it, and their actual answer seemed more like a brush off. I think the true reason it was removed was simple because campaign with br isn't that fun, in the right hands you simple walk through campaign with it and I'm assuming they want people who play it to experience a tad bit of variety and not have the same feeling of playing through halo 3's campaign.
