the Japanese one or the US one?? I mean the US one is good I think as it goes at the fact they had leaks....even tho people who dont follow G4 or Gaming sites like that may not know just how funny it is for that reason

That commercial is weird. The American one is pretty good though. I like how Sony is poking fun at the price drop leaks.

It's a great start, but the real question is where it will stick when it lands off this high. That'll be what Sony's really looking for.

The right amount of momentum could give them control of the Japanese holiday season, and they certainly have the tools to keep it rolling

well with FF13 coming out in a few months my guess is it may drop off a bit then spike again the week of that release

That's what i get for reading the stories from the top of the page first. I didn't catch that before i wrote that.

No, the december date for that is not going to help them with momentum in terms of the "broader" holiday season, but it will still make for one helluva holiday there (especially since the later weeks of December are the big shopping weeks in Japan, not like America where you have to have something out by mid-November if you want it to make "the holiday season")

Most intersting...Now when FF13 comes out My guess is PS3 Sales in Japan for that week will top 400-600k as LONG as they have that many out in stores....and then if GT5 does manage to come out this year there as well....sweet Jesus....

Then lets look over to the US....we will see a TAD of what the Slim sales did for the last week of August but it wasnt Advertised until the OFFICIAL date of September 1st.....so my Prediction for the month of September for PS3 Sales is 500k.....going up to 600k in October....staying there for November then jumping up to 1.5 Million for December (if stock can meet demand) and yes thats just for the US...

GT5-inspired sales may not be as great, because Prologue has been out for so long, so many of the GT fanbase may have already bought a PS3.

Final Fantasy first-week PS3 sales will be greater, since Square has been very negligent in terms of PS3 support thus far, so outside of the Advent Children demo, SE fans have had no reason to buy a PS3 as yet.

Well thing is GT5:P is maybe 1/3 of what of the FULL GT5 will be...so any TRUE GT fan will most certainly still snatch up the real thing when it comes out.....

No, what i meant was that true GT fans may have already bought a PS3 for that game. Sure they're going to buy GT5, but they already have a PS3 for GT5

the reason its that big is because the average Japanese consumer is FAR more advanced techwise and NEW of the upcoming Slim and Price drop....more so than your average consumer in the US or EU....I wonder what the increase was year over year

it's going to be next-to-impossible for them to catch up to 360, quite honestly. That 8 million lead is just going to be really tough to surmount at this point.

This article failed to quote the original Japanese report about the sales period counted for the data. It's 8/31-9/06. Now remember SLIM went on sale in Japan on 9/03 (NO early jump start like in the USA). So the 152,530 figure is actually the result of 4 DAYS of sales.

Also the previous week's figure is very low because the previous PS3 has been out of stock in most of Japan for a couple of weeks already.

Finally, the launch date figure of 88,000 over 2 days also failed to take into account the supply shortage of PS3s at the time.

The PLAYFACE ads in Japan is actually a competition SCEJ is running. To capture everyday gamers' expression on camera and later open for online voting to find a winner.

Considering the 360 has a year or more head start over the PS3 then Sony have done incredibly well (even considering the higher price until recently over the competition) to catch up with the figures showing active PS3's we see today.

Also, sales do not represent a better console. In terms of longevity and downright power/flexibility then the PS3 is the clear winner. People whinge and say the 360 has better graphics, but this is only as a result of programmers having the head start with the 360 before PS3kits were released to games companies. Granted, it's more difficult to program for but companies like Naughty Dog say it pays off (and you just have to look at Uncharted2 to see this!) - thus any games company who consider it too difficult are probably just being lazy.

Uncharted 2, GT5, FF13 (and FF14 - ps3 exclusive), and GOW3 are just some of this games that will continue to boost the sales and image of the PS3.

The slow tortoise is the ps3 and the hare is the 360/Wii. My money is on the PS3 to come out on top.

game companies being lazy vs. game companies spending more millions of dollars and more time to learn the Ps3 ""better''' wouldn't go really well in a video game market that is already very hard to succeed in. most video games that release never turn a profit and lose much money on the investment. even great games some of the time.

naughty dog is a sony 1st party, owned video game developing company which gets its money and resources from sony which developed the ps3 console. sony sees a greater value in spending this greater amount of money and time with its 1st party developers, while 3rd party developers havent really dont this yet. It is easy too see why when they sell more copies of their games on the 360 and wii consoles year after year. video games are about business and money to the people who publish them.
thats why the god of wars, gran turismsos, and such will ususally be the best games on the ps3 along with other 1st party games.

and sony has a lot of great things going for them now.
but it will be hard to ever catch up to nintendo this gen. just to big of a gap and the wii still sells well.
MS and nintendo will be onto their next consoles by the time sony will catch up to them IMO, so they may be starting on a new gen within a few years from now.
cathing up 8 million consoles to MS and whay 30 million to nintendo will not happen within 1 or 2 years because MS and nintendo will continue to also sell consoles.
but with enough consoles out there i feel there is room for all 3 companies to see profits this generation, which is what really matters for them to be confident and continue to research and develop new products.

maybe with a $ 200 ps3 down the road sony can pass 100 million consoles this generation also like the ps2, by 2016 or something...

At GameStop, it's supposed to trade for $250. Thing is, many retailers have the permission to deny trade-ins by giving away a free copy of some of the PS3's games (MGS4, inFamous, Killzone 2, etc) to discourage the customer from doing a trade-in. Joystiq and Kotaku had articles about that since last week, I believe.
