Hands on: Alien Breed Evolution

Gallery: Alien Breed Evolution
Alien Breed Evolution is a twin stick shooter. Anyone familiar with the downloadable game scene knows the drill by now: Move with the left stick, aim with the right. Rather than offering players a constant stream of bullets, you'll have to pull the right trigger in order to shoot. That's a good thing, as all the weapons have limited ammo. Players find themselves faced with dozens of alien baddies and, naturally, are tasked with mowing them down. The demo offered a few different weapons to accomplish this, including an assault rifle, a pistol and, my personal favorite, a flamethrower. You can find grenades as well.
If all of this sounds a little familiar, it should. Furthermore, if Alien Breed Evolution has a hook to distinguish it from other similar action games, I didn't see it. There were a few things done differently, though. For example, players have to hold a button down for a few seconds to open a door or use a health pack. Obviously, this leaves you open to attack, so you have to choose your moments wisely. That said, the game felt very derivative. Open door, clear room of monsters, find key, open next door, repeat.
It's possible that PAX wasn't the ideal venue to demo the game. I wasn't able to try out the co-op mode, for instance, and whatever atmosphere the game has was lost in the noise of the event. Hopefully, playing the full game with friends is a more enjoyable experience, especially given the episodic plans for the game. Again, it's not that the game is bad but, given the constantly rising quality bar of downloadable titles, Alien Breed Evolution will have stiffer competition than it might have a year ago -- or even a few months ago.
Here's hoping that Team 17 can inject it with some of that Worms magic we all know and love.

My brother and I tried this out at PAX and it was a lot of fun. I wish it offered a 4-player option, but it seems like they're set at 2. I'll pick this one up if it comes out at 800 points.

Seems like an arcadey version of Space Siege. Could be fun, I always thought Space Siege was a little slow-paced, and coop sounds like it has potential.
StGermain @ Sep 10th 2009 6:27AM
It's based on a game called... Alien Breed, I loved it back in 1991, man i'm getting oooold...
WiredKnight @ Sep 10th 2009 4:18PM
Wow, really!? I never would have guessed that it was based on an older version of the game with the same name.
Sarcasm aside, the original was 2D, top-down. Space Siege is a very similar game, but 3D. I'm sure you can see the similarities.

I remember an old game Cyberdogs, it was one of those old school shareware games about a decade ago. It would serve as the perfect basis for one of these dual analogue shooters, basically you run around in a top down view killing bad guys, you'd collect money and in between stages you'd use the money to upgrade weapons, armour and buy ammo. Such a simple idea but it add's a lot to the classic top down shooter.
It makes players both co-operate to defeat enemies, and compete to earn more money than the other guy.

That is an awesome game! Played it back in 99 with my cousin in Toronto, visited him again last year and fired this game up for nostalgia.

I can swear there was a UT2004 mod that was similar to this (judging by the screenshots). Anybody remember the name ??
gcountach @ Sep 10th 2009 12:03AM
Alien Swarm. Awesome game too.

Eh... think you're missing the point. Alien Breed is an old game that Team 17 worked on years ago (circa 1991), for the Amiga. This Evolution is suppose to be an upgrade of it.
Very much like Alien Syndrome from Sega (which came out 5 years previous). Here's the bit of Wikipedia info on the game: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien_Breed
Games like this should always be judged with some knowledge of history. Inform the previous fanbase, and enlighten potential new ones!

Worms is my second favorite XBLA game. I really hope they do "inject" it with the amazingness that is worms.
Stinky @ Sep 9th 2009 10:41PM
This was a fun game on Amiga, but I can see the basic gameplay would seem dated if it was verbatim. Hopefully they've added some extra depth.
Levi @ Sep 9th 2009 10:49PM
Alien Syndrome disappointed me too, but I guess if I had played the original, I'd have a stronger appreciation for it. This looks a bit like Alien Syndrome too.
hunter @ Sep 9th 2009 10:58PM
an another failure of team 17 to try and make something else besides worms, first larry now this... anybody is really wondering why?
CH3BURASHKA @ Sep 9th 2009 11:34PM
Tried it at PAX, it was a decent dual-joystiq shooter.
Tony Bowman @ Sep 9th 2009 11:47PM
This reminds me so much of an old Sega Master System game that I can't remember the name of. :(
GordoJones @ Sep 10th 2009 1:41AM
I'm gonna be so disappointed if I can't breed with aliens in this game.
Big beN @ Sep 10th 2009 2:38AM
Who cares about Worms ?????
Here we talking about Aline Bredd, you have to be a Alien Bredd fan. And That game is so much in Aline Bredd tradition. MUST HAVE

"Alien Bredd"
"Alien Bredd"
"Alien Bredd"
How about "Alien Bread"?

