Yes, the 999% week-to-week sales increase that the PS3 reportedly enjoyed in the UK, after the release of the PS3 Slim, may seem a little ... astonishing, but we'd like to help you make sense of the sequence of events.
1. First, NOBODY bought a PS3.
2. Then, EVERYONE did.
It's great news for Sony, but terrible for the PS3 executive who promised to come up with a way to increase PS3 sales by 1000 percent. Better luck next time, Mr. Former Director of Cross-Budgetary Marketing Promotional Strategy.

Nice comeback Womble, good to see you've not disputed any of the facts I presented, nor backed your argument up with any kind of reason other than 'you're a fanboy'.
In case you'd forgotten, the PS3 branch of this site used to be called PS3Fanboy. I was quite happy reading that news actually. What you're saying is "Sure, the news here is bias but if you don't like it you can always go somewhere else". The problem, Womble my friend, is that so much of the US based gaming blogs are also bias, so where does one go?
And for the record, this isn't a Sony press release, nor was it sourced from a Sony press release. It's data that has come from an independant UK company that monitors and reports on sales of music, video and software via retailers' EPOS systems.
Not that you OR Joystiq seem to care for accuracy.

Fine. Whatever.
Feel free to leave. There's no shortage of gaming news sites, including many that are definitely biased to the PS3. Go find one, make yourself happy.
The "bias" claim is hilarious. Do you really know just how much mail Joystiq gets from 360 fans saying the site is biased to the PS3? Answer: lots.
Commercial entities do not think like fanboys. Their bottom-line is hits, converting straight to advertising revenue. Your bottom-line, however is "how does this affect my perception of my choice of console"?
A problem which can be solved in one of two ways: (1) go read a different site, or (2) buy yourself a 360 as well as a PS3.

Might be entertaining to go bcak to some of the articles written about the PSD3 in its first year

First off - all your idiots not getting what Archon wrote - it was a comment to the title if this article! The sign "%" means percent - so when they write 999% percent, its percent percent - or 0.999%
So guess what - it you and not him who are stupid, and the comment has a lot more relevance for the article than your flame has!
Also, if NOBODY bought a PS3 - it should be infinite percent - at least one should have bought one :)
The best country in the world btw. That is Denmark - we are the most happy people in the world anyway - more than one study says that =)
When all this is said - im happy I have my old original PS3 60GB 4xUSB and PS2 compatible - it is just so much prettier - you just have to dust it off sometimes =)

Unsurprising jump in sales thanks to the price cut. I'm actually thinking about being one of the proud owners of a PS3 - there are a few games I want to try...but I'm divided on whether or not I should get a used 60GB w/ hardware based PS2 emulation, or get a slim PS3. Has anyone got any advice on the quality of the upscaling properties of the PS3, hardware or software based? I'm struggling to find any conclusive commentary about the quality of upscaling...

Wow that's pretty amazing. If only Sony did the price cut from the beginning and dropped the propaganda bullshit they would have a billion sales.

Well I've been a Sony critic of late, but even I'm tempted by the PS3 now. That is a BIG leap in sales tho. Is someone massaging the numbers?

It's at 999% because that's as high as Chart Track measures an increase by a percentage. It was actually around 1100%, or so I hear on the infomation superhighway....

I'm 999% sure that the Joystiq writers are clueless cretins. They seem to think that during the last 2.5 years the PS3 has not been selling very well, yet the reality is it's been selling great guns, and is doing an very good job of closing the gap on X360 sales, even though it used to be at a much higher price point.
Where can I go to get gaming news, where it's not written by clueless cretins that call themselves gaming journalists, yet clearly can't see the obvious and get so heavily sucked in by the Microsoft anti-PS3 propaganda...
I would get my gaming news from Kotaku, but they are equally as clueless...
Joystiq writers, have a read of this, before you embarrass yourselves even more.

Those are the cool hard facts, with real numbers... Don't you feel silly? You should do...

This isn't really news. PS3 sales fell 990% after the slim announcement and then rose 999% when it was released. It's still good, but common sense, not news

Does this include people that bought a PS3 the month before and then returned it in exchange for a slim once it was released?

I'm still a little surprise the ps3 sold as much. It doesn't seem to get that much support from GameStop. Has anyone walked in I GameStop lately, the front wall was decorated with everthing 360 (360 price drop, bundles, the Arcade and ODST) and then there was one little sign that said ps3 $299.

Yah i think thats because the retail sellers get a bigger commison on 360 than PS3.

gamestop makes much more money on the 360 than the ps3.
consider how many more games there are the 360 and how many more used games sales they have accumulated from the 360. i think there are over 100 games found on the 360 and not the ps3.
tens of millions more 360 games have been sold in total compared to the total number of ps3 games sold.
8 million more 360 consoles have been sold than ps3 consoles.
how many xbox live $ 50 cards has gamestop sold in the past 3 years? etc...
gamestop if the US # 1 game retailer and they make more money from the 360 now and its easy to understand why they market the 360 more..
its not a conspiracy or because they profit more on a 360 game sold vs a ps3 game sold..
they have just sold a lot 360 products than ps3 products.

k we know sales are lower than before.
but these numbers are impressive.
great timing sony, your holiday ps3 sales may double now.....
hell i thought about getting another ps3 for the bedroom, before i would think of getting a 2nd 360 at home.
i might just wait a year or 2 longer for the $ 200 ps3..... which will come eventually. its not like i need a 2nd ps3, especially when there's a ps2 in that room...

Yea, posting the actual sales numbers would be nice but, hey, this is what I expected. Numbers in Japan are up, mucho, and we'll soon hear how the numbers in the US jumped immensely. I said it a looonnng time ago - If the PS3 gets down to around $299, WATCHOUT!! But all I got was a bunch of hate from 360 trolls since I also said that the pricepoint was THE main reason why the 360 was ahead of the PS3 NOT the games, like idiots all seemed to think.
Most people tend to go for the lowest common denominator - Cheap prices. However, the PS3 out of the box value was and is even more so, now that the price has dropped, unmatched.
The real thing that makes me happy about this is that maybe now that the install base has increased by such a large fashion, devs will go harder at devving games that actually utilize the PS3 capabilities and disc/storage space. Tired of getting shortended when it comes to multiplatform games. Just like devs are devving games specifically for the Wii, they should do the same for the PS3. All consoles are definitely not created equal and Sony's first party games (except that damn NBA crap they mercifully decided not to release this year) and exclusives should definitely prove that point.

What a shame for you that Sony, the WSJ, GameStop, EA and pretty much everyone who has held off buying a PS3, disagrees with you.
PS3 sales have been poor, with a downward trend.
The Slim will hopefully reverse that.
Fanboys, however, are always operating in reverse.
