It was the predecessor of the N64, after that they wanted to go with the X64 but the xbox came out. It'd be confusing

The vast majority of C64 games were crap...there were some that totally ruled in the context of the time period in which they were released. Now try and play them on a tiny screen with some crappy touchpad interface instead of an actual joystick and keyboard....sound likes a huge bag of suck right there. Just another waste of money on the iPhone. Most of the apps and games are shit like this that are impulse buys that never get used after the first few minutes of toying around with them.

i'm amazed at what you people know. c64, as in commodore 64, an 8 bit computer that was released in 82. not that I was around, but I it was the beginning of computer games, and consoles as well, as you could plug it right into a tv with the normal cables.

Well, even your info is wrong. First, the C64 never was a console...it was a home computer, albeit a cheap alternative to a real computer at the time. Also, there were numerous other home computers that had gaming such as the Atari 400 or the Apple II...get your shit straight before you start lecturing people on the history of video games and home computers.

"an 8 bit computer that was released in 82." it functioned as a console to many, however, as they played games on their tv through it, the definition of a console. and I never said it was the first, but it was one of the first platforms for computer and "console" gaming

A computer is not a gaming console you idiot...and yes, you implied that it was the forerunner. Read your post again you moron.

Wait, my C64 couldn't be hooked up to a tv. It wasn't a console. It was a computer that required a MONITOR.

There was no coxial connection or red, blue, white cords. Heck, mono was still instyle and stereo was almost unheard of. Just a 15-sub port for hooking up to a monitor. Heck, the sound card produces 'tones' only. It produced only a limited range from like 200hz to 16KHz but only a single tone at a time.

Music was like 'high tone, low tone, high tone, low tone, pause mediu, ,high, lowl ,meidum.

It seems to me like mars' original comment was pretty much spot on. The Commodore 64 was the first computer that I ever had. I got it to write programs on...but used it quite often for games. That's where I played Ultima III, for example (and Jumpman Junior, the various Electronic Arts games, Archon, and many many others).

It essentially functioned as a console for me (along with my trusty Atari 2600). In particular, not only did it plug directly into a television as mars said, it also didn't have the sorts of configuration issues you had to deal with when moving to DOS-based PC games. When you bought a game for it you knew it would work, just like consoles today. It also used a joystick, unlike most DOS-based games back then (which were all about the keyboard).

I certainly wouldn't want to go back and play those games now, but I will always heart my Commodore 64 (and the start it gave me in programming).

@wes:

Perhaps you had something other than a Commodore 64. From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commodore_64):

"Part of its success was because it was sold in retail stores instead of electronics stores, and these machines can be directly plugged into an existing home television without any modifications."

Dated? Well, of course it's dated -- the system released in 1982.

What I meant was that some games hold up to the test of time and are still enjoyable today, even tho they released 15+ years ago.

These games, however, look dreadfully unentertaining.

That's why it costs $5 instead of $60. I'm certain that the C64 app is meant to conjure feelings of nostalgia, not awe.

C64 was great in the day - especially for those of us that had VIC-20's - we did a lot of programming on C64 - and the games were great! Epyx Summer/Winter Games, Impossible Mission, Spy vs. Spy, etc. - I loved Commodores!

I got it right when I heard the news a couple days ago. The app is well-written. I've been getting a kick out of Jupiter Lander and all the built-in support for future updates looks promising. Love the keyboard/joystick options; they look great.

Impossible Mission on the C64 is the greatest game ever made. I still play it in 2009. Considering it came out in 1984, that's some pretty diamondcore VFM right there.

Just because the c64 was revolutionary, is no reason to bring back those craptastic games. And don't lie...everyone took a part their c64 in about 91...in attempts to build a time machine...
