@Chris: Oh, c'mon! You discount him in School of Rock? I mean, the other two, I get (especially Nacho Libre... urgh, awful), but School of Rock was great! He was also good in the Tenacious D movie and Peter Jackson's take on King Kong.

I'd have to question why games include options to disable gore / language / etc. If the mature content was included because the developers felt the game wouldn't be the same without it, then disabling it would hurt their vision.

On the other hand, if the developers feel it won't hurt their vision to have you disable the mature content, then why is it there in the first place? Only because then 8 year olds will go "Cool, his head exploded - I need to buy this game!"?

I don't see how it hurts their vision if its only an option; you can still play the game and pretend the setting don't exist, like Gears of War. I believe you also get a performance boost from disabling gore on PC games...

From what I've seen on the Double Fine forums, Psychonauts has a lot of teenage fans whose parents might not let them play M rated games. If they tell their parents about the filter, they might be able to get permission to play it.

People who play videogames, enjoy exploding heads *and* prodigious use of F-bombs may also enjoy the company of their children, younger siblings, nieces, nephews, conservative grandparents... hence, family-friendly settings. A good chunk of developers have families and can appreciate this.

I'm not even sure why this feature would confuse people. We're not all playing in isolation pods, there's a time and a place for M-rated content.

It seems like the game was built for those 15 years old and up. However since the ESRB doesn't have an equivalent rating they chose M over T, otherwise they would HAVE to minimize the language and violence. So it ends up being a M rated game made to be compatible with a younger audience.

There's a difference between what is essential to a vision and what's supplementary. Presumably, the developers' ideal vision includes the cursing and blood, but but they don't regard it as so vital to the experience that the game would cease to be worthwhile without it. In that case, there's no reason to make the perfect the enemy of the good- better people play a somewhat adulterated version than not play it at all.

It's okay to have an unpopular opinion, but at least explain yourself, eh? That's what separates trolling from trying to have an honest discussion (or at least part of the difference)

I wonder if they'll just use "beeps" when choosing the censored version, or if they replace the "naughty" words with other, less offensive terms. Seems to me the "beeps" would be funnier.

My Mormon / LDS friends like to play Halo, GTA, Gears of War, etc., but find the language annoying. It's easy to have a higher tolerance for violence than language.

Good. Any game with half-decent writing will include a language filter. Perfect Dark did. Gears of War did.

I missed two games I REALLY wanted to play because they didn't offer a language filter option. These games are MadWorld and The House of the Dead: Overkill.

I don't want to hear that language in my games. It's ignorant and offensive.

@freaparn
If it's a social game, then, okay, I can see your point. However, if it's a single player game, I don't want anyone in the room with me, bothering me. Plus, if it's a game that features a lot of mature themes, you probably don't want a kid watching it, period. Heck, I think a game like Gears of War, even with the gore and language disabled, still wouldn't be appropriate for a little kid.

@Leroy_Rocktopus
Unless there's an option to lock out the gore with a parent's password, what's the point? The minute the parent leaves the room, the kid will just turn back on the option. If he or she is mature enough not to do that, then he or she is probably mature enough to play the game uncensored.