Loved this back in the day on the trusty A500. It may be a case of rose-tinted glasses but from what I remember the level design and feel of the game was the biggest draw for me. It was based heavily on Alien/Aliens aswell.
I'm sure one of the cheats was 'OPENTHEPODBAYDOORSHAL" (Yes, you had to type the whole thing in whilst playing)
The_Fireball @ Sep 10th 2009 7:24AM
Original Alien Breed: Tower Assult was the nuts on the Amiga
I think you've totally missed the point Richard Mitchell. "Injecting" some worms "magic" would completely ruin Alien Breed - it's not a tounge in cheek game where all the bad guys would be somehow improved by giving them a gordie accent, or making them exclaim "I'll get you" everytime you kill one.
Your review suggests that Team 17 games must, by definition, all be like worms to be half decent. That's like saying all capcom games should include a man in a white karate suit that throws fireballs.
Richard Mitchell @ Sep 10th 2009 11:29AM
I never said it had to be like Worms. I said this game didn't have any sort of immediate hook to it (which Worms does). What I played was decent, but a little generic and not great.
Whether or not you love Alien Breed doesn't change that. The same way that loving Frogger doesn't make Frogger 2 (XBLA) anything but a pile of garbage.
Like I said, I hope I'm wrong. I want this game to be good. In a different setting, playing with friends, maybe it will be. I really hope it is.
hunter @ Sep 10th 2009 12:41PM
i think the same, the problem is not that this game has "worms feelings", the problem is that team 17 has not been able to make something that is as good as worms, just look how much time we have to wait for a new game from this guys that doesn´t have the name worms in it.
and let´s not forget that alien breed HAS NEVER BEEN an original idea or something new, alien breed appeared for the amiga in the times when amigas were starting to lose the battle against the p.c. and any game with more or less quality was seen as a masterpiece, alien breed is nothing but a gauntlet clone, nothing more nothing less, there was nothing new or amazing about alien breed, it was just a clone of a very popular game ( and also a little bit like alien syndrome)
the hook of worms is that is a 2 player game that is simple and fun to play, but this is like saying that tetris is the best game for a portable system (which is true) it´s the concept that was right not the company.
Team 17 has nothing new to give so far, their last try to do something new was garbage, and now this looks more like an attempt to capture nostalgic memories than a real try to do something good or new that is not based on an old glory days title. oh well, now that the are so busy bringing back old titles maybe we´ll finally see that famous super frog 2 game that was going to be awesome for the amiga 1200.
Demiath @ Sep 10th 2009 8:01AM
It may be that Alien Breed is too simplistic a game for our day and age, but I don't really understand what Richard Mitchell was expecting. It's Alien Breed for crying out loud; there's just not a whole lot you can do with that (very basic) formula without creating something which isn't anything like the original game. And what does Worms have to do with anything?
chip5541 @ Sep 10th 2009 9:45AM
I still have my Amiga versions. Loved the game.
james tolson @ Oct 19th 2009 9:55PM
This is the game im looking forward to the most this year, even tho it is only a download. . i have all the alien breeds, for the amiga including the (doom style) alien breed 3d's im a big fan of Team 17.. like Super Stardust HD they have brought back a Classic ( i personally sent them mails years ago begging them to bring back Alien Breed). i Think Richard Mitchell is a little narrow minded either that or he is too young to remember when games where great.. Team 17 have made awsome games in the Amiga heyday, maybe next they will remake project X... The Best thing i that Team 17 are still independant game studion not too far from where i live. they are not own by some oversize publishing company, order'd to pump out online rpg clones, crap fps's ore rts command and conquer clones. this is what makes this game good by what it symbolises, i hope it still has co op play and self desrtuct levels and not forgetting "INTEX" computer terminals where one buys upgrades etc :-)
