EA marketers send Joystiq a $200 check and we save their souls
140
EA's been slowly ticking off the levels of Hell by way of marketing stunts for the upcoming God-of-War-em-up Dante's Inferno. The first circle of Hell is "Limbo" ... and though we're not sure, the E3 "staged protest" was an early Dante's Inferno marketing stunt, so maybe limbo? Next is circle two: "Lust." Cue the controversial Comic-Con "Sin to Win" stunt wherein one "lucky" winner received "a night with the hottest girl at Comic-Con." Yeah, that didn't go over so well. Next up is "Gluttony." To celebrate the third circle of Hell, they mailed our own Randy Nelson a severed limb cake. We didn't reward them with a post for that one.
However, the latest stunt is a little more creative. They've mailed this editor, and presumably the editors at several other media outlets, a check for $200. The packaging says that "by cashing this check you succumb to avarice by hoarding filthy lucre but by not cashing it, you waste it, and thereby surrender to prodigality." If your SAT dictionary isn't at arm's length, that last one means wastefulness. So, we either cash it and "succumb to avarice" or burn it and be wasteful. What's an ethical gaming blog to do ...
... how about this? How about we cash it, and donate all $200 to The White House Project, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization "that aims to advance women's leadership in all communities and sectors – up to the U.S. presidency – by filling the leadership pipeline with a richly diverse, critical mass of women"? Of course, we'll make the donation in EA's name. It won't make up for Sin to Win, but the road to redemption's got to start somewhere, right?

I'm all for women's rights and equal opportunity but actually men have lost more jobs during this recession. Shit, at my job 90% of the managers and office people are women, which doesn't make it bad on the eyes but I need a promotion too!

Cash it and spend it on goodies. You're helping EA rid themselves of THEIR greed. Madden '14, anyone?

well done! Over at Kotaku they burned the check (as in handing EA their money back) I commented that cashing it and donating it was much better. so kudos!

Donate it to a studio that makes original games and doesn't rip off its customers.

yes, EA rips us off. We pay $70 for EA games, while everyone else only charges $60. Everyone else gives out free downloadable content for their games, while EA charges us for everything. Damn them. Oh wait.
EA may have a horrible marketing team, but they are still a very good company and don't rip anyone off. Burnout, Fight Night, and Battlefield BC are some good examples of how they "rip us off", right?

Alright, yea, mirrors edge was great.
Dead Space though? It wasn't a bad game, but that's just because it was Resident Evil in a space skin. Hardly original.

Like others have said: Give the $200 to Child's Play - not some political organization.
As I said over on Kotaku, it would've been amazing if EA had sent these out before PAX, and every member of the press that received one presented their check as a donation to Child's Play - It would've been EPIC.
But obviously that can't happen, so c'mon, give it to Child's Play so all of us (or most of us) can feel good about where the money is going!

You realize by not blurring the routing and account numbers you've given the world access to EA's bank accounts. I deem all your sins forgiven. :P

Wow, that project/charity actually sounds more condescending to women than helpful, if they're right for the job why do they need some obscure charity to fund them to help them get to the top? "Positive" discrimination is still discrimination guys.

I knew it! Proof that Joystiq is getting paid for their coverage!

How about keep the money and give the game a shitty review?

How 'bout this:
Cash it, buy 3 copies of Dante's Inferno when it comes out, then give away the copies to three random posts on the fourth (read: glutony) day or week after the game is released.
I will gladly accept one of the 3 copies for this FAT idea and won't have a problem sleeping at night either (I know you are worried...)

What a stupid fucking waste of a charity. Sorry, but it is. I wasn't aware it was the 1830s. Hate to tell you but there's, oh, thousands of better charities than that.

It doesn't even have to be game oriented. ANYTHING. The local children's hospital, Habitat for Humanity, the local Food Bank, the SPCA, World Vision, the local Mission...something that will help those less privileged. This charity sounds like it helps already somewhat privileged women become more privileged.

Cash it, and give the box (with $200 cash) away in a contest.
You take the fruit from heaven but give it away, therefore cancelling out the greed...

If I were them, I would not be cashing that! I mean, I wouldn't take it at all seriously, but that thing looks amazing! I would like put it in a glass case or something, seriously! It should be in their own little "Joystiq museum"...lol, anyway, If they cash it, they also lose that amazing looking check, and personally, I could do without the $200 (I mean, I would love to have the $200, but I think I'd rather have an amazing keepsake.)

I say you donate it to a charity that is dedicated to ending women's suffrage. Suffrage is wrong and needs to be dealt with!

The check is fake. The routing number is the dead give away. That check would be routed to the US Government if attempted to cash.
Also, the phrase "This check is as real as the consequences that follow." is also pretty blatant. The consequences are imaginary, much like the check.
Really. On both Kotaku and here, all I read are about what the editor should do with the check, when nobody realizes that the only thing the check is suitable for is framing.

This is more than likely legit.
the routing# is the second set of numbers and it is the routing# for Key Bank as printed on the check.
The numbers at the bottom are not always printed in the same order.

What I do not get is why people are so offended by this? I mean I get how all of you hate EA and everything. But, I personally love the marketing campaign so far.
Its real interesting. The cheque, the limb, the contest?
Who else does stuff like that?
But then again, thats just my opinion!

Give it to a worthwhile charity, like stopping child abuse or cancer.

Congratulations, by declaring and boasting about your charity you have succumbed to pride.
