I've never seen a Star Trek episode in my life (I know, Nerd Fail), and reading Griffin's description of the space combat almost sold me. In fact, the only things holding me back here are the fact that I don't own a gaming PC, and that I have too many games to play to afford getting addicted to an MMO.

I hope it's not just that, but exploration has been a huge part of Star Trek. I'd be surprised if they didn't have player-made structures, resources to collect and the rest of the galaxy to explore.

And then there's the Borg, oh joy.

The Obsidian Order itself wasn't that great -- Garak and Tain (and 8 lubak) were all that made it interesting.

Whereas the Tal 'Shiar is interesting in and of itself.

Sweet mother. I've totally been waiting to actually shout "DIVERT POWER TO FORWARD SHIELDS" for a hell of a long time.

And damn, my roommates are gonna get sick of the word "Engage."

Then you should've played the Starfleet Command series. There was a lot of diverting power to various shields there.

Also a lot of bugs, unfortunately.

Yep! I've never been a fan of using the whole mic and headphones to "talk" to my guildmates in the past (I'm old school I guess). But I just might start using it for this :)

My issue with the game as it's designed is the fact that I don't want to be the captain of a starship. I want to be a red-shirt, beaming down to a planet, odds stacked against my coming back to the ship as anything other than a pair of smoking boots... I'd like to be on a starship with other people, not AI. I'd like to figure out what the heck Spock was looking at when he looked into that binocular setup at the science station.

But I don't want to be the captain. Every game lets you be the captain. I want something more like Star Trek, with walking down corridors and putting out fires in engineering and telling the captain, "I canna do it, she just doesn't have enough power!" That's how I see Star Trek. Star Trek has always succeeded on good stories, not its space combat, and certainly not on away-missions.

Of course, I'm sure they had to let everybody be a captain when they realized that there was no way they could get people to comply with the orders of a superior officer, and so they had to make it into a game that I have no desire to play.

Umgawa,

A well thought-out argument against the game.

While I am stoked to the gills for the game, I can appreciate your gripes. They make sense.

As a certain science officer might say: "Logical."

"You can just as easliy swap out these AI-controlled teammates out for other player-controlled captains in your team -- in fact, you'll probably need to in order to conquer the higher-end encounters."

That part leads me to believe that you can swap in even as a "captain" to control various systems.

It would be fun to possibly be one of the command crew and fire the weapons etc. As long as they made a "game" out of it. Plenty of games provide rewarding experiences for support characters.

Hopefully they'll take a cue from Phoenix Wright and have a key specifically mapped to turn on your microphone so you can shout "ENGAGE" to make your ship hit warp speed.

I popped my request in to get into the beta since I missed Champions Online. I'm by no means a Star Trek fanboy but I know enough of the series to like appreciate the MMO. Glad to hear that it's been getting some positive press so far and I hope to dive into the beta some time.

Though I wonder if the galaxy can handle the influx of redshirts named "Ensign Ricky" "Stan" and "That Guy."

P.S.: On second thought, I'd jump on the name "That Guy" myself more than likely.

Yes, but instead of invisibly dangling from an overhead gargoyle and nailing enemies with your grappling hook, you invisibly hide with your cloaking device and then nail enemies with a tractor beam.

I never played Bridge Commander, but this preview does seem to hint at some overlap with Starfleet Command. Sounds like a simplified version of the firing arc system and shield system (and certainly a broadside tactic for a Federation ship is not like Starfleet Command), and the power management seems somewhat familiar.

It's academic to me at this point, since I don't have a gaming-capable PC around, but I'd be pleased to see a good version of Star Trek-style space combat emerge into the world. I thought the Starfleet Command series did okay, but had some fatal flaws.

You know, I feel bad that FF14 is coming out, but I get to micromanage power usage and out-maneuver enemy vessels in a dramatic lethal light show in SPACE?!

(Anyone remember space combat in Star Wars Galaxies? 'Cause this looks WAY more awesome.)

Wow...I've been waiting for this title tentatively and I've already been afraid that this game is going to eat my life and soul in a way that trounces Elder Scrolls and Wow (in the early days). Thank Sidd I'm not a student anymore because I would quite simply fail every class if I had this game at the same time.

I can't wait to really dive into this Leviathan. Yes, I'm a fanboy. Even the 'every-other' crappy movie and some 'meh' versions of the show have not soured my ardor.

My issue is that my only interest is the original series. That's it. All the lore added by the series after that don't matter or illicit any sort of response from me. I don't like Next Generation, I don't like any of the other series, and I in fact hate a couple of them.

So I'd rather not join a universe that is more likened to that of Next Generation onwards. If there was a chance to cater to TOS fans only, then I'd be excited, and might buy it as the review is so certain I would.
